All we can do now is move ahead. Most of us had our doubts during our sophomore year as to wheth- er we would reach the ultimate of success at the Pink Palace: Seniors. Rob Coleman, Terry Robinson, and Mary Hawkins tried their hardest to keep us from falling apart. When our first homecoming rolled around, we were completely bewildered and started out by wearing gunny sacks with purple and gold racing stripes. We then put all our talents, skill, and intelligence into our skit, song, and yell. On rally night we pre- sented our masterpieces and received a first in skit, second in song, and third in yell. By the end of the year we were almost reluctant to leave. At the start of our junior year we were also a little reluctant to come back, but we forced ourselves. Homecoming sneaked up again but we managed to weather the storm. Again we won first place in skit, second in yell, and first in song. Under the lead- ership of Rob Coleman, Greg Williams, and Mary Hawkins, our class com- pleted all the junior activities, with some de- gree of success. Our prom, with Jean Modrow as chairman, was attended by all. At the end of the year we were excited about leaving, but even more ex- cited about coming back as seniors. 14 1967-1968 Senior Class Officers Now, at last we are the senior class. Already home- coming week has come and gone, with our class taking honors for the third and final time in the skit. We also took first in the yell. Our senior play, Tom Jones was a tremendous success, and without our senior boys on the football team the season would have been much tougher. For our last year we chose Ron Rudge, Greg Williams, and Mary Hawkins as our class officers. The end of the year will soon be here and many of our efforts will be forgotten, but our class will always be remem- bered. The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, moves on, nor all thy Piety nor Wit shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it. ” 15 JEFF BACKSTROM SHIRLEY BERTELSON JOHN BERTSCH RAY BOND 16 SHARON BOYD RODGER BROERS RONDA BROTTEN STEPHEN CARR LINDA CAUDLE DEBBIE DALTON 17 KATHY DAVIDSON 18 KEN EKLUND RUSS FENNER GAYLE GILBERTSON SANDY GILDROY BONNIE GRAINGER BOB GRANGER TIM GRIFFIN 19 MIKE GROSS MARY HAWKINS GRADY HELSETH ALAN HILLMAN GARY HART BOB HAYPORD TOMMY DORSEY? Despite the loss to Mt. Baker, which snapped a 19 game winning streak, the Viks posted a 6-3-1 record. Individual awards were given to Mark Zehnder, team captain; Mike Gross, most inspirational; and Robert Coleman, most improved player. L.S. 14-7 Arlington L.S. 13-26 Mt. Baker L. Mrs. H. L. Hunt re- ceived a plaque commemorating the dedication of the new field for the late Mr. H. L. Hunt. Mr. A1 Anderson also received recognition for his very valuable work in lead- ing the Citizens Committee respon- sible for lighting the field with some of the best lights in the state. 48 Mr. Jim Mitchell The Viking Drill Team and Band welcome the players on the new field. 49 Basketball 1967 50 Lynden 54-41 L.S. As the league standings will testify, it was a building year for the Viking basketball squad. Coach Mose started with only one returning letterman and a group of eager boys ready to play basketball. By the end of the season, however, the team had acquired the close unity and playing experience that will be helpful to them next year. Tip' it to the Lake SI Wrestling Although this year's wrestling team was relatively small they represented Lake Stevens with great strength. Through- out the season Lake tried their hardest to gain victory over other schools but did not always succeed. However, four members of the team did quite well in all their matches and went on to the regional meet. 53 Baseball-’67 Assistant coach Mr. Estes, K. Ames, D. Wilson, C. Lundquist, R. Newman, B. After the dust settled and the last homerun was hit the Vikings were on top to receive the laurels in the Cascade League baseball race. The suc- cessful season was coached by the Mayor Gayle Whitsell, who was assisted by Robert Estes. 54 Track With the monsoon season behind and the days growing longer, the Vikings looked forward to more great track competition. By the end of the season the team had collected an impressive list of new records and individual achievements, making it a fitting climax to last year's athletic activities. They sound foreign, but every- one on the staff learns them quickly and well. The 1968 Pilchuck owes it's publication to Edi- tor, Toni Watson and her ability; to Dee Dee Urbick and her hours spent on copy and as co- editor; to Chris Hagen for her contributions as the assistant editor; and to Bill Mitchell for his superb work in photography. We especially thank the Sebrings for their sports pictures. In addition, many sophomores, juniors, and sen- iors contributed to the publication. This book is the result of many people. We hope you will appreciate the 1968 Pilchuck. 62 Norski This years staff, although quite small, did a great job in getting the paper organized and produced. Staff members have covered everything from skiing to confucius says, including sports, gossip, and local news. A hearty thanks to all who have helped in this worth-while newspaper. The next task was tutoring for elemen- tary children in the Lake Stevens area. This proved rewarding to both the mem- bers and their students. A trip to West- ern Washington State College was taken to look over the campus and classes. FTA is an active service club, and these were but a few of their interesting activities. They held a joint initiation chili feed with Arlington. They've been one of many to earn money for the scholarship that local FHA chapters give to an interested home economics student. They also have helped to make the senior hall more colorful by taking care of the bulletin board. FHA is proud to say that one of its members, Linda Kallicot, is the Washington FHA Secretary, who was head of the state meet in Olympia and got to go to Los Angeles this summer. 66 F. F. A. Judging Team 67 Commercial Club Commercial Club is a specialized club. In order to be one of its many members you must be taking or already have taken a year of some sort of secretarial course. Its members are kept busy doing many things. They have to earn points toward a pin. In order to do this they have sold refreshments at games, and held a raffel. They also gave a scholarship to a student who is interested in the field of secretarial work. All together they have done quite a bit for the school. Band Officers 72 Drill Team The Drill team, led by Ellen Smith, put on many entertaining shows. They marched during half time, at both football and basketball games. The main difference, which we on the staff realize as very valid, is the lack of professional know-how. A yearbook editor hopes to be compensated with talent and willingness to work. Gratefully, I acknowledge these attributes, which I found in such staff members as Billie Hollis, Candy McOuarrie, Kathy Lakey, Chris Pearson, Jeni Ostrom, Donna Illman, Mary Hawkins, Bill Mitchell, Larry French, and Tim Griffin. Special thanks to Gary Larson for the photo-essay, Chris Hagen as copy editor, and most of all to Dee Dee as my co-editor. Good luck to Chris in '69 as editor of the next Pilchuck ! Toni 86 In Appreciation To Mr. William Marchand, who donated hours of time and energy to make our annual a photographic success, we extend our thanks. 87 “There are some things which cannot be learned quickly, and time, which isall we have, must be paid heavily for their acquir- ing.” 91 We entered a cataclysm as sophomores. It was like swimming in icy water, but re- freshing. After awhile the water became warmer, and our time was spent in thinking of the future. Now, finally, our places are being drained in preparation for new swim- mers. We enter deeper waters 93 There can be no turning back — our lives are committed to a journey that never returns to port. Do we have the wisdom now to plot a pro- per course? As we proceed we will learn... t-r 94 Let us proceed! ., - - • ' - - - —. ft -- i : -- --- - £3 ' : j, . . rizt ' - ——' .
