Un- der the direction of head coach Brian Heupel and assistant David Schmidt the Divers were in some close contests, but the final score was not in their favor. Every player worked hard and as a team, the Di- vers had a lot of determination. Offensively the Divers averaged 70.8 yards rushing per game and 79.8 yards per game passing. Indi- vidually, David Hovde led all rush- ers with 148 yards on 58 carries. Brad Easland was second with 117 yards on 80 attempts. Todd French threw 126 times and completed 42 for 620 yards. Leading receiver for the Divers was Jason Johnson as he caught the football 13 times for 256 yards. Tim Scheidt had 11 recep- tions for 143 yards. The defense was led by tackle Jay Hojer as he had 79 individual tackles and averaged 9.8 per game. Jeff Hesby had 66, Brian Carlson had 64, and Todd French had 51 tackles. Senior Jeff Hesby was chose all- Eastern Dakota Conference player and Jay Hojer received honorable mention. The team voted Jeff Hes- by most valuable, Brady Larsen most promising, Tim Scheidt most improved, and Jay Hojer as most in- spirational. Middle left-Jason Johnson runs for a big gain against the Woodchucks. Middle right-Several Divers gang tackle a Wood- chuck for no gain. Above-Inside the hud- dle, Todd French calls the next play, “Jadd, Z out; Kirk, down and across; Jeff, fly; David, Z in and around; and Scott, flare left. Girls Basketball The Divers played hard dur- ing the 86-87 season, compiling a 10-12 record along the way. A highlight of the year was beating Arlington in the first round of Eastern Dakota Conference Basketball Tournament. The Divers placed second overall in that tournament, losing in the championship game to Castle- wood. The Divers placed third in the district tournament and failed to reach the region tourna- ment. Senior Dawn Tolzin lead the team with a 15 points per game average and she also pulled down 15 rebounds per game. Lynne Casper averaged 9 points a game and Stacia Wilkinson added 8 points and 11 rebounds per game. For the role Dawn played dur- ing the season she was chosen Most Valuable by her team- mates. Sophomore Teresa An- derson was chosen Most Im- proved and Most Promising. Se- nior Amy Wienk was voted Most Inspirational. The Divers were coached by Shelley Prather and Klark Thomsen. Right-Dawn Tolzin goes over two Elkton defendsers to score. Far right-Shawn Hasche puts up the ball for two points despite a hand in her face. Below- “Should I or shouldn’t I?” Lynne Casper thinks to herself. Front row-Teresa Davis, Darlene Larsen, Shelly McMasters, Marsha Ellingson, Tina Carlson and Jennifer Blachford. 2nd row-Teresa Anderson, Dana Houser, Vikki Anderson, Renae Olson, Tammy French and Renae Olson. 3rd row-Sheri Jacobsen. Julie Tolzin, Lisa Bratland, Cherrlyn Karban and Lynne Casper.
