Jacksonville schools were crowded because of the war. The children of service people increased the enrollment of the already crowded schools. Something had to be done-and it was. In the Lake Shore area, a new school opened its doors to its first pupils on October 9, 1942. The first year was hectic because the school was not equipped. There were no shades, lights, books or desks. Instead of desks the rooms were provided with folding chairs. The school borrowed a few text books from John Gorrie Junior High School. In a few months desks were delivered but electricity was not supplied until later. On the first day four hundred sixty three pupils enrolled in grades one through nine. The school was built to accommodate five hundred fifty. The faculty was headed by Mr. A. W. Lancaster, Principal, and included Mrs. Rose Lapeyre, Dean, Miss Fehr, Clerk, Mrs. Margaret McNeill, formerly Miss Margaret Darsey, First Grade, Miss Martin, First and Second Grades, Mrs. Rivers, Second Grade, Miss Stanford, Third Grade, Mrs. Wood, Fourth Grade, Mrs. Hammond, Fifth Grade, Mrs. Witt, Sixth Grade. The Junior High teachers were Mrs. Gwynne Perry, Latin and English, Mrs. Bentley, General Science, Miss Lipscomb, English, Mrs. Haynes, Mathematics, Miss O'Kelley, Homemaking, Mrs. York, English, Mrs. Perry, Mathematics, Miss DeLegal, History and Civics, Mrs. Jones, History, Mrs. Walter, English, Mrs. Beckley, Art, Mrs. Boutwell, Girls' Physical Education and Mrs. Messer, Boys' Physical Education Mr. Lancaster and Mrs. Lapeyre left after four years and were succeeded by Mr. E. L. Lounsbury, Principal, and Miss Elizabeth Larsen, Dean. The first Lookout, Published in 1943, was sponsored by Mrs. Gwynne Perry. The first annual pub- lished in 1947 was under the sponsorship of Miss Virginia Wainwright. In 1948 Mr. John T. Rowell succeeded Mr. Lounsbury as Principal. Since its opening in 1942 Lake Shore School has grown constantly. The enroll- ment has increased each year. From the enrollment of four hundred sixty three in 1942, it reached over fourteen hundred, last year, the highest enrollment yet recorded. The enrollment this year is about twelve hundred. ln 1947 the first two portables were added. ln 1948, two more were built and in 1949 four were moved from the Baldwin School. This brought the total up to eight portables which were used entirely by the elementary grades until this year when the elementary enrollment was relieved by the opening of nearby Hyde Park School. Throughout the past ten years Lake Shore has had a marvelous growth which has strained its limited facilities to the near breaking point. In 1949 it was necessary for the library to be made into two unsatisfactory classrooms. This year we are acquiring a cafeteria and bleachers and showers in the gym for which we are all very thankful. These will be used and enioyed by classes of the future. We are leaving Lake Shore with the hope that in the near future it will have an addition which it so sorely needs. SUSAN DALHOUSE lllDllE5iIDlIl4EQ1MlIlflll4ID1lNll MRS. EMMIE PERRY Through her genial manner, refreshing sense of humor, and warm friendliness, Mrs. Perry has endeared herself To The graduating class. LAURELS FOR JUNE Not to the accompaniment of shouting crowds and enthusiastic cheerleaders, but in her own quiet way, June Turknett, an English student of Mrs. Mayo's, won just as sure a victory for Lake Shore as any one on the football field or basketball court. In the 1951 Fall contest held by the National High School Poetry Association, June was awarded a certificate of acceptance, stating that her poem God's Day, had been one selected for publication in the ANNUAL ANTHOLOGY OF HIGH SCHOOL POETRY for this year. We are indeed proud of June's accomplishment and the honor her success brings to Lake Shore School. We heartily congratulate her and take pride in printing God's Day in our 1952 Hi-Lights. GOD'S DAY Sometimes I watch on a rainy day, The crying heavens which seem to say, The tiny world looks a bit dirty to me: I think I'd better wash the green grass and that willow tree. Then when the heaven had finished its cry, All the black clouds cleared from the sky. Now it's a bright day early in spring, And all the birds merrily seem to sing. The sun will soon set deep in the west, The birds will be snuggled deep in their nest. In God's holy name we will secretly pray, Thank Thee dear Lord, for so perfect a day. 55 Q QQSX' NXO Kg?-YXQNQ, N0 4 SXSNQYX' 1 Q93 o 4 -6 JIFAVGD Mosf Likely To Succeed JANE BROWN ENNY SMALL 0,,Ml Jmfvljiw , ck XRMLU- 5' f 86 Sf 1 G 00, Klroood '9 4454492518 s I iL!2fx,f'lfL12'-if IIRIIIGIIHIEBS 49867 o, lo a 4 . When in school, we felt like small fish in a big pond, but out of school we felt quite proud of ourselves. It didn't take us long to become accustomed to the routines of Lake Shore. We liked Them all, probably, because they were so new to us. Dances and basketball games filled our social world. Quickly The month of June arrived and we had completed our first year at Lake Shore. Being eighth graders when school began again in September, we looked upon The new seventh graders with amazement, wondering if we were that small when we entered. We surely didn't Think so at the time. We were now qualified to ioin Y-Teens and Gra-Y, and to Take part in more school activities. A few of our boys were lucky enough to make Varsity Basketball. All these extra activities, along with the dances, football and basketball games, sped The school year to a close. Finally, we reached our goal-ninth graders at last! We were now the big wheels. The first semester of our ninth grade year offered some difficulties. Our gym was being remodeled in order to add bleachers and showers. Dances and games had to be postponed or worked out in other ways. Our Lookout Staff was organized early and was able to put out a September issue. Our first big proiect of the year was the election of class officers. With spirited campaigns, our officers and our sponsor, Mr. Hardage, were elected. With our ninth grade club organized, we put on the Hallowe'en Carnival, a great success, Though the stage show had to be performed in a partially completed gym. Following the carnival, the annual staff was organized and enthusiastically bgan its toil. The first dance of the year in the gym was the Lookout Christmas dance, a big success. mw3'mK'D , ' :S-9'32.-gg- 5-'omQ'O'g 3 m2'9.E'foa8-f 5 mrnalgg G'igmU's2 Um CDD'-13'N4'6m Hmmm -1-5 6Q.:35l5'O DJ 33 5591.30 Q. 54:0 'g,Hw'3-H64 5155303 :O cm -Cnimqfr U13-5 CD rn 'DO LQ' ,Q33.C2 4o ...fD45,-103C :Sai Q3---1 cu ' Q.. :EHS-g,gQn CDCQBCCI-Sm is-,fD?nI26f 7 3:11333 5- '90-of' 502235 sS5 Dfisw fvmo33fff8 l0:sc:m:l97V m-o--g C03 33 2-513 33- Km- -.nm3m-gl 390109,-fp 101.1 Q- I--.3-uso. ?'?s 0mm 'DOSSCED e '2ra Q -0-'Uma ggcnodgm j'-- '1 UI Jfimrbsggg 'Za-l'l-gn' Cm SEQ -T-237.-3.6,- 5' 6'fDmo.f'i '0 'cn5. CLASS PROPHECY This is Station LSJH-TV coming on the air. Here we are at the New Jacksonville Municipal Auditorium. This night of June 12, 1965, will be recorded in the annals of Jacksonville's history as a memorable occasion upon which this new magnificent and much needed audi- torium was dedicated. The spacious building was de- signed by architect Schley Hunt and built by the Yar- borough and Hamrick Construction Firm. Before the curtain goes up on this first benefit pro- gram, I will tell you some of the prominent personages in the audience. I am up in the TV box and right below me here I see Jacksonville's most famed reporters, Verna McClain and Artie Perry. Snapping pictures down there is Denis Umstot. Since tonight's performance is a benefit for the Cancer Fund, there are many people of the medi- cal profession here. Together tonight is the famous pair of scientists, Doctors Babs Carter and Pat Zipperer, who have iust discovered a cure for polio with the help of chemist Jerry Hartwig and pharmacist Tony Braden. I also see Doctor Wondle Bynum with her two nurses, Misses Margaret Lofton and Cecilia Williams. Way over in the corner is the famous team of veterinarians Dennis Enger and Patsy Roddenberry. Dentist Roy Reid and his assistant, Helen Hallenbeck, are also here. There are four other dentists down there too, Doctors Donald Farlow, Don Mobley, Jackie Allen and Robin Tinsley. Sitting in the front row are Dick Ralph, stock car driver ancl Jimmy Mangels, motor boat racer. Other sportsmen and sports women in evidence are Colin Cameron, Gloria Amos, Vir- ginia Hansford, Stan Parkinson and Buddy Mullis. Golfer Pat Robinson and baseball player Pat Smith are here also. The co-owners ofthe Collis and Futch Funeral Parlor are attending with their families. Well, I see the curtain is going up! The first act on the program is the famous dancing team of Brown, Ham- mond, and Stewart-Gee,-weren't they good? The house lights are coming on now. In the front row I see those two famous inventors Buddy Phillips and Blair Jarrett. Seated next to them are the heroic officers of the courageous ship Do-nut, Jack Mersereau and Bobby Markham. These two men with their crew, part of whom were the Lake Shore boys, Eddie Allen and K. L. David- son, saved a wrecked ship barehanded, and barefooted I might also say. Sitting near the back are pilots Bobby Richens and Robert Cassedy, escorting the lovely air hostesses Penny Pickels, Nancy Winegeart, and Nancy Easterling. They just flew the Nicholson and Hewett Flea Circus in for the performance tonight. I think some of the actors must have escaped into the audience. From behind the curtain tantalizing tunes are coming from the orchestra under the direction of Sam Matthews. The house lights are now dimming and the curtain is rising to reveal the daring act starring Lynn Brodt, animal trainer. incidentally, she collected some of her animals on an African safari with the missionaries, Angela Howell, Polly Polston and Billy Stevenson.-Well, I see that Miss Brodt's nurses, Annette Kirkland and Barbara Hilton didn't give any first aid tonight. Folks, you have a treat coming after the next act. Dur- ing intermission we are going back stage. While they are getting ready for the act, I will point out some more notable people for you. Many of the association's officers are here, some of whom are Sandra Osborne, Lois Leath, Nioma LaVorgna, Rae Jean Fletcher, Mary Ann Haynes, Linda Aaron, Doris Bryant and Helen Dwelle. We have just been informed of the disappear- ance of Miss June Highsmith, model from the Nuckolls and Morton Model Agency. It is believed that she might have eloped. The Bassford 8: Henry Detective Agency is working with the FBI agents, Billy Wilks, Gary Meadows and Janet Bishop, in an effort to find her. Seated with Miss Morton and Miss Nuckolls tonight are three of their models, Qayle Johnston, Donna Kay Paul, and Carol Stepp. Attending the show tonight are two of the world's most prominent writers, Susan Dalhouse and Nancy Pad- gett. Miss Dalhouse's new best seller is the story of Jacksonville's own lady ferry pilot, Judith Watson. While in Jacksonville the costumes are being cared for bythe Veal's Dry Cleaning Co. Over there I see two make-up artists Miss Faye Williams and Miss Shirley Turk- nett. Busily running around are dramatic coaches Jackie Brock and Shelly Rabideau, and music director June Turknett. Sitting at a desk over there is Tommy Scott, financial manager of the show. By-the-way, Jack Mer- cier, millionaire playboy is underwriting tonight's per- formance. Backstage also are editors Mary Jo Ellis and Ronald Dobrin. They are covering the show for their respective magazines. We have several of the cast's private secretaries here. They are Eueline Hardman, Frances Dean, Lavonia Owen, and Helen Lee. Also over there is the cast's private dietitian, Catherine Shank. Along with the help of nurses Dot Kelly and Joyce Kerr, she keeps the cast healthy. As l left backstage I met a group of girls renewing old acquaintances. Two nurses looking lovely are Margie Brockman and Gene Thomas. Also there are stenogra- phers Pat Hill, Katherine Brown, Jeanne Fouraker, and Pat Wormwood who were contestants in a recent beauty contest. The next act is Miss Wanda Thornton, skater.-Well, here we are out front again. From the Jacksonville Engineering Co. is Jimmy Foster, Gerard Califano, Robert Glines, Hal Blanton, and ,Robert Welsh. With them is TV engineer Donald Haral- son. Seated in front of him is Miss Bonnie Tapley, the owner of a famous girls' camp. Here in the audience are three of Jacksonville's lovely young matrons-Mrs. Ben Jones, nee Joyce Darden, Mrs. John Smith, nee Irma Jane Scruggs and Mrs. Bob Green, nee Nancy Graham. Next to him is LaVerne Sweeney, head of Girl Scouting in Jacksonville, with Jimmy Wentworth, head of the Bell Telephone Company. The flowers the performers in the next and last act are wearing are creations of the Mc- Cleary Nursery. Sitting near the back are .lane Brown, Fashion Designer, and Joyce Malmborg, professor at FSU. We are honored by having Ronald Ward, star agricul- turist of the year and Miss Jeanette Pickett, owner of the famous Blue Tea Room with us tonight. The curtain is now rising on a play starring actresses Marilyn Reedy, Ann McCallum, Bernice Kahn, and Mar- garet Norris, of international renown. The unusual light- ing effects are operated by William Coward of Coward Brothers, electricians. Well there goes the final curtain on this wonderful benefit opening. l am sure that many cancer patients will benefit from tonight's proceeds. This is Sandra Reese signing off for Station LSJH. First, we wish to thank the members of the faculty and student body who contributed in any way toward the production of this yearbook. To Miss Elizabeth Larsen, our ever helpful sponsor and dean of girls, goes our deepest gratitude. We wish to give our special thanks to Mrs. W. C. Maierfeldt and Mrs. S. L. Dalhouse who gave so generously of their time and effort without which the deadline would never have been met. We also wish to thank Mrs. R. E. Aaron for her help. We are' deeply indebted to our photoqaphers, Mr. W. L. Baker, Mr. P. E. Minor and our own Mr. W. W. Barnett. - Last, and most important, in' grateful appreciation, we acknowledge our ad- vertisers who were our gleam of hope when we feared there would be no annual. We also wish to express our sincere thanks to our parents and friends whose contributions gave us financial assistance so that we might have one last remem- brance of our years in Lake Shore Junior High School. VERNA LOIS MCCLAIN THAN KS TO ARTIE When the days were dark ana' dreary, And our goal not yet in sight, Artie Perry to the rescue, Made the future bright.
