The win was against the Elkton Elks at Elkton and the Diver football squad spoiled their Homecoming. Head Coach Brian Heupel and assistant Dave Schmidt saw the improvement made by the Divers as the season progressed. With five seniors on the team, the leadership and inspiration was with the team through every minute of practice and during the games. Every player worked their hardest and always kept going no matter how tough the situation was. As a team the Divers averaged 71 yards rushing and 80 yards passing per game. Leading rush- ers for the Divers were Brian Easland and Scott Carlson. Eas- land compiled 201 yards on 59 carries while Carlson had 197 yard on 73 attempts on the sea- son. Todd French threw 158 times completing 58 for 534 yards. He also had 8 touchdown passes. Leading receiver was Kirk Zeeck, who caught the foot- ball 20 times for 276 yards. Tim Scheidt had 20 receptions for 223 yards. The Diver defense was led by senior linebacker Todd French who had 116 tackles, one fumble recovery, and one interception. French averaged 15 tackles per game. Senior lineman Jay Hojer and Jadd Odegaard had 80 tackles a piece. Todd French was named All- Conference in the Eastern Dako- ta Conference. Jay Hojer and Jadd Odegaard were given hon- orable mention honors. The team chose Todd French as Most-Valueable, Brian Easland as Most Promis- ing and Most Improved, and Jay Hojer as Most Inspirational. Inexperience and Youth Hurts Divers The Lady Divers Basketball team was very young during the 1987-88 season. Having just two Seniors returning, Coach Prath- er was forced to play underclass- men. Although the Divers only won one game, the experince and playing time gained by the un- derclassmen will pay off in the years to come. Senior Stacia Wilkinson lead the team with 11 points and 10 rebounds per contest. Freshmen Paula Bratland averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds per game. Lisa Bratland added 7 points and 4 points per game. Team awards were given to Stacia Wil- kinson as Most Valuable. Amy Danielson received Most Prom- ising while the Most Improved went to Shelly McMasters. Lisa Bratland was selected as Most Inspirational. Stacia Wilkinson also won All-Conference honors in both the Eastern Dakota Con- ference and the Dakota Valley Conference. 22 Girls Basketball Back row - Head Coach Shelley Prather, Stacy Stewart, Holly Wilkinson, Sheila Jones, Amy Danielson, Maria Bergan, Tammy Scheidt, and Coach Klark Thomsen. The Divers earned re- spect around the state as they defeated top teams such as Ar- lington, Howard and Elkton. The experienced team had a very high goal of reaching the state tournament, but that dream ended in the second round of the District tourna- ment. The Divers could not con- trol the Ramona Rockets as they beat the Divers with a 3-point field goal with only seconds left in the game. But the Divers bounced back the next night by beating the Elkton Elks for third place. It was a great victory to cap an outstanding season. Under the, direction of Head Coach Brian Heupel and assis- tant coach Klark Thomsen, the Divers averaged 65 points a game while giving up 55 points a game. Three seniors lead the Divers: Micahael Anderson, Todd French and Jay Hojer. Mi- chael was the leading scorer for the Divers, averaging 22 points a game. Juniors Steve Hasche and David Hovde averaged 16 and 10 points respectively. Both Anderson and Hasche controlled 24 Boys Basketball the boards for the Divers, rip- ping down 10 rebounds per game. Individual awards went to Mi- chael Anderson for Most Valu- able, Brad Easland for Most Im- proved, Todd French for Most Inspirational and Kirk Zeeck for Most Promising. Both Michbael Anderson and Steve Hasche ear- ned All-conference honors in both the Dakota Valley Confer- ence and Eastern Dakota Con- ference. Senior Stacia Wilkinson was still sidelined with an injury from the basket- ball season and despite hard work by underclassmen, the Di- vers could only manage 4 victo- ries while accumulating 13 losses. Junior Lisa Bratland lead all servers with 35 ace serves and a serving percentage og 78%. She also accounted for 82 of the 370 team points scored. Lisa hard work earned her the MVP award. Brab Casper, Tammy French Most Valuable Player Lisa Brat- land was also the Diver’s leading scorer. 26 Girls Volleyball and Paula Bratland had serving percentages of 83, 86, and 85%. Track Teams Experience Successful Season Boys Improve While Girls Get Stronger The Lake Preston boys track team continued to improve this year. More boys participated in track and several upperclassmen provided leadership and enthu- siasm as the season progressed. Although the team scored few firsts during the year, they con- sistantly had athletes finishing second, third or fourth. The boys managed to place fourth at the Eastern Dakota Conference track meet and second at the Da- kota Valley Conference track meet. Michael Anderson placed at several meets in the triple jump. He also broke the school record several times, including his jumps at the region track meet that missed qualifying for state by one-half inch. Other individ- uals having good years included Todd French and Darrin Suess in the hurdles, Wade Mobley in Above - Michael works on his technique. The girls track team contin- ued to build a strong track tradi- tion in Lake Preston. The 800- meter relay was undefeated all year long and the 1600-meter re- lay finished first or second at most meets. The girls success hinged partially on the depth of the team. A hamstring injury to senior Dana Houser might have meant defeat for the Diver relay teams, but eighth grader MAria Bergan filled in for Dana. With Maria running one leg of the re- lay, the team qualified for the state meet. Dana recovered in time to run at the state meet. In addition to the Diver re- lays, Sprinter Tracy and Stacy Stewart continued to dominate the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Support in the field events came from Dana Houser, Maria Ber- gan and Jennifer Blaschford. Teresa Anderson run the longer races and Tammy Scheidt con- tinued to improve in the open 400-meter dash. The girls season reached a peak when they fin- shed the state track meet num- ber two overall (See pages 32-33 for more details.). Team awards for the girls team went to Stacy Stewart for Most Valuable, Tammy Scheidt for Most Promising, Maria Ber- gan for Most Improved and Dana Houser for Most Inspira- tional. Girls Set State 800-Meter Relay Record The Lake Preston girls track team had “perfect” hand-offs on the way to setting a new state re- cord of 1.46.68 in the 800-meter relay. The foursome of Tracy Stewart, Stacy Stewart, Tammy Scheidt, and Dana Houser also hold the state record for the 1600-meter relay. The Lake Preston track team placed second overall at the State B track meet, improving on last years fourth place finish. The 800-meter relay had not been beat all year long, even though Dana Houser had been sidelined for a month with a pulled hamstring. Eighth grader Maria Bergan ran in Dana’s place during the last part of the year, including the region track meet. The Preston relay team also won the 1600-meter relay at the state meet. Maria ran in the prelims on Friday, while Dana ran in the finals on Saturday. Providing the points that gave the Divers their second place overall finish were sisters Stacy and Tracy Stewart. Stacy won the 100-meter dash and placed second in the 200-meter dash. Tracy took third in the 100-me- ter and fifth in 200-meter dash. Lake Preston finished second overall with 46 points. Bridge- water won the state meet with a total of 56 points. 30 State Meet Top - Tracy Stewart comes out of the blocks at Brandon Valley (Argus Leader photo). It was the first year that Tammy ran cross country. It was, in fact, the first time that LPHS had cross country team in several years. At the state meet, Tammy finished 28th out of 100 runners. Tammy had to run 3000 meters (about 1.8 miles) at the meet, which was held at Meadowbrook golf course in Huron.
