Below-Darlene Larsen is so hungry that she doesn’t use silverware. Middle-Students found time eat during Casaino Night. The most common questions asked by students are “What is for dinner?’’ and “When do we eat?” It is no surprise that the busiest place in the school is the lunch room. Pizza and Mexican food are favorites of the students and they are served on a regular basis in the lunch room. When asked about favorite pastimes, students will say watching TV, listening to music, going to movies or driving around. But while they are doing any of these things they are also likely to be eating. Below-Helen Jones serves another noon meal. 2 Student Life Mary Smith enjoys Mexican food during a dinner planned and made by the Spanish II class. Below-Elaine Jensen serves Mike Gunderson lunch. Un- der the direction of head coach Brian Heupel and assistant David Schmidt the Divers were in some close contests, but the final score was not in their favor. Every player worked hard and as a team, the Di- vers had a lot of determination. Offensively the Divers averaged 70.8 yards rushing per game and 79.8 yards per game passing. Indi- vidually, David Hovde led all rush- ers with 148 yards on 58 carries. Brad Easland was second with 117 yards on 80 attempts. Todd French threw 126 times and completed 42 for 620 yards. A highlight of the year was beating Arlington in the first round of Eastern Dakota Conference Basketball Tournament. The Divers placed second overall in that tournament, losing in the championship game to Castle- wood. The Divers placed third in the district tournament and failed to reach the region tourna- ment. Senior Dawn Tolzin lead the team with a 15 points per game average and she also pulled down 15 rebounds per game. Lynne Casper averaged 9 points a game and Stacia Wilkinson added 8 points and 11 rebounds per game. For the role Dawn played dur- ing the season she was chosen Most Valuable by her team- mates. Girls Basketball 15 Basketball Brian Carlson takes a “deep” breath before attempting a shot. “I should have been in ballet.” was the quote from David Jibben. The young Diver team had a rough season but they made many improve- ments as the year progressed. The Divers surprised many teams by playing tough for three quarters. But the inexperience would surface late in the game, prevent- ing the Divers from winning. The young Divers brought an exciting type of bas- ketball back to Lake Preston, surprising teams like Deubrook and Hamlin, who were lucky to leave Lake Preston with a win. Fan support was strong the entire year. Leaders for Coach Heupel’s team were Michael Anderson and Steve Hasche. Both Michael and Steve averaged 15.5 points and 8 rebounds per game. Leaders from the freethrow line were Kirk Zeeck, Michael Anderson and David Hovde, av- eraging 78%, 74% and 70% respectively. Stacia Wilkinson had the most spikes, ending up with 92 out of 103 for 89%. Coach Steve Salter commented on the season saying “The competition was tough, but when the girls had to they gave it all they had. We had a good team but we also had a tough schedule. Second place in the Region is nothing to be ashamed of. We set our sights high, to make the State Tournament, we just came up one game short. Arlington had a good team and they went to state and got 3rd place. They represented our re- gion well. Lynne Casper received all conference for the 2nd year in a rowand was also named to the Lake Preston Invitational All Tournament Team. Divers Make Waves at State Meet On the last race of the season The Lake Preston Girls team not only won, but they set a new state record doing it! The quartet of Tammy Scheidt, Dana Hous- er, Stacy Stewart and Tracy Stewart placed first in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 4:06.96 to claim the first state record ever by a Lake Preston track team. Stacy Stewart placed 1st and 2nd in the 100 and 200 meter dashes while sister Tracy captured 4th and 5th place in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. The Divers scored 34 points at the state meet to place 4th overall in the B division. Dana Houser qualified for the State Track Meet in the 400 meter dash, but she failed to make the finals. The 800 meter relay team also qualified for the State Meet but was disqualified during the prelims. The success at the state meet was an excellent way to finish a good year for the divers. There were many hard working tracksters that helped the Divers place high in several meets. Sophomore Teresa Anderson ran a tough 1600 meter run during the year and had an excellent chance at qualifying for the state meet until an injury prevented her from run- ning late in the year.
