FFA 4: FHA 3, GQSS jflsfozy The adventures in education of the class of 1955-'56 began in the kindergarten. For many it was a tearful beginning, for both the children and their mothers. Grade school days were happy and carefree. After a few broken limbs and noses and the usual amount of childhood diseases, we finally reached the sixth grade. Our next step was junior high school. We had looked forward to this with great anticipation. When we, the little girls and boys, had finally struggled through Junior High, we had a taste of what our high school days would be like. Most of the girls had decided to change their wardrobes altogether, and many were deciding what color of lipstick would be suitable. The boys were somewhat less excited than the girls. Then before we knew it, we were freshmen, the ones who were usually blamed for all the mistakes, and who had the privilege of sitting in the back during the assemblies. We elected class officers in each of our three divided sections. Then we began to raise money for our class by giving our freshman dance. This was a great success and lots of fun. After all the excitement of our first year, we felt as if we were ready for another step higher. This year we elected officers in the different sections of the tenth grade. We were more mature this year, and we began to get things organized. Our big sophomore dance had a very large turnout. We also had a new idea and gave a donkey baseball game. Fun was had by everyone, except the donkeys. By this time our years in high school were passing rapidly. At the beginning of our Junior year, we elected class officers. Jake Gingrich was president, Charlene Cipponeri was vice president, and Judy Gistinger our treasurer. Chuch Munyon was elected secretary but when his family moved, Nell Wright was chosen in his position. In our Junior year our big thrill was ordering our class rings. Most of the girls chose the pearl stones and some of the boys just the plain gold ones. We added to our treasury by giving roller skating parties at the Mt. Clemens Arena. This year we also gave our Junior play and another donkey baseball game. During this year, Barbara McCollum was chosen as a representative from the eleventh grade to work on the yearbook. She filled all the qualifications for a Co-editor then, and now. Some of the kids also had the idea of making pom-poms for the games and giving bake sales, and they proved to be very profitable. At the close of the year Ron Hofmann and Wilson Born were chosen to go to Wolverine Boys' State at East Lansing. Spring was here now in full bloom and we, the Junior class, invited the Seniors to the Junior-Senior picnic at Stony Lake. This was truly a joyous affair and we had plenty of swimming and boating to last us for the rest of the year. Our next important event came when it was time for the Junior-Senior Prom. That memorable evening will last for a long time in our high school memories. We danced to the music played by the Stardreamers. Some of the Junior girls had the pleasure of ushering at the Commencement for the class of 1955. Now we had finally reached the level for which we had aimed so long. We were Seniors! Again we elected our class officers. They were Jake Gingrich as president, Bob Johnson as vice president, Nellie Wright as secretary, and Judy Gistinger as our treasurer. It was a busy year for us, with senior pictures, the Christmas card sale, and our Senior play adding to the excitement. Other important events during the year were the Carnival and the Junior-Senior picnic. Then before we knew it, we were climbing aboard the Baltimore and Ohio, heading for Washington D.C. Boy! at last we were on our way. It would take books to really describe the wonderful trip. We returned knowing there would never be another vacation like this one. We got back just in time to get our Prom clothes ready for the Junior-Senior Prom. When we walked up to get our diplomas on Commencement night, we knew that we had climbed the hills: the mountains lie beyond. , ,,, .L, Z! . ,A . - 5 2- -b tv v , I, mx 1 Z- .Q W L ,X is ' N294 B- 2 y l l , V' i Z K..- , ,A JoE.S' V -- ur et? At the beginning of our Junior year we chose class officers and our student council members. Ron Gagnon, Doug Graham and Jerry Keller were our selections. Our projects started by selling magazine subscriptions. The campaign was very successful, and we sold more maga- zines than any previous class at Lake Shore, We had the concessions and dances after some of the football and basketball games. Then in December our class rings arrived. One of our most important events was our class play, but the highlight of the year was our Junior-Senior prom in June. To end a busy year, we had a Junior-Senior picnic when we treated the Seniors. We would like to thank our class sponsors, Mrs, Iiles and Mr. Crellin for helping the class in their many activities. Under Mr. Krause's leadership the debaters studied the question Should the Federal Govern- ment Guarantee Higher Education to Qualified High School Graduates Through Grants to Colleges? They won six out of eight debates and were awarded the University of Michigan plaque. In the regional contest at Mill- ington, Michigan, they defeated Harbor Beach but lost to Weidman High School. This gave them second place in the regional finals. A very good record, team! These girls are busy every day help- ing to keep the school running smooth- ly. They collect absence slips, answer the phone, run errands, type and file. This gives them actual experience in the operation of an office. First row: Roberta Glander, Miss But- ler, Beverly Foster. Other returning lettermen were: Ken Marzka, Wayne Gunningham Bob Johnson, and Allison Tyrrell. Juniors were: Mike Thomas, Terry Hurley, Ed Martin, Doug Graham, Bill Loader, and Jim Kolomyski. The team was well coached and in good shape for the first game. Fitzgerald was the first foe to invade the Shorians gridiron. Lake Shore scored in the last four minutes to come through with a 12-'7 victory. Next came Roseville and Warren with 20-19 and 6-0 victories. Riding the victory trail the Shorians came to a big Center Line team and lost 26-6. The next two games the roof really fell in with two losses, a close one to Utica 7-6 and a 9-0 beating from Lakeview. The Shorians still wanted a winning season and showed it by beating Eastland 20-19. The team had hopes of having a 5-win 3-loss season but they were smashed by a pepped up South Lake team, 6-O. The final record for the season was 4 wins and 4 losses. Don Sharpe and Bob Kramer made the All Bi-County first team, with Jake Gingrich, Ken Marzka, Ed Martin, Doug Graham, and Terry Hurley making honorable mentions. The team was greatly helped by newcomers Bob Kramer, Jerry Keller, Tom Spear. Jake Gingrich had five touchdowns, high for the season. Ed Martin had a 5. 1 yard per carry average to lead the team in yards per try. Mr. Brown's reserve had a 1-4 record, while the Jr. High tied for the championship with a 4-1 'record under Mr. Rumler. .WGSGFUQS W it Filly First row: D. Kretchman, H. Selegean, E. Socia, S. But Utica ended that idea with two close, but decisive victories. Lake Shore was led by Co-captains Don Sharpe and Ken Marzka who had 26. 8 and 15, 3 averages. A very important factor was the passing of Terry Hurley and Ed Martin, plus the unerring defensive work of Mike Thomas. The team is the highest scoring outfit in the history of Lake Shore. Don Sharpe, a senior, set the school and Bi-County records as he meshed 40 points against South Lake, In the same game the Shorians scored a total of 95 points to break all existing Bi-County and school records. Thus far the team has averaged over 67 points a game. Coach Crellin and his team could go a long way in the tournaments with a few breaks. X .feserue asfefgaf First row: Coach M. 7.3, T n D.
