1874 - Lake View High School -- 1954 fqff-as .1-if '61 . lg f.e ffff I .1 If . . ,f?,..v-xg x :gk fi 53, , up 93? ' lforjy of Ofafe Mew we ' F70 '7 ffa I speak to you now in a voice mellowed and wise with age. You are not the first to whom I have spoken, for many have come to me during my eighty years. I can and will tell you of the days gone by, of my beginning, my joys, my tragedies, my losses, my gains, and, most of all, my growth. Now hear my voice from the past, I speak of my history - the history of Lake View High School. 1869 - WVilliam P. jones, scholar, educator, poet, and prophet carrie to the community of Lake View and here plot- ted my beginning. I was to be the first township high school in the state. 1873 - After many long hours of committee battles, the site of my first building was donated by the Graceland Cemetery Company. 1874 - April 29 brought my dedication. I was the prairie high school, Lake View. My hrst building consisted of a library, a laboratory, four classrooms, and a large assembly hall. May 4th saw the entrance of my first seventy-three stu- dents. Only eight were taking regular high school courses. 1876 - My students took part in scholastic tests given by the Educational Committee of the International Exposition. In February the records revealed that I had received the highest possible award, and that my tests ranked above all other school work submitted throughout the world. The only graduate of the year, Benjamin Franklin McConnell, walked alone through commencement to become the first alumnus. By 1884 sixty-seven young people became Lake View alumni. During this time the head of the school was Augustus F. Nightingale. I could not call him the principal, because, as many of these hrst students could tell you, he taught classes as well as administered the school. 1884 - By this time the enrollment began to enlarge. I was bursting with pride in this year, because some of my graduates returned to teach the classes of their Alma Mater. 1885 - Friday, the thirteenth of March, brought disaster. A fire completely destroyed my Hrst building. Science apparatus, some furniture, and Johnny , the school skeleton, were the only things the fire fighters were able to save. Of course the students expected to have a holiday, but Dr. Nightingale found a place for them to meet. School met as usual the following Monday in the Evanston Avenue, now Broadway, Chapel. Commencement exercises for the ten graduates of the year were held in the Evangelical Lutheran Church on School Street. 1886 M After floating a bond issue, the citizens of the com' munity proudly celebrated the opening of my new school build'ing on May 28th. 1889 - The town of Lake View was incorporated into the City of Chicago. Somehow, I felt as though I had now grown up. I was a city high school. 1890 - For the first time since my beginning a change of leaders took place. Dr. Nightingale and his wife said Good- bye to me, when the well-loved principal was selected to become the Superintendent of Chicago Schools. For a short time, Mr. Charles WV. French held the position of principal. A year later he left to take charge of Parker High School. Following him was james H. Norton, who, because of his youth, became the big brother to all the students. 1898 - A four story addition was erected at the north end of the building, for I was getting bigger. Both my enrollment and my faculty were growing. 1900 - Those whom the gods love die young . I lost a beloved hero, companion, and principal, James Norton. Mr. Benjamin F. Buck became the new principal. 1912 - Mr. Buck left us to become the principal at Senn High School. Mr. B. Frank Brown, who was beloved by faculty and students alike because of his magnetic personality, fol- lowed him. During the time from 1912 to 1924 he helped to inaugurate the Lake re View , the local honor society, the R.O.T.C., the Lake View Commission, and Senior Cotton Day. Enrollment grew until it reached the vast number of 3,500. 1916 - My old two-story building was razed, and a new section containing the present assembly hall was erected. At the same time a new north section containing the boys' gymnasium was built. 1917 - 1Var!! The country entered YVorld War I, and every student at Lake View did his part by buying bonds. Many of my boys joined the armed forces and some even died for their country. 1919 - Despite the war, I had grown with leaps and bounds. It was necessary to open three branches: Greeley, Ravenswood, and Hamilton. 1924 - Mr. B. Frank Brown passed from my halls forever. Mr. Charles Perrine took his place as principal. During the next six years both the Parent-Teachers' Association and the present course book system were established. 1929 - I found it necessary to relinquish my beautiful willow trees. The city was widening Ashland Avenue, and my trees were standing in the way of progress. 1930 - This year found a quiet, dignified man taking the helm. Mr. Olice 1Vinter, who loved all girls and boys, and had implicit faith in their ability to build a better world, became principal. The enrollment increased to 4,800. In order to hold this overflow, another branch, Audubon, was opened. 1939 - Another new section was added. This one was at the far north end of the property, and contained the Lunch- room and the girls' gymnasiums. 1941 - World VVar II! Again I gave freely of my boys and girls, and bought my quota of stamps and bonds. 1948 - I, with many others, mourned the passing of Mr. Hlinter, one of the greatest men to ever influence my young people. May 3rd brought to me my present principal, Mr. Trimble Boyd. A good leader, he has instituted the National Honor Society, a new form of student government, the May Festival, and the Wfater Ballet. 1954 W- I am now eighty years of age. Somehow, I feel no older now than I did on the first day I opened my doors to teenagers to ofler them an education. My graduates have become famous in all fields of work. I am more than pleased to say that many of my young people have returned to teach my classes. It gives me a warm feeling to know that people think enough of me to devote their lives to keeping my reputation perfect. From my halls have passed such famous people as: Edgar Bergen, IVilliam Thompson, jimmy Nelson, Kay Wlestfall, John Gunther, Robert Palmer, Fritz Liebler, Hope Skillman, Clark Kuebler, Gloria Swanson, janet Gaynor, and many others who have made their names famous. This brings my story to a close. I have spoken of the past: and I am looking forward to a bright future. My most fervent prayer to God is that I will be allowed to continue to put young people on the right road to success. lu
