PU PIL PERSCNNEL SERVICES William Sawin Jr Attendance Phyllis Roop, Nurse Edward J. Firestone Guidance The modern school has recognized the fact that pupils have a need for some special helps in order to supplement the services that classroom teachers render in their own rooms. These special services which are to be found at Lake Shore Central are attendance, health and guidance. Pupil attendance is supervised by Mr. Sawin who also serves as the person in charge of pupil transportation. He is responsible for maintaining all of the pupil attendance records, and, in this capacity, he must also inquire into pupil absences. Since good attendance is so important in the matter of being successful in school, Mr. Sawin is constantly trying to help each pupil to improve his attendance habits. Since many reasons for poor attendance at school are the results of, or are in some way related to the health of the individual, the services of Miss Roop, our school nurse, are very impor- tant. She must try to keep an accurate chart of the health status of each individual in the school. She does this through the health records which she keeps for each pupil. During the course of the year, Miss Roop gives some examinations such as sight and hearing tests, and assists the school doctor in conducting the more complete examinations which are done yearly. Miss Roop works closely with pupils and their parents in an effort to assist each pupil to achieve the best possible state of health. Not all pupil problems are the result of poor health, however, and still another service is needed and offered at our school. ln the process of growing up, many questions arise as the pupil begins to assume more adult ways of thinking. Mr. Firestone, the guidance counselor, is in the school for just that purpose. His office is primarily for the pupils. He provides those sources of information which are necessary to help the pupil solve his problems and answer his or her questions. The chief information which Mr. Firestone is asked to supply concerns education and occupations, However, he works with any pupil who has any sort of problem to try, by individual counseling, to help that pupil to find his own answers to his problem. This is one characteristic of all of the pupil personnel services. Their principal aim is to help children to help themselves to adjust to the problems of growing up, whatever these problems may be. 64 0 STOCKER AUTO SALES-Chrysler-Plymouth-Quality Used Cars

ATHLETIC COUNCIL The Athletic Council has been accountable for the business proceedings and programs ot' the athletic activities in Lake Shore Central. lt has done a considerable amount in furthering the interest and spirit of all sports. This year our Athletic Council is under the able supervision of Mrs. Camplin and Mr. Found. The meetings are held on the first Monday of each month. An activity which the council has participated in is selling tickets for both basketball and football games. The council this year also had a dance which recognized the beginning of basketball season. After the meetings. sports for both boys and girls were played. There was never any arguing or bickering around the members with the exception ot' the boys' protests for spending Athletic Council money for girls' athletic awards. The council's meetings were always conducted in strict parliamentary procedure with a few good-natured suggestions. unrecognized by the floor. All in all we feel that we have helped to make this organization prominant in L. S. C. 66 0 BOBS SUPER MARKET-Angolc:'s Finest Food Store
