This is held annually on the campus of Florida State University during the last week in June. There they learn the fundamental principles upon which our government is based by putting these principles to active use for seven days. Officials for city and county government are elected and thus government is established on a local basis. Every person then begins to participate with his party affiliation. Soon polictical speeches begin and party campaigns are in full swing. Final candidates are elected from each party. Regulation voting machines are used in the last ballet as state officers are elected. Then the Senate and-the House of Representatives move into action. The climax at the end of a successful week when each person receives his certificate and pin. Two of the major scholarship winners for the year were Everett Falk and Homer Schaaf. Everett won the N.R.O.T.C. Scholarship on which he plans to attend Vanderbilt University in the Fall. Homer is one of the very few to win the National Merit Scholarship and also the General Motors Scholarship. He plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Tech- nology. Back row: Cecil Maddox, Bill Justice, Jim Cooper, Rae Brown, Edwin Powell, Roger Cain, Billy Atwell, Sonny Jones, James McMillan, Jerry Cooper and William Shirey-Manager. -? , , The Highlanders on defense. The T956 season of the Lake Wales High- landers was not too impressive. ln the eyes of the coaches and fans, the Highlanders couldn't get to- gether at any one time. Two games, outstanding tor their closeness in scores, were those with Dade City and Wachula. Even though the team was classed as the underdog in both games, they fought valiantly and kept the opposing teams from scoring excessively. The coaches should be compli- mented for keeping their boys going all season with pep and tire while suffering a bad year. 4- H61 W' N 'gg'-?'f'7fN'3f3g4L?'m m an ? X 3 , M1531 4 'o. Y, wflfl. That year we honored the other classes with a Halloween carnival with dancing and many types of ghoulish contraptions. The Juniors were given a picnic at Eagle Lake, and all of our duties as Freshmen were taken well in stride. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BUY A MAGAZINE? This was a question heard all over Lake Wales as we Sophomores set out to break all records set by previous classes for magazine sales. After selling 52,586.40 worth of magazines, we began thinking of having the whole class tour Washington. With a huge Christmas tree decorating the Woman's Club, we gave a Holiday's dance which turned out to be a great success. Again we ventured to Eagle Lake, but this time it was to give the Seniors their last picnic. With water football and fried chicken, this day became one of the best in the year. UPPER CLASSMEN AT LAST! One of the main duties of the Juniors is to sell refreshments at football games, and our class co-operated whole heartedly to further stretch the seams of our treasury. GHOST ROAD our three-act contribution to the stage was six weeks in preparation. As Old Bones set the theme, several of our classmates assumed roles that transported the audience into a world of horror, mystery, and comedy. The country club never looked more like the old South than when we gave our Junior-Senior Prom. The evening held a buffet, dance, and a breakfast. To many this was the first all night party. THE VERY LAST YEAR Homecoming, with all of its gayety and excitement, was made even greater as our class presented half-time festiv- ities at the game and ended the evening with a semi-formal dance. This year, THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED showed the talents of the class on the stage. This three-act comedy was presented with the new props which were our gifts to the school. Our dreams as Sophomores had at last materialized and we left for Washington. For five glorious days our time was spent riding trains, touring Richmond, taking a moonlight boat ride, touring Annapolis, and seeing all of the sights of Washington. At last .Iune sixth arrived and the Class of 1957 walked down the aisle at 8-OO P.M. The last four years seemed like just a short period. Many things that should have been done were never done, but as the speeches were made, we seemed to feel a pride in our Class of '57. Www 4,5 ' ' N f 'lf' !1':y'9 - . , N .' fs- . ..
