Society at large will place the broadest demands upon you, for our educational system must be tailored to meet the complex philosophy and needs of a people who profess the creed of democracy. This philosophy and these needs are difficult to defineg they are still more difficult to fulfill in a rapidly changing and explosive type of civilization that possesses the power to bring about its own destruction. Society naturally looks to Education to nurture the wisdom through which will be realized the dream of a free and honourable people. Our concept of democracy dictates that your pupils are born free and equal. Their freedom demands that you recognize the same human dignity in all. Their equality, however, does not mean equality of intellect, it does mean equality of oppor- tunity. God has created each with his own peculiar set of capacities. The role of the teacher is to provide the inspiration and opportunity to bring these capacities to fruition, so that every child will move a step closer to becoming all that God created him capable of being. Your success in meeting these responsibilities towards Society and your pupils will be commensurate with the degree to which you meet your responsibility towards yourself. Gradu- ation from the College signifies that you have added to your natural talent sufficient intellectual growth and craftsmanship to show promise as a teacher. You owe it to yourself to ful- fill this promiseg to do so you will have to continue to grow academically and professionally. In both these fields you should be satisfied with nothing short of excellence. Blessed then will be the pupils who come within your care. May 13, 1964. N K f ' M Wm. A. West Message -Dean of omen Stars have long been symbols of unattainable heights. Although our physical hands cannot touch the stars, we can reach them in other ways if we let stars stand for the proper ideals in life. It is agreat art to be able to improve the golden moment of opportunity and catch the good that is within our reach. A All the days come to us filled with opportunities. Think of the magnificent power which has been put into these lives of ours, - a mind to think, reason and imagine. We can roam amid the stars and wander into the very borders of infinity. One of our greatest , difficulties in the attainment of our goals is that we do not seize our opportunities as they pass. g Life is a mosaicg each smallest stone must be polished and set with greatest care or the piece will not at last be perfect. It is the units in life that are most important. Look after the smaller parts and the greater aggregates will be right. Make the minutes beautiful and the hours and days will be radiant. If we strive hard enough, it is not impossible to reach our stars even though the goals seem distant at the outset. XX Message -Vice Principal ln December 1959 the writer was privileged to hear an address delivered to the O. P. S. M. T. F. by Arnold Edinborough which con- tained the following anecdote. As the analogies to the teacher and to teaching seem particularly appropriate, it is reprinted at this time. An old man, jogging a lone highway, Came. at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm vast and deep and wide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim. But he turned, when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. Old man , said a fellow pilgrim near, You're wasting your time with building here. You never again will pass this way. Your journey will end with the closing day. You've crossed the chasm deep and wide. Why build you this bridge at eventide'? The builder lifted his old, gray head. Good friend, the way l've come, he said, There followed, after me today, A youth whose feet must pass this way. This stream, which has been as naught to me To the fair-haired youth may a pitfall be, He, too, must cross in the twilight dim. Good friend, l'm building the bridge for him. The philosophy of the old man is one which might well be emulated by each dedicated teacher. Do you not agree? 'Eau XXX ,g1,t' . X- 4 11 . . ' fl Q -3 :':',.7 'Rii- Vjf. S p,- .uni VALEDICTORY Four thousand two hundred thirty-seven. Next year, we the graduates of the Lakehead Teachers' College for the year 1964 will influence the lives of approximately four thousand two hundred thirty-seven individuals. In the vehicle of learning , we must advance from the role of the passenger to that of the driver taking the controls and leading others down the path of learning. Within a short period of time we must emerge from the chrysalis of student into the full bloom of adult teacher. The question I pose today is this: Are we ready to teach others and assume the responsibility of guide posts along the road of learning and success? I'm sure none of us would be so facetious as to admit that we are truly qualified teachers. No matter how many outstandings we received while in training, can we really say we are outstanding teachers? I hope and trust, rather, we have been and will continue to be outstanding learners. We have stood at the threshold of teaching and have had the door opened for us. The task now is to enter through the door and assume our position within this scholarly and honour- able profession. Since we are all capable of being qualified learners, I have the utmost confidence in our graduating class. We have received the most competent instruction accorded a student teacher by the Masters of the College. Without their guidance none of us would be assembled here today with this feeling of satisfaction and confidence that I hope we have. As a result of our training and with the help of God, we will encounter and triumph over most situationsg regardless of results we will leave a mark on our pupils which will enhance their character and make society proud of them. Within the next ten years this influence will be felt by pupils numbering the population of Fort William or that other city to the north. But before we can set forth on our crusade of teaching, we cast one longing glance back at our emporium of learning. As expert learners, we are now ready to bid farewell to those who will carry on our tradition. Unlike the public school, high school, and university valedictories which bid farewell to an era and close a book in one's library of knowledge, our farewell is really one that is a transition. We do not close a book on one era as we have really only completed the first chapters. Many will go on to complete degrees in arts and attend professional summer courses for teachers. Only the surface of our chosen profession has been scratched, and it remains for us to advance in order to make a lasting impression on the sphere of education. As each graduate looks about him today, he undoubtedly feels some sorrow. This will be the last time that the graduates will assemble as a unified body. Many will leave for places far distant from this central beacon of instruction. However, the influence of each of us remains behind as an embodied spirit within the College. We have given a part of ourselves to this building and in return have received the methods from the Masters, the friendships of our classmates, and the trust of our communities. We have left our mark on the history of the College and our legacy to the ensuing assemblages would be one of maintaining and surpassing the standards we received and then passed on. To the graduates, I express my humility at the profound honour you have placed upon me as your valedictorian. To those who will remain behind, I am sure that the graduates extend their wishes for your successes in the future. To the Masters, may we at least in the coming years mould ourselves into the successful and respected teachers which I know you want us to be. In closing, may I leave you with this one parting thought which is a quote from THE SCHOOL'S ADMINISTRATION ACT, SECTION 22, Subsection 1, Paragraph C, which states: It is the duty of a teacher to inculcate by precept and example respect for religion and the principles of Christian morality and the highest regard for truth, justice, loyality, love of country, humanity, benevolence, sobriety, industry, frugality, purity, temperance, and all other virtues. If you can be a person like this and develop personalities like this, then the answer to the question Where was the British North American Act signed? is not likely to be AT THE BOTTOM. 66 114,01 GERALD BELL, May 15, 1964. LAKEHEAD TEACHERS' COLLEGE. - luv! , v. Y..-.V -..-......,- - -V .-1 TO: GRADUATES OF LAKEHEAD TEACHERS' COLLEGE Graduates of Ontario Teachers' Colleges enter the teaching profession to provide a service of primary importance - preparing young Canadians for the kind of cultural and economic life they will face. To prepare young Canadians for their future will require wisdom and knowledge: the wisdom comes with experience, but the knowledge must be acquired. Opportunities for increasing knowledge are manifold: with effort they will yield their benefits. Northeastern Ontario faces the prospect of substantial economic growth. It has the natural resources, has or can attract the financial capital, but its growth will be drastic- ally impeded if it fails to develop and retain its capital of brainpower. To teachers, brainpower is a special concern: they can play a maior role in its genesis and its increase: they can, by translating their concern into action, directly contribute to the cultural and economic growth of our northern communities and of Ontario as a whole. But they can fulfill their role only if they themselves reach toward their maximum of individual development by: Advancing as far as possible academically, Participating in activities that lead to growth, Reading widely, Continuing to learn about the world around them. Such a program should yield a lifetime of rewards and satisfactions. These sentiments have been prompted by our interest in Northwestern Ontario and in the achievement of its potential greatness.
