The upper Quinault Valley was settled long before a road was built. The settlers, like the Ind- ians, used canoes on the river and trails through the forest to get to and from the outside. People like Alvin Higley fHigley Peak bears hisrnhmel brought their families and homesteaded on the upper Quinault River in the middle eighteen eighties. Late in the next de- cade families named Kestner and Olson arrived. The latter group packed across Anderson Pass to get in. One of the early homesteaders, Mr. Earnest Fishel who lived in Neilton, was the first forest ranger in the Quin- ault District. Another nnativen forester, who homesteaded here in 1911, is Ernest Vorhees. Within a decade he start- ed a pack train for sportsmen and t0uriStS. During a thirty year period he packed thousands of people into the Olympic Mountains. Vorhees instigated the organization which built and operated the Olympic Chalet in the nlowciividen country. Eventually this was included in the Olympic National Park. The Chalet was recently destroyed by an avalanche. Early logging was done over railroads built by the Pol- son Logging Company when the nnativesn were still transport- horse, and canoe. Finally build roads. The bridge at Amanda Park, was com- ing themselves by foot trail, pack they prevailed upon the state to across the lower Quinault River, leted in 1920. To these pioneers and others whose names are not men- tioned, we give thanks for their work well done and to them we dedicate this edition of the 1958 TIMBERLINE.
