Betty Wienk, secretary. Paul Nelson, high school principal. Helen Gottsleben, secretary Administration Puts Education Together The LPHS Administration went through many changes in 1983-84. The biggest was the announcement from B.J. Gottsleben of his res- ignation of superintendant. B.J. retired after thirteen years of service to the educating of Lake Preston's youth. His wife Helen also re- tired in 1984. She worked as a secretary and food advisor for nine years. Jim Teller was hired as the new elementary school principal and sixth grade teacher. He came to Lake Pres- ton after working for some time in Platte. An- other new face on the LPHS administrative force was Jewel Janssen. Mrs. Janssen was hired as business manager in March of '84. Betty Wienk, secretary, has been a familiar face for three years now and plans on staying at LPHS many more. Paul Nelson has served as principal for two years along with teaching eighth grade science. Jewel Janssen, business manager. 5 Lori Limoges: Vocal music teacher Ray Schulte: Vo. Teachers Goof-Off Together Teaching is not all work at LPHS as seen from these snap-shots. The Prestonian photographers caught just as many teachers goofing off as they did hard at work. Mr. Sorkness makes a quick call to his “bookie between classes. “Boy I needed this! thinks Mr. Huepel after a long day of trying to keep the accounting class in line on a field trip to SDSU. 12 Mrs. Sorkness, caught growling to herself during play rehearsal. It was hard adjusting to new teachers and the changing of classes, but they did fine. Now that they are used to the schedule they can look for- ward to 1988-89 when they will be seniors and looking down on all other classes instead of up. Eighth Graders Move On Together Having made the adjustment to Junior High, the Class of 1988 was able to enjoy a year of activity and work. Besides the usual eighth grade activities, sev- eral students played in varsity band and some of the boys played on the B basketball team. These ac- tivities supplemented the daily fare of American History, Science, Math, English and Physical Edu- cation. At the end of the year, as they prepared to move on to become freshmen, the American Legion recognized Micheal Anderson and Vickie Anderson with citizenship awards. On May 20,1984 they took part in their first graduation ceremony as they moved on to become Senior High School students. J%o0 n- 26 Seniors Enjoy Being Together The Class of '84, after a previous year of working together on prom, sat back and watched things happen during 1983-84. Rick Longville and Darin Johnson came back to school as members of the South Dakota National Guard. During the year the class took two trips, one to watch the Supreme Court in action in Huron and one to Pierre to watch the legislature in action. Many of the Seniors played in sports, were on the paper staff, annual staff and served on the student council. Darin Johnson. Where is he? In the girls' bath- room. Why? We don't really know. One of the weaknesses was shooting from the free throw line and field goals. The girls had a percentage of 28% shooting over 60 shots per game. Less than half of the free throws attempted were made. Two especially big wins were the Hamlin and Elkton games. If hard work is done to improve their shoot- ing and they spend as much time as possible practicing basketball, the Divers can look to a good season next year and the years to come. At the end of the year the girls voted Kay Osvog as Most Valuable, Dawn Tolzin Most Im- proved, Bonni Ellingson Most Inspirational, and Sheri Jacobsen as Most Promising. Kim Jacobsen was part of the All Conference team. The girls ended the season putting up a good fight in the district tournament against DeSmet. They ended the season with 9 wins and 11 losses. Working Together Towards Winning The Diver football team ended the season with a 2-6 record. Although the win column doesn't show it, much improvement was seen by the fans. Leading rusher for the Divers was junior Rick Holland carrying 510 yards in 140 car- ries, averaging 3.6 yards per carry. Rick was also leading pass receiver with 133 yards in 10 receptions. Mike Tolzin received 10 receptions for 102 yards. Rick again led the Divers in touchdowns by running in 5 and receiving 2. Paul Mobley, quarterback, completed 36 passes for 3 touchdowns. As a team, the griders averaged 96 yards on the ground and 50 yards in the air per game. Senior Rick Longville led the defense aver- aging 15.6 tackles per game. Dan Holm and Jeff Iverson followed averaging 11 tackles each. The Divers gave up 133 yards rushing and 95 yards passing a game. The last game of the season against the Howard Tigers was the highlight of the sea- son. The seniors ended their high school ca- reers in style with a victory. Team awards were given to Greg Hesby, Ron Longville, and Rick Holland. Hesby re- ceived most inspirational, Longville was elect- ed most improved, and Holland was chosen most valuable and most promising. Coach Huepel stated, Looking back at the schedule, every game we played we were with- in one touchdown going into the fourth quar- ter which shows that we were in every game. However, we just didn't do the little things it takes to win. I thought we'd have a better record, however I'm very happy with the effort the kids put out through the year. They never gave up and always worked hard. Coach Schmidt stated, I felt we have defin- ately improved over last year. With a few breaks, we could have easily been 4-4 or 6-2 instead of 2-6. We have a lot of young talent. Next year I would expect the Divers to be at least 500. 37 DeSmet-Lake Preston Wrestling Co-op. Back row left to right: Cheerleaders Kristi Parsen and Audra Sass. Lake Preston And DeSmet Join Together In Co-op This endeavor between DeSmet-Lake Preston proved to provide the opportunity for the two schools to establish a sound wrestling program. Wrestlers from both schools had the opportunity to achieve a successful season. The efforts put forth by seniors Mike Johnson, Jay Carlson, Greg Hesby, Jpe Stoddard, Tom Martens, Paul Mobley and Dan Holm established framework to build a very competitive co-op program for many years to come. The season was highlighted by a third place finish in Districts and Clark and the qualifying of nine wrestlers to Regions at Web- ster. Out of the nine, Jim Behm at 105 pounds and Mike Johnson at 112 pounds qualified for the State meet at Watertown. According to Coach Ron Larsen, The most important factor of the entire program was the cooperation of the young athletes and their un- selfish attitude in making a cooperative program work. 38 We They Clear Lake 12 55 Madison 18 37 Arlington 12 49 Flandreau 43 20 Hamlin 27 32 Arlington 15 46 Doland 43 19 Sioux Valley 36 23 Sunshine Bible 44 18 Howard 16 45 Wessington Springs 27 33 Tournament Points Place Faulkton 88 5th Arlington 86.5 4th LC Conference 54 6th District 104.5 3rd Region 38 State 5 Dan Holm struggles hard with his opponent. 39 Joe Staddard gets a grip on a Hamlin Charger. Adjusting to another new coach was an obstacle that had to be cleared as in the last three years. Suffering from lack of depth from the bench and minor injuries the Divers couldn't quite put it together at the beginning of the season. Things started to im- prove after their first victory over Henry. Much change could be seen since the beginning of the sea- son. The team was led by seniors Mike Tolzin, Jeff Iver- son and Rick Longville with Sophomores Lon Brat- land, Ron Longville and Darwin Smith seeing a lot of playing time. Awards winners were Mike Tolzin — most valuable; Lon Bratland — most improved; and Daren Guischer — most promising and most inspirational. 41 Varsity team. They all placed ninth in their events, this is a very big accomplish- ment as there were 128 schools competing. Coach Guisher stated, All the kids did extremely well for being so nervous. It was a good education for the kids to see how others run. 44 Mr. Guisher measures at the long jump. Amy Wienk hands off to Kim Jacobson during a relay. Chorus Blends Harmony Together The LPHS Mixed Chorus, Girls Glee, and Swing Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Limoges, had a very busy schedule this year. In August new officers were chosen. Michelle Jensen was elected president. Jay Carlson was chosen vice-president, and Carol Hesby received secretary-treasurer. There was a change from Band Mothers to Music Boosters to include the chorus. As a fundraisers chorus and band members picked corn, sold pizzas, and Lake Preston and DeSmet Swing Choirs combined their talents for a concert. In March the high school chorus attended a festival in Salem. The Junior high chorus also attended a festival but in Brookings. Soloists and ensembles performed at the small group contest in April and mixed chorus and girls glee attended the large group contest in May. For swing choir the forty-five minutes of practice and the voice lessons paid off when they attended the Northern State College Jazz Festival in January and won first place out of five schools. They also put on many concerts in the community and attended the Huron Jazz Festival. All-State Chorus selections this year were Paul Mobley. Todd Carlson, Juli Jensen, Cheri Janssen, alternate Caryn Ellingson, and alternate Jana Iverson. Juli Jensen and Paul Mobley spent a week in Spearfish for the Honor Choir Concert performed March 2nd at the American Choral Directors Association Regional Con- vention. Audra Holds Staff Together The 1983-84 edition of the Blue Gold was success- fully led by Editor Audra Sass and Advisor Mrs. Sork- ness. The paper not only publicizied events and ac- complishments around the school, but also served oth- er valuable purposes as well. It gave a number of staff members the opportunity to express a variety of opin- ions on both school and outside issues by means of editorials and letters to the editor. It offered journal- ism students an opportunity to put concepts into prac- tice and see them in print. It also provided readers with current schedules of events coming up at LPHS. The staff of the Blue Gold managed to put out issues every full school week, even though they often had numerous other activities to worry about. For the sen- iors on the staff, the traditional senior feature issue closed out their careers both with the Blue Gold and as high school students. Blue Gold Staff. The 1983-1984 annual staff started their year of work by attending an Annual and Press Conven- tion at SDSU in Brookings on October 10, 1983. Skills such as doing layout design, writing copy and captions, and taking appropriate pictures were learned and used in preparing the 1984 Prestonian. Long hours were put in by each of the members in order to meet each of the deadlines. Of course, they were not always met. A yearbook is a book which records the school year as it passes. To the seniors it holds a special meaning. It's their last year as a part of the student body. To the rest of the classes it's just a beginning to the many wonderful memories that they will have. The annual staff has tried to record most or all of these memories for the students to look back at. This annual will provide a few laughs and memo- ries of all of the fun and crazy times of high school. 58 Vickie Mager writing a story for the annual. Its duties are to co- ordinate homecoming activities, the picnics in the park each spring and fall, and participate in organizing oth- er school activities. They raise money by sponsoring dances and a pop ma- chine is set up in the lunchroom for extra funds. The Council provided the student body with a new annual dance in 1984. The Lake Preston Annual Sadie Hawkins Dance was initiated March 16, 1984 by the student council and proved to be a success. Food Advisory Committee The Food Service Advisory Com- mittee is made up of representatives from each class in the junior high and high school, the cooks, and Mrs. Gottsleben serving as the advisor. High School And Community Get Together To Celebrate Homecoming 1983 was a week-long celebra- tion for the Divers. Every day of the week the students wore outlandish outfits and were in high spirits. Monday was Grub Day, which made Lake Preston High School students look pretty sloppy. Tuesday was Hat, Socks, and Sunglasses Day, and also Freshmen Initiation Day. The senior classmates decided that the freshmen would have to dress as babies. They had to wear diapers, white T-shirts and pony-tails. Crazy Day, on Wednesday, held all sorts of surprises. Audra Sass and Karen Nelson showed up in togas while Emil Larsen and Rick Holland came as one would expect to see Boy George of Culture Club. Thursday was Inside Out and Backward Day and Friday was Blue and Gold Day. The main events started taking place Thurs- day, September 29, with coronation. Karen Nel- son and Mike Tolzin were crowned Queen and King. Karen received an engraved bracelet and Mike the game football. Friday found the Divers in unusually good spirits as the picnic in the park began. It had been rainy all week but rain was nowhere to be seen on September 30, 1983. The community joined in the picnic. Afterwards, everyone marched uptown with the band and homecoming royalty leading the procession. There the com- munity and high school joined together for a pep-fest. During the pep-fest, winners of the poster contest were announced. The third graders won the elementary contest and the junior class won the high school contest. The evening festivities began with Homecom- ing game which ended 24-6 in Castlewoods favor. Rick Holland was the leading rusher, driving fifty-four yards on twenty-two carries. Mike Tol- zin was the leading tackier with fourteen tackles. Homecoming celebration came to an end with a disco at the school gymnasium. Highlights of the dance included a Mellow Yellow guzzling contest, a dance contest and a number of draw- ings to give away posters and records.
