A Message from the Chairman Engineering students and practising engineers, have urgently addressed themselves to solutions of man ' s problems -- current and future. These problems include the social and oecological ( animal and vegetable economy) aspects as well as responsibility for the physical environment. These problems can be solved by technology both new and applied. Engineering has always been on the brink of technological progress. There is no doubt that it will continue to be. This implies leadership which carries with it, risk and responsibil- ity. The risk of seemingly insurmountable obstacles which means the retracing of one ' s steps to start again and again. Leadership also carries with it the responsibility of seeing to it that all are served. It is apparent that engineering decisions on its design, R. D. have led to relatively few impasses. The results have been good and are reflected in the standard of living in the country. The entreprennurial courage which engineering is able to offer free enterprise may well establish the funding required to support future social programs. The vitality of engineering technology in the next 25 years, its ability to take risks and live with the results, and its continuous struggle with the complex problems of modern society may very well determine homo sapien ' s survival as a species. HENRY NORTH CHAIRMAN, SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY FELLOW LAKEHEAD ENGINEERS, I have been allowed one last privi- lege; to deliver this, my final message, to you. Granted this opportunity, it becomes difficult to perceive what to say to you without repeating what I have already renumerated at various times during this year. I will try to do this privilege justice. This past year Lakehead University has seen the final emergence of a strong, active and youthful organiza- tion on campus. Yes, guys, I am speaking of the Engineering Students ' Society. In the past year numerous people have gone out of their way to help this emerging force along. As a result of their hard work, this years activities were all made possible and we should, therefore, extend our gratitude to them before we consider anything else. Now I ' ll get to the more concrete details of the year 1 970 - ' 7 1 . A long way back in September we were granted office space by the A. M. S. This was to be the centre of organization for the numerous events that occurred during the year. Most, if not all of these events occurred with such finesse that speaks highly of the organizers. Most of you will remember ' The Corn Husk Party ' , the ' Shinerama Drive ' , the ' United Appeal Campaign, ' ' Engineering Week ' , the ' Winter Carnival ' , the ' Wind-Up Stag and Party ' and numerous other Faculty Lounge parties which each celebrated a victory of some sort. You will notice I did not mention the ' Purple Beast ' nor the ' Crane ' . These fall into a different category which is hard to label but everyone accepts its presence. Another great asset to the Society was the weekly ' DEEP PURPLE ' which kept all the activities of the E.S.S. linked together and kept people informed of them. There also exists other accomplishments; in general, too numerous to mention. Among them are included our new voice on the School of Engineering meetings, our strong representation on the A.M.S. Council, the cannon, etc. I could go on for pages describing the events of the past year but you all know and well remember the major happenings. I would like to thank everyone that in any way helped to make the year ' 70 - ' 71 a succESSful one. I will not mention names since everyone knows who these people were and by not mentioning names I cannot fail to mention someone ' s name who deserves the credit. In closing it is hard to convey my feelings but never- theless I will remember the Lakehead Engineers as the ' greatest bunch of guys ' around - real true friends. As a final word - ' Remember, when you are so far ahead of everyone else, it is hard to ever be second best ' . PAUL DOBROCKY President E.S.S. 1970-1971 Staff Editor Bill Dann Layout Harry Jaako-Editor Barb Johnston Advertising ..... Paul Dobrocky Tom Pape Harry Jaako Alexis Hresko Photography Ted Elewert Wayne Osipenko Hugh Winslow Markus Maenpaa The 1970 - ' 71 ' deep purple ' is the first yearbook produced by the Engineering Students ' Society of Lakehead University. It is meant to be a record of events sponsored by the E. S. S. and to give those who participated something to look back upon. In leafing through the book some of you will notice that some people have gotten their picture in more often than others. In fact, there are many people who have not gotten their picture in at all. Another thing is that there are some class photographs which have people missing and there are some that are unidentified. The simple explanation is that there are many engineers who don ' t wish to participate in Engineer ing functions or who aren ' t interested in helping out in any manner. I am not making excuses for the yearbook staff for they do not need to be blamed. They did the best job they could and their effort turned in a fine yearbook. If there are going to be further editions of ' deep purple ' more sup- port from the entire student body is going to be needed. I feel this year ' s effort was well worth the time and money spent. I hope the year book will be carried on in the future. Civil Tech. Ill BACK ROW, Left to Right: H. Jaako, B. Couture, A. Jarvis, I. Brown. SECOND ROW: A, Rubenick, J. Medendorp, B. Cenedese. Considering that Engineers add up to about 7% of the total student population atL. U. , this isn ' t too bad at all. Thanks goes out from Kaz Miyata to everyone that helped; it was a job well done. The past year has witnessed the drive and enthusiasm of the Engineering Students ' Society which set the pace for the University. I believe a communication media such as is vital in maintaining this momentum. With a good, solid man such as Ted at the helm, expect bigger and better things for ' 7 1 - ' 7 2 . The delegates were Paul Drobrocky, Lawerence Larsen, Rick Randall and Andy Saj. They returned to L. U. bringing with them all the ideas and recommendations that were put forward by all those participating, and they proceeded to put many of them to the test. Quite successfully too. Lakehead Engineers were well represented by these students and should be congratulated on their contribution to the Society. The conference at Queen ' s University witnessed five L.U. delegates lead the way in discussion. Favourable comment was received from those participating and observing of the contribution from the delegates. Congrats and thanks to Ozzie, Skip, Harry, Marcus and, of course, Doug Johnston. The 1971 Canadian Congress of Engineering Students Conference, held in Ottawa at the Universities of Ottawa and Carleiton, was attended by Bill Dann and Harry Jaako. The theme this year was Transportation and was extremely informative. The chance to meet and become friends with Engineering Students from other universities was, alone, worth the trip. Next year the conference will be held at the University of New Brunswick. This Page is Donated by: MR. J. ROBERTS ' HAIR ' BEAUTY SALON L.U.
