Not only in our school, town, or even country, but in the whole universe. With the new year came a new President, and the voice of America came alive. Viet Nam moratoriums proclaimed the disapproval of a long fought war by many Americans, while most of our countrymen hailed their happiness at the first man, an American, walking on the moon. For our school the changes were light but meaningful - a loss of students really brought us closer together, and an added building broadened our educational facilities. This was the year that the Seniors deepened their love for their school and realized that the end of high school was near: the Juniors focused their thoughts on next year: and the Sophomores and Freshmen became more aware of the inner spirit of L.P.H.S. We, THE DELTAN staff, have strived to capture the big and even small moments that make L.P.H.S. what it is - a school among millions, but singular within itself because we, its students, have made it something special. In later years we hope you will look back on the school year, 1969-'70, with pleasant memories and will open with pride our cherished accomplishment, THE DELTAN of 1970. I 34 School Boord Foced New Problems With each year greater problems have arisen in the field of public education. This year espe- cially, the East Carroll Parish School Board was faced with a crisis of unique content. Because of orders for total desegregation by the U.S. Supreme Court, these leaders did their best and spent many long hours with the goal of preserving public educa tion. B. A. PrincipaI's Tasks Varied l 1 Jessie Jean Gill Principal A person of outstanding leadership and personality, Jessie Jean Gill finished her third year as principal of Lake Providence High School. She has strived to make our school one to be respected by others and has tried to relate a closeness among the students and faculty. Her days were filled with signing excuses, scheduling school events, and seeing that every little detail went smoothly. Her creativity and vital interest have given distinction to every phase of school life. She stems her talent into her after-school hours by spending much time on her hobby - ceramics. Mrs. Gill graduated from L.S.U. where she earned a M.Ed. Assistont's Office Locoted In Junior High John W. Hopkins Assistont Principol Behind every well-run institution there is one person who must assist in making sure everything goes well. John W. Hopkins, assistant principal, did just this. His office, located in the junior high building, was the center of hectic mornings and long afternoons. His personal interest toward the students helped to make hirn a good leader of our school. Unfailing energy and quiet devotion made him indispensable to the students and faculty of Lake Providence High School. Mr. Hopkins obtained a B. S. from Northeast State College. Days filled with hectic tasks and impatient students always found Kay Russell school secretary ready and willing to do her best Mr Russell has capably filled this roll for several years In Appreciation This year new and abrupt changes came to our school. Because of the great loss of so many students and faculty members who had long been a part of Lake Providence High School, we not only dedicate, but give in appreciation, THE DELTAN of 1970, to all these people who contri- buted so much to our school. Your leaving was not only felt by each of us who remained behind, but even the building seemed saddened by your absence. Although you are physically gone, the love and spirit which you possessed for Lake Providence High School is ever present. Look back on all the fun and cherished moments that you shared at school, and maybe the future can be faced with courage and determination. Remember it with pride and you will remem- ber it as a great school because you gave your part in making it so. The memory of Lake Providence High School as you remember it will be one thing to hold on to many years from now. Hear the ringing of the bell, the bouncing of the ball, the treading of a friend's feet. Think of moments with friends at noon and the silence of the hall after a busy day. And, in those later years you will be one who will say, Lake Providence High School? Yes, I knew it when . . . So, with happiness and sadness, tears and smiles, pride and faith, we give to you, in apprecia- tion, THE DELTAN of 1970. X X K 8 it 2:-, - ' - - A' . N ,:'. Q9 vs I if qi N . ' t aa 2 . With the starting of a new school year, a new life and bond came over our student body. On Fridays there was an undefinable feeling that enhanced tne halls and classrooms. In the afternoon came spirited pep rallies, and the band performed in a fine fashion. Enthusiasm was depicted with waving streamers, smashing drums, and the distant crackle of clapping hands. Streamers of red, white, and blue fluttered on all the car aerials in town to state with pride that we were Panther fans. Birthdays were special occasions shared by all, and several Panthers were honored on their big day. Hamley Field was invaded on Friday nights by enthusiastic fans who gave their unfailing spirit and support to the Panthers - District 2-A champs. The seriousness of our goals could be witnessed as the faces of our football players showed anxiety on the day of the big game. Our days weren't all filled with fun and games though, as many long hours were spent in study and deep concentration. Much of our time was spent in the library and our neat and spacious cafeteria, which was decorated at different times of the year to give it a much warmer and welcoming atmosphere. The office was the hub of activity, where one, could often catch any one of our teachers in a relaxed and easy manner. Last walks down the hall to our lockers marked with finality the end of another long hard day and the beginning of an even longer study-filled night. , 4 will OPI :A H.. Gayle Thames, THE DELTAN editor, attended Leadership, where she learned the correct and fashionable ways of editing a yearbook. While there she attended classes and lec- tures each morning and afternoon. She was given homework in drawing layouts and writing copy and was invited to show the other students the outstanding qualities of her yearbook. When the yearbooks were rated, THE DELTAN received top honors The Delton Stuf Only through hard work and determination can a good yearbook be produced. The 1970 DELTAN staff, along with an unreplaceable Mrs. Thelma Clement, have strived to make this yearbook the best ever. With early stunmer came the selling of ads. The fall brought long hours of taking pictures, writing copy, drawing up lay-outs, and selling yearbook subscriptions. Finally in winter the final deadline, had to be met and sighs of relief accentuated the mailing of the last pages. Careful plans and well thought-out preparations were vital char- acteristics of this year's yearbook. We are especially proud of our endsheets, title page and color pictures - in fact, we're proud of the entire book. These students, from grades ten through twelve, were inducted into the National Honor Soci- ety because of their outstanding qualities of leadership, service, scholarship, and character. This year they sponsored the Christ- mas tree in the hall, a Christmas ball contest for each home- room, and large brightly painted letters, spelling out NOEL for the front of the school. Their interest stemmed to the students of L. P.H .S. , as they sent personal cards to those with unhappy occasions in their family life. Girls representing our school were Wanda Jong, Gayle Thames, and Cathy Un- derwood . 59 GAYLE THAMES Three Years Cheerleaders' Activities Three seniors, two juniors and one sophomore made up the Panther squad of cheerleaders. Their sponsor, Mrs. Billie Wilson, aided in making this year one of the most spirited for L. P.H. S. The cheerleaders spent long hours after and during school, putting much energy in their activi- ties. Their imagination and abilities characterized their bust signs for the Friday night games and the skits for the pep rallies. For the seniors of Lake Providence High School 1970 brings a new experience which is the dream of every youngster since it all began twelve years ago - graduation from high school. Twelve long, yet somewhat fleeting years, of work and play with those friends, old and new, who have shared the big and even small moments of high school life with LIS. This year brings to a close a time in each of our lives which will long remain with us and will ever remind us of the cherished feelings we all held for our friends and our school. We, as seniors, have overcome the first and most significant step on the long and momentous stairway of life. Now as we go our separate ways and each step becomes a little higher and a little harder to climb, our dreams become realities and Lake Providence High School will no longer be a part of the indescribable present but will be known as the golden past. Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal. - Pamela Vaull Starr David Michael 98 Fleming, Ainsworth, Ronnie Glenn 97 Allen, Barbara Jean 94 Allen, Clovese Marie 94 Allen, David Rickey 56, 57, 88
