jd, 3 Lgleer Our anime .fgfwctyd jninfing QW' lfll Awe In future years when you take this book from its shelf and live in retrospec- tion, your life at Lake View High School in '53, you will be reminded of The Spirit of '53 , the theme of this book. The spirit of '53 at Lake View was a spirit of cooperation, a spirit of pulling together by students, teachers, parents, and community to make the old Alma Mater a great school. It was this spirit of cooperation on the part of the staff of the Red and White , students and teachers alike, that gave us this beautiful annual that will become more precious as we get older. It was this same spirit of working together that gave us many splendid issues of the Lake re View that have won a cherished place among our souvenirs of this year. It gave us two wonderful musicals, a spectacular May Festival, and a fine talent show. It was this spirit of pulling together that gave us two very beautiful and in- spiring graduation exercises. We thought the graduating class of January 1953 had reached the ultimate in stage decorations and splendor, but the June class came through with plans for one that was even more beautiful. It was this spirit of cooperation by members of the P.T.A. and student coun- cil that secured the promise of Friday night socials at Lake View, which became a reality on the evening of April 17th. How well we remember that first social center in the boys' gym . Nor can we forget the Turnabout Dance that was sponsored by the Lake re View staff. It was the driving force of this great spirit of '53 that made us work hard in our classesg play hard in our social life, and fight to win our games and contests. It was this spirit of '53 that made us proud of our Alma Materg loyal to its great traditions, and conscious of its splendid reputation. May this great spirit of coop- eration make us better citizens of this great Republic and help us to gain a full, Assistant Principal happy life. Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by their coverings, cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Remove the covering and you will find be- neath it a living Splendour, woven by Love, by Wisdom with Power. Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the ange1's hand that brings it to you. Everything we call a trial, a sorrow, or a duty, believe me, that angel's hand is there, the Gift is there, and the wonder of an over-shadowing Presence. Our joys, too, be not content with them as joys. They, too, conceal diviner gifts. 'Life is so full of Meaning and Purposeg so full of Beauty - beneath its cover- ing - that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage then to claim itg that is alll But Courage you have, and the knowledge that we are pilgrims together, wending through unknown country, home.
