HISTORY OF LAKE SHORE SCHOOL The school year of 1942 began as usual. Jacksonville schools were crowded because of the war. The children of service people increased the enrollment of the already crowded schools. Something had to be done-and it was. In the Lake Shore area, a new school opened its doors to its first pupils on October 9, 1942. The first year was hectic because the school was not equipped. There were no shades, lights, books or desks. Instead of desks the rooms were provided with folding chairs. The school borrowed a few text books from John Gorrie Junior High School. In a few months desks were delivered but electricity was not supplied until later. On the first day four hundred sixty three pupils enrolled in grades one through nine. The school was built to accommodate five hundred fifty. The faculty was headed by Mr. A. W. Lancaster, Principal, and included Mrs. Rose Lapeyre, Dean, Miss Fehr, Clerk, Mrs. Margaret McNeill, formerly Miss Margaret Darsey, First Grade, Miss Martin, First and Second Grades, Mrs. Rivers, Second Grade, Miss Stanford, Third Grade, Mrs. Wood, Fourth Grade, Mrs. Hammond, Fifth Grade, Mrs. Witt, Sixth Grade. The Junior High teachers were Mrs. Gwynne Perry, Latin and English, Mrs. Bentley, General Science, Miss Lipscomb, English, Mrs. Haynes, Mathematics, Miss O'Kelley, Homemaking, Mrs. York, English, Mrs. Perry, Mathematics, Miss DeLegal, History and Civics, Mrs. Jones, History, Mrs. Walter, English, Mrs. Beckley, Art, Mrs. Boutwell, Girls' Physical Education and Mrs. Messer, Boys' Physical Education Mr. Lancaster and Mrs. Lapeyre left after four years and were succeeded by Mr. E. L. Lounsbury, Principal, and Miss Elizabeth Larsen, Dean. The first Lookout, Published in 1943, was sponsored by Mrs. Gwynne Perry. The first annual pub- lished in 1947 was under the sponsorship of Miss Virginia Wainwright. In 1948 Mr. John T. Rowell succeeded Mr. Lounsbury as Principal. Since its opening in 1942 Lake Shore School has grown constantly. The enroll- ment has increased each year. From the enrollment of four hundred sixty three in 1942, it reached over fourteen hundred, last year, the highest enrollment yet recorded. The enrollment this year is about twelve hundred. ln 1947 the first two portables were added. ln 1948, two more were built and in 1949 four were moved from the Baldwin School. This brought the total up to eight portables which were used entirely by the elementary grades until this year when the elementary enrollment was relieved by the opening of nearby Hyde Park School. Throughout the past ten years Lake Shore has had a marvelous growth which has strained its limited facilities to the near breaking point. In 1949 it was necessary for the library to be made into two unsatisfactory classrooms. This year we are acquiring a cafeteria and bleachers and showers in the gym for which we are all very thankful. These will be used and enioyed by classes of the future. We are leaving Lake Shore with the hope that in the near future it will have an addition which it so sorely needs. SUSAN DALHOUSE
