Begley M E M 0 R 1 A L I looked at you you looked at me I saw confusion, love, anger, love You saw, something I wish now, after it's all been said and done and it's over that it could have been forever like we said I said, I think I love you You said, I think I love you we said, forever It was only two years I was there all the time I held your hand, I cried After awhile it was over It seems like a dream Part of my life is gone I'm glad it's not, I wish it was Time, time is everything Life, only two years Two years out of two lives Mine, not yet known Yours, sixteen years I love you, I'll never forget you How can I? I am yours You are mine Forever Looking back reminiscing I laugh, I cry Treat her gently, treat her kind. That's what the song says That's what you did It seems like a lifetime I feel ninety years old I see my friends and they are yours They say how are you I say pretty good Tell me, how good can I feel? Don't think I'm feeling sorry for myself I'm not because I am yours you are mine Forever But only two years And life goes on........... —Annette Schnase 68 MEMORIAL Micheal J. Begley Through the past years, we have always carried a special feeling in our hearts for our lost friend, Mike Pugsley. To all of us that knew him, he left with us memories we will always cherish. Mike was quiet, yet in his own way he was outgoing. He was involved in life. We love him, and he will never be forgotten. Denise Rubatino Class of 1980 Mike Pugsley MEMORIAL 69 It has been a tradition that the Senior Class votes for the teacher they wish to dedicate the annual to. This year, the annual staff unanimously voted to dedicate this annual to two faculty members who have passed away over the last year—Mr. Don Leonard (above) and Mr. Bob Watson (below). There are no words to express the emptiness; only a reminder to all who would seek to achieve: No guts, no glory. 70 FACULTY MEMORIAL ■ Mrs. Jann Johnston Mrs. Laura Madeo Mr. Harold Sigler Mr. Mark Spurgeon Mr. John Unckles Mrs. Anne Waite 72 FACULTY Planning for the English department began before the school year with the development of composition and research paper style sheets. The handouts were a part if an effort to add continuity to the English program. Mrs. Jann Johnston and Mr. Harold Sigler are new English teachers from the junior high. Inter-departmental activities were a part of the English and social studies programs. Students were given essay questions that English teachers corrected for grammar and social studies graded for content. Sliding walls allowed for group lectures in both departments including a two day lecture to CWP and history classes by Mr. Dave Tremaine regarding the U.N. and Egypt. Mr. Harry Ayers Mr. Joel Thaut Mr. Ed Browitt Mr. Kevin Thomas Mr. Gil McKinnie Mr. David Tremaine FACULTY 73 For the first time, the foreign language department planned an international publication. The German and Spanish classes joined efforts in producing the paper, which included stories, features, poems, games and puzzles in the two languages. The German class also participated in a state-wide German convention held at Mt. Vernon in March. Mrs. Dana Harris, a Spanish teacher was new to the foreign language department this year. The business department enjoyed new and better equipment, which allowed for greater training opportunities. Mr. Roy Dotson, a typing teacher, was new to the business department staff this year. Mrs. Yvonne Brailsford Mr. Roy Dotson Miss Ila Swofford Miss Timina Eggert Mrs. Dana Harris 74 FACULTY Everett Community College's co-operation with the Home Ec Department resulted in a new project- a pre-school program. The project offers opportunities for students in Home Ec. to observe young children. With the help of the new facilities and co-operation of the students, DECA profits have increased. Mr. Berg speaks highly of the school store, the Cove, as well as his students who operate it. A greater variety of crafts was offered this year by the art department; pottery, copper, and leather are some of the new art forms offered by Mrs. Sheraton. Mr. Bushaw continued to teach flat art. Mrs. Edna Morgan Mr. Steve Berg Mrs. Betty Sheraton Mr. John Bushaw FACULTY 75 It was a busy year for the music department as the bands and choirs performed at concerts and assemblies throughout the year. Mr. Len Denham is the new band director at LSHS this year, and Mr. Paul Harvey served once again as director of the choirs. Prior to the completion of the new gymnasium, P.E. classes were transported to the old high school gym. It was a great relief to finally utilize the new facility in late November, and for the 400 some Freshmen and Sophomore P.E. students, the new swimming pool was an added delight. Mr. Len Denham Miss Sherrie Martin Mr Paul Harvey Mr. Gary Mose 76 FACULTY A few changes have been made this year in the math program. The Consumer Math class is basically the same, but with a little different approach than last year. This year an Advanced Math class was offered to be aimed more directly at Pre-Calculus, instead of a separate Trigonometry and Math Analysis approach. Requirements for Science remained the same this year. There were the same classes offered, except for a small group in Marine Biology Study, taught by Mr. Fish. FACULTY 77 Mr. Bob Bear Mr. Cliff Chaffee Mr. Ken Haakenstad Mr. Don Lahti Mr. Steve Anderson Mr. Dennis Fish History and English classes especially made frequent use of the new library, which included a new librarian, Mrs. Vivian Doe. A greater number of books and reference materials were available to students. The vocational industrial arts department underwent many changes and improvements during '79-'80. New equipment allowed for a greater chance to develop skills. Mr. Kevin Grayum and Mr. Rand Pigott were new instructors, and new courses offered include a two hour welding class and an advanced horticulture class. As part of a guidance team which includes the Vice-Principal, school nurse and school psychologist, the counselors have sought to develop the most effective programs for the individual students that they can. The counselors are responsible for the following general areas: scheduling, vocational education (Skills Center), and college applications (scholarships, financial aid, etc.). These are not the limits of counseling duties. Perhaps their biggest service is just being there to talk to students at all times. A new alphabetized filing system for ninth and tenth graders' records was a major step in the new counseling offices this year. The girls and boys have really worked together throughout the year to keep the spirit going. Banners representing each school in the league were made and displayed in the new gymnasium. The committees also participated in work-swim parties every few weeks to keep the activities running smoothly. Tee-shirts, baseball hats, seat cushions, and doughnuts were sold during the year to help raise money for the club. (Lake Stevens Student Association) got off to a quick start, focusing on pride and involvement. Student body president, Jim Low, commented on the focuses of student leaders for '79-‘80. Our major concern initially was that students take pride in the new facility. We hope to develop a pride in Lake Stevens High School through positive attitudes and activities, reinforcing old traditions and establishing new ones. Some of the L.S.S.A. sponsored activities were: - reconstruction of the student governmental body including House of Representatives and Senate - revision of the student body constitution - Homecoming '79 - two major dances - Last Wispwe Kenseritek (Lake Stevens Winter Spirit Week Feb. 4-8) - C.P.R classes in conjunction with the Lake Stevens Fire Department - the Lake Stevens High School Mad Dash Treasure Hunt - an all-school square dance - a Parliamentary Procedure Workshop 80 President- Denise Rubatino Vice-President- Brett Boltom Secretary-Treasurer- Teri Hopkins 81 President- Kevin Thomas Vice-President- Todd Howard Secretary-Treasurer- Monica Tastad 82 President- Judy Estes Vice-President- Vikki Bruenn Secretary- Heidi Pound Treasurer- Kandis Hansen 83 President- Shaun Wolfe Vice-President- Beth McMahn Secretary- Mike Hougardy Treasurer- Jenny Frye Tom Ahl, Jay Anderson, Pam Athey, Tony Barnett, Kim Bauman, Ken Brainerd, Derek Bolton, Scott Buckner, Brenda Burns, Bobbi Jo Canell. Concert choir, because of its size, does not travel often. However they performed several concerts at home We have a new addition to the vocal program, Touch of Class, an all-girl swing choir. They and concert choir performed at Seattle Center for the Christmas shoppers Jubilation and Touch of Class, during spring vacation, performed on an exciting trip to Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farms. Both Choirs attended other tours to Vancouver B.C. and the Greenriver Jazz Festival. 90 CHOIR Danette Adams, Tanya Anderson, Bonnie Beck, Brett Bolton, Ken Brainerd, Lisa Brown, Scott Buckner, Kim Chapman, Lisa Coleman, Carla Day, Vicky Douglas, Dan Duwe, Nancy Glover, Jana Kanub, Becky Landert, Curt Lougheed, Jeff Loth, Larry Loth, Shelly McIntosh, Jeff Miles, Suzette Otter, Annette Schnase, Sandy Shabnow, Ted Thompson, Dave Wallin, John Warrick, Shawn Wolfe, Cara Wood, Andy O'Neal. Probably the biggest addition to our band is the new band instructor, Mr. Leonard Denham. There are two bands, Concert and Stage Band, in which students are working for both quality and quantity. They are making plans for a spring tour possibly in Eastern Washington and Idaho. With the amount of students we have in the bands, their goals should be easily attained. 92 BAND Stage Band members: Randy Brennick, Kevin Fosket, Thomas Gort, Candi Gould, Theresa Greig, Gordon Hilmo, Pete Hougardy, Roger Masterton, Dean McCoy, Jeff Miles, Edward Moore, Margret Peterson, Douglas Petrich, Jeff Schroedl, Joel Sexton, Scott Silcox, Linda Sparman, Carl Stephens, Mark Strecker, Michael Wagar, Tom Withrow, Debbie Zaretske. Deadlines, Deadlines, Deadlines!!! It seems the Annual Staff couldn't get away from those deadlines. This year we developed film and printed our own pictures, which was very time consuming, but very educational. The whole staff and Mrs. Waite have enjoyed using the new darkroom. Though we feel discouraged when we put in long hours, we feel our end product makes the whole thing worth it. 94 ANNUAL Journalism Staff, taught by Mrs. Laura Madeo, made many new improvements on the school paper. A new format was used-professional printing on an off-set press. The staff sold ads to help finance the 16 issues they put out. Editors were changed at each quarter. As Cheryl Mills stated, Journalism is a mad rush the last few days before the finished product is out, but what would life be without a little frustration? JOURNALISM STAFF: Darcy Geiger, John Harris, Val Jilg, Lisa Johnson, Patty Johnson, Jana Knaub, Brian Loth, Curt Lougheed, Tracy Main, Kerry Mauer, Cheryl Mills, Lori Pollestad, Denise Rubatino, Eric Schueler, Brian Stensrude, Jill Thompson, and Mike Wager 96 JOURNALISM Hl-Q TEAM: Pete Klevberg, Tami Taft, Anna Anderson, Louise Sebring, Toni Taft, Will Johnson, and Advisor, Mr. Stan Tutlis. If you received a Candygram, it was M M Club who sponsored that activity, and if you bought something at the Christmas Bazaar, it could have been made by an M M member. Their biggest activity, the tolo Heart to Heart became a joint sponsorship with the Torch Club. This lengthy list proves that M M Club is truly a fine service organization. 98 M M CLUB Letter Club members: Tom Ahl, Jennifer Ames, Donna Anderson, Greg Anderson (Vice-President), Lonnie Austin, Brent Barber, Jodi Best, Brad Bruenn, Scott Buckner, Matt Butler, Chad Crowley, Karen Davis, Shane Dressel, Todd Duskin, Daryl Duwe, Charlene Fosse. F.B.L.A. officers and other members have been involved in various activities throughout the year Attending conferences, scheduling night meetings, selling doughnuts, compiling the student directory, and doing their part in school events were among these activities. They were represented at a Northwest Regional Leadership Conference in Phoenix, Arizona by their president. Sue Pullen. Their increase in membership is not all that gets this group involved, but the participation and organization of its members provide one step closer to being Future Business Leaders of America. FBLA 103 Much enthusiasm and participation of students and teachers alike lead to an exciting homecoming. Included in, and resulting from this enthusiasm were participants dressed as slobs on Monday-Grub Day. Their best attire was shown on Tuesday-Coronation, in which Queen Lisa Brown was crowned. Jubilation performed various numbers during Coronation. Homecoming theme, Stairway to Heaven, was sung by Dan Duwe. Despite the fact checks and stripes don't match, students insisted on dressing so for Wednesday-Clash Day. Roaming about the halls on Thursday, were characters from a variety of fairy tales, for Fairy Tale Day. Our true colors were shown on Friday, Purple and Gold Day, for the game that night. The spirit of both wrestling and football cheerleaders, pep-club, and teachers shined during their skits on Friday's assembly. Although not as victorious as anticipated earlier, the Vikings performed well, sharing the excitement and enthusiasm of all. In an impressive start, Lake won 3 of its first 4 contests, including a 20-13 victory over Rainier Beach, on the astroturf at Seattle Memorial Stadium. A 21-16 upset win over Mt. Vernon saw the Viks defeat the Bulldogs, for the first time in 10 years. But competition proved tough the rest of the year, as the Viks lost 4 of their last 5 games. A 23-18 loss at Anacortes proved most frustrating after Lake pounded out 357 yards on the ground. The season ended on a winning note, as L.S. fans saw their team win at home, in the new stadium. The result: Lake 14, Stanwood 0. Coach Kevin Thomas summed up his team's efforts saying, 'Turning the corner for the Viks' would have been a 5-4 season and a playoff birth. We came so close. The Viking Pride is here, and all our fans can look forward to a winning season in 1980. SCHEDULE LAKE 6 STANWOOD 0 LAKE 20 RAINIER BEACH 13 $ LAKE 0 MONROE 34 LAKE 21 MT. It was a building season for the volleyball team this year- a year that saw the Vikings overcome a disappointing record with competitive performances and a strong finish. After achieving victories in just three league matches, the girls upset Stanwood in the second round of districts before bowing out to Monroe in the third round. The performance against Monroe exemplified a consistent effort and attitude that showed throughout the '79 season. Coach Sherrie Martin has high hopes for next year. It's always possible, but in the '80 season we can expect to be in the districts and hopefully state ' 112 VOLLEYBALL VIKINGS DIG VOLLEYBALL JV TEAM ROSTER: Chris Bonamy, Lisa Brown, Lorraine Brown, Pam Dettrich, Judy Estes, Diane Gort, Kelly Jones, Lenore Lewis, Christy Nelson, Lisa Pederson. With the top three team finishers still to be announced, the crowd quieted. In third place, with 84 points, Bellingham. Viking runners and coaches reacted immediately - elated at the team's first state birth ever. The second place finish behind Mt. Vernon at Skagit Valley CC qualified Lake for participation in the state meet at Evergreen High in Burien. Facing tougher competition, the Vikings ran to a 14th place team finish among AA schools on Nov. 10. The girls' team, edged out of state competition in '78, fell short again in '79, finished third in district behind Anacortes and Ferndale. Though disappointed, the girls look ahead to next season with confidence - and why not - all of this year's runners will be returning for the '80 campaign. Coaches Cliff Chaffee and Don Lahti led the teams this year. GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY: Karen Davis, Jennifer Ames, Lola Johnston, Donna Anderson, Charlene Fosse, Cheryl Kessler (top), April Sell. The season, on paper, doesn't show how hard each individual player worked at improving her game. The conditions were unfavorable; there were only two courts for twenty-two girls, who wanted to practice all the time. Even under these adverse conditions, great improvement was made. There were two outstanding players, Cindy Felix and Beth McMahan. Also, two returning letter persons Mary Stringer and Laura Jacobson, not only played well, but they helped in coaching the beginners. LASTWISPWE-KENSERITEK focused on generating school spirit at a dull time of the year. The student body activities included: an arm wrestling tournament, tricycle races, hat and glass day, T-Shirt day, spiff day, a poster competition, and a special assembly with class and faculty skits. The Vikings endured the '79- BO campaign with one win, which came late in the season at Ferndale. But hopes of a greatly improved record for next year exist as younger players carry a lot of experience into '80-81. The Junior Varsity team finished .500, adding to a bright outlook for next year. 122 BASKETBALL u SEASON RECORD LAKE 55 Enumclaw 63 LAKE 51 Redmond 62 LAKE 45 Lake Washington 52 LAKE 43 Stanwood 65 LAKE 55 Sedro Woolley 60 LAKE 48 Fife 55 LAKE 50 Meridian 67 LAKE 44 Monroe 48 LAKE 67 Sehome 76 LAKE 53 Mt. This year's outfield is very commendable, I think the finest in the league ' quoted Coach Ed Browitt. Even though there was a low victory record, a good effort was put forth by the team. SOFTBALL Excitement ran high among the girls when it was announced that Lake Stevens would have their first girls' softball team. Softball fever broke out early in the spring and infected the girls as they looked forward to spring practice. New equipment and uniforms were waiting. Practice and games were held at the old high school as the new field at the new school was not ready. Mid-season brought dreams of district play-offs to the girls and coaches, Mrs. McKinnie and Mrs. Waite. Their win-loss record at that point indicated that girls' softball at Lake Stevens was definitely here to stay. GIRLS SOFTBALL 151 .i— In reviewing the 1980 Viking track season, one has to look at it in a positive way. Under the technically sound coaching of Dan Dittmer the team proved highly competitive in NWAA and state meets. Both boys and girls from Freshmen to Seniors represented LSHS in all aspects of Track Field competition. Every athlete set goals and strived to achieve their goals in a dedicated effort. A year for breaking old records and setting new standards for the future, the 1980 season was a sure winner at Lake. A fuzzy face was added to the tennis team this year. He is the new tennis coach and his name is Mr. Rand Pigott. He had several goals for the team. Number one was to build the team for the future, while making this year's team a much better one than last year. He was a success. Mr. Pigott took a team that couldn't win a match against J.V. players last year, to a team that now takes on varsity players and competes. Already, several players have won matches, but the team has yet to win a match. With Mr. Pigott as tennis coach, you can look toward the boys' tennis team in a few years and know that they'll be a winner. 156 TENNIS TENNIS 157 SOCCER TEAM: Back Row - Brent Paylor, Andy Marks, Brian McGee, Rod Torkkola, Tim Schmidt, Jeff Henderson, Gary Klett, Brian Thornes, Jack Kammer, Coach Evans. The Fantastiks was a combined effort between the Drama and Music Departments at Lake-the first musical production at the new high school. The two fathers (Jeff Miles and Dan Duwe) purposely tried to keep the girl (Danette Adams) and the boy (Bob Wade) apart, thereby forcing them together. Other characters involved were the actor (Paul Mantikoski), the man who dies (Gregg Anderson), the mute (Martha Mantikoski), and the narrator (Brett Bolton). The staff included John Unckles, Len Denham, and Paul Harvey. Orchestra included Zela and Jana Knaub, Kathy Parks, Dan VerHeuI, and Pete Hougardy. It was truly a delightful performance.
