LakeStevens, WA 982 58f This year, for the first time, the annual is proudly dedicated to two individuals who have made positive differences in our lives. With their exam- ple, their intelligence, and their compassion, MR. THOMAS and MR. SIGLER represent all that we hope for in teachers, directors, coaches, advisors and friends. For their outstanding ef- forts on our behalf and for their tireless devotion to our school and our community, we thank them. This one's for you. In his classroom, MR. SIGLER teaches effectively, innovates constantly, and cares about students. Mr. Sigler was our chief senior class advisor, and his production of THE WIZARD OF OZ was visually exciting, full of fun, and highly successful. LEFT: Speaking to the student body at a pep assembly. RIGHT: With his daughter at homecoming coronation. Close to his assistants and players, coach Thomas devotes most of his energy to students' well being. At press time, the football team was 9 and 1 and on its way to Camas. Still, his emphasis was on kids, not wins. With a record of 11-2, Lake be- came the undisputed Wesco AA Champs. The big story on the Vikings this year has not been a few individ- uals but a combined team effort. Next year they hope for a better turnout. So girls, go out for swimming next year! The coach was Mr. Buttery, and the manager was Shawn Nelson. There to motivate the girls was their team captain Lori Spencer. The most improved person on the team was said to be Megan Sweeney. For example, near the beginning of the season, Scott Rauhala broke the school record with an eleven second pin. Then, mid-way through the season, Dave Sexton again broke the record, pinning his opponent from Monroe in nine seconds. During the season, the team participated in four tournaments. They exhibited excellence by placing third in the Cardinal Christmas Classic, third in the Viking Invita- tional, first in the WSWCA Hall of Fame Tournament, and first in the Ed Stevens Classic. The details of the background seemed to fade out of focus somewhere behind him, and sadness filled the air like a dark thunder cloud. His face was slightly drawn with anxiety. Shaky and hesi- tant, his first words expressed uncertainty about his decision to leave the school, but anticipation at the challenge of a new job. As he spoke, he carried the audience back in time to numerable pep assemblies, dances, and Homecoming celebrations. Images of bas- ketball games, |unior proms, and graduation parties were surprisingly clear to those who had never exper- ienced them before. His pride in Lake Stevens High School glowed brighter with every word. Finally, he thanked the audience for their encouragement and support. Tears began to fall from his eyes. He paused for a moment, unable to continue. In that second, the audience was on its feet and applause resounded from the gym walls. A bewildered, yet grateful look crossed his face Three standing ovations followed the first. It was our way of saying thank you to a man who was much more than a principal ... he was a friend. -SHELLEY KOTY 140 Spring activities 'Our Town' Comes Front Row; Tami Wolff, Lisa Goshorn. Though Coach Houser said that they were a bit too shy, he knew they led the team well with their ex- perience and determination. As each year goes by, the team shows great improvement in skill and in teamwork. Coach Houser expected this year's team to have one of the best winning records in school histo- ry. The team has five exchange students who were counted on to contribute their ability and leadership to bring the team to the top! ACE'S ON STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE Watching and waiting. (Leah Dotson) The 1986 tennis season started out with an introduction to what competition is all about. The score was a close, 3-4, against Bainbridge Island, but the tennis team is expected to do better as they progress into the season. Head coach Mr. Mike She- phard's expectations are that Noni Langlo and Ketia Berry will go to state and do well. But, the overall team goal is to win the league championship. Eye on the ball. A Young Team With Experience Repeating as Wesco Champions was just one of the goals of the Viking team. Their overall depth suggested before the beginning of the season that they might find a place at the state meet. The Coca-Cola and Kitsap invitational were two of the season's high- lights, while the road to Tacoma required consistent and com- mitted performances both during the dual meet season and at the district meet. Turnout and track meets are often wet, but rarely was this team cold. At left, a smooth handoff. Mike Powrozmk practiced with o traffic cone.
