It seems like yesterday when we rode a bus to Erwin every day for school. The highlight of our Erwin years was when we put on a Heritage Program. As sixth graders we also were celebrating the 200th birthday of our country. When we entered high school, everyone warned us about one thing: initi- ation! People had told us all year long that we were going to get it, but most of missed it. We had a choice of what classes we wanted to take, and became involved in many different activities such as FHA, FFA, sports, music, drama, art, and publications. The highlight of our high school days had to be our Junior Prom. It was probably the toughest year, but it really brought our class together. We raised money by selling concessions, having bakesales, and raffling off a tape player. The big time finally came! The event that we had planned for a year was finally here. “Sailing Under the Stars” made the work that we had done mean something special to each of us. In our Senior year, we realized that we were actually going to leave to make a career for ourselves. Advice was given by many as to what we should do, and most of us did decide to further our education in some way. As a class we wanted to leave something that people could remember our class by. With the funds we had left over from our Junior year we had a Girls’ Sports trophy case made. We will never forget all the good times we have had, particularly in our Senior year. Shadowing, going to Pierre, State B’s, and sports will stick out in our minds for the rest of our lives. Scott Tolzin We will never forget all of the opportunities that we received or all the great people that we met throughout high school. We can walk out the front doors of our school and be very proud to know that we ahve graduat- ed from a great place. As the years pass, nothing can take the place of the memories that were built here. Top left: Is he mature enough to graduate? Top center: Getting ready for the B’s! Because of the low number of class members, and the many participants in sports, most Ju- niors found themselves working many hours at concessions. Along with concessions, a bake sale was held to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom. Boy’s and Girl’s Staters chosen out of the Ju- nior Class were David Anderson, Tim Jensen, Terri Lundquist, Dawn Mikelson. Alternates were Paul Paterson, Connie Wienk, and Vickie Anderson. Planning and decorating for the Prom was the most difficult thing the Juniors faced all year, but when they worked together it became a fun and easy task that will always be remembered. 11 Sophomore Class Crystal Barcklay Michelle Bradwisch Jay Carlson Joanne Greenhaw Greg Hesby Dan Holm Jeff Iverson Cheri Janssen Darin Johnson Rick Longville. Moving up to the Sophomore level, the Class of ’84 was even more noticeable in the halls of LPHS this year. This was partly because the class grew in numbers also. Joanne Green- haw came from Minnesota last year, and Dan Holm returned from California at the beginning of this year. Darin Johnson arrived early in the year as well. No longer despised little freshmen, they began to take a larger part in the life of LPHS. The Sophomores were active in sports beginning right away in the fall. Cheri Janssen continued her inprovement in bas- ketball and was a varsity starter all season. Eight of the boys saw some football action. Greg Hesby started several games at quarterback until a broken arm ended his season prema- turely. Jeff, Dan and Rick played a lot in the line, while Mike and Paul at ends and Jay in the backfield were also key performers. 12 Lisa Malone Paul Mobley Karen Nelson Coralee Patch Audra Sass Mike Tolzin Brian Verhey Malinda Virchow Left: Homecoming attendants Mike Tolzin and Michelle Bradwisch. During the winter Jay, Paul, Greg, and Dan wrestled, while Mike, Jeff, and Rick played basketball. Cheri was a started on the volleyball team, and Lisa participated as well. During the spring season Jay, Dan and Paul were on the track team. As Sophomores the Class of’84 also took a greater role in FFA, FHA, band, chorus, cheerleading, Student Council, Blue Gold, and the musical. They proved that they have academic talent as well. Paul and Jay both participated in the James- town College and Northern State math contests. 13 Sheila Anderson Todd Brown Todd Carlson Christina Casper Sharri Casper Bonnie Ellingson Lee Hanson Carol Hesby Rick Holland Kim Jacobsen Juli Jensen Michelle Jensen The Class of 1985 moved one step closer to the end of their LPHS careers this year as they continued to be active in school activities while coping with high school classes. The girls continued to be a major factor in girls athletics, while Todd Carlson and Curt Vir- chow wrestled; Todd Brown, Todd Carlson, Rick Holland and Emil Larson played football; and Charlie Johnson played basket- ball. FFA, FHA, band, chorus, annual, Blue Gold, and dramatics also were areas of activity pursued by the Class of ’85. The rest of LPHS had better look out as we return next year as sophomores, determined to be the CLASS of LPHS. 14 Kristi Jibben Charlie .Johnson Julie Johnson Emil Larson Joann Larson Denise Tolzin Shelly Verhey Curt Virchow Not Pictured: Cindy Bradwisch Ranae Dement Carol Reiser Jennifer Rockino Charlene Smith Above left: This track business is sure exhausting. This year’s basketball squad showed more improve- ment from last year, and showed their experience as the year went on. Leading the Divers in scoring were Robin Marken, Jody Wienk and Cheri Janssen. Jody Wienk and Dian Menzel were selected to the All-Conference Team. The girls had many good times during the season which they will always remember like saying prayers in the locker room and countdowns before each game. A garter was awarded to a different player each day for improve- ment and hustle during games and in practice. Four seniors - Robin Marken, Dian Menzel, Dawnette Hovde, and Marily Ellingson - contributed much to the program during their high school careers, and have shared much of the joy of winning and the agony of defeat that makes sports memorable. The Divers season ended with a disappointing loss to a fired up Oldham squad in the district tournament at Arlington. 25 Gridders Learn Nine Man Game Football Squad: Back Row: Delwin Smith, Brad Hesby, Rick Longville, Jeff Iverson, Scott Tolzin, Craig Anderson, Loren Issac- son. Middle Row: Mike Tolzin, Jay Carlson, Dan Holm, Greg Hesby, Brian Verhey, Alan Fonder, Todd Brown. Front Row: Coach Brian Heupel, Todd Stevens, Rick Holland. Paul Mobely, David Anderson, Emil Larson, Todd Carlson, Coach Steve Thorn. 26 This years football players re- ceived alot of experience that will be beneficial in the upcoming years. The number of players be- came a problem towards the end of the season due to injuries. On the injured list were sophomore Greg Hesby, whose quarterback position was replaced by Todd Steven who came up from the backfield. Also, runningback Da- vid Anderson broke a finger in the Homecoming game and Scott Tol- zin received an injured knee in the later part of the season. Since six gridders are graduating this year the team may find it nec- essary to depend on incoming freshman to cut down on the shortness of man power. Top: Now what was the count on? Coach Monte Mason. Front row: Doug Brown, Todd Carlson, Curt Virchow, Todd Stevens, Jay Carlson, Greg Hesby. Right: Wrestling Cheerleaders Dawn Mi- kelson, Mary Jensen, Linda Jensen, Daw- nette Hovde. This year wrestling at LPHS lived up to its billing as an indi- vidual sport. In several dual meets the scores for matches actu- ally contested would have given the Divers a victory but forfeits in the upper weight classes resulted in a loss for the team. This does show that most of the wrestlers did have successful seasons individually; a result of hard training, dieting, and desire in- spired by Coach Steve Thorn and Assistant Coach Monte Ma- son. Two Diver grapplers qualified for the region tournament in Dell Rapids this year. David Anderson placed third in the 145 pound division, and Todd Stevens won the 112 pound division, quali- fying him for the state B tournament in Watertown. 28 Todd wrestled well throughout the tournament, losing only to eventual champion Wiley in the semi-finals. Todd came home with the third place medal to complete an out- standing season. Top left: Wrestlers can pile it pretty deep! Top right: State third-place finisher, Todd takes a break from the weights. Brad Hesby and Delwin Smith were the only seniors on the squad. Fresh- man Todd Carlson showed a great deal of improvement this season. Sophomores Jay Carlson, Grag Hesby, Paul Mobley and Dan Holm rounded out the varsity squad. 29 Veteran Gymnasts Show Skills Left: Marily demonstrates her skills on the balance beam. Right: Sheila pre- pares for her next move on the bars, as Coach Larsen spots for her. Although this was apparently the fi- nal year for the gymnastics program at LPHS, the experienced girls worked hard and performed well in- dividually. Seniors Marily Ellingson and Linda Jensen were once again strong performers on the balance beam. Linda put in a lot of work on the uneven parallel bars as well, while Marily competed in floor exer- cise. Freshman Sheila Anderson was the Divers top contender for all around honors, as she demonstrated exceptional athletic ability. Coach Ron Larsen’s squad was thinned by defections to volleyball as the end of the program looked imminent. Other gymnasts on the 1982 team were Junior Becky Hesby and seventh graders Robin Dement and Caryn Ellingson. One aspect of athletic competition that usually stays in the background until things go against us is the work of the officials. Although they are generally in the back- ground or on the fringes of these pictures as well, this page is dedicated to those who make equal athletic competition possible. Besides referees, umpires and linesmen in the striped shirts we also need clock and scoreboard operators, official scorers, timers, judges, starters and chain gangs to run things correctly. Thanks to all those who participated in those capacities during the 1981-82 year. 31 This years basketball squad was under the leadership of two new coaches, Jim Pruitt and Brian Heupel. After many hours spent conditioning the boys were able to handle almost any- thing except when it came to foul trouble. The season may have had more disap- pointing moments than rewarding but you could always be sure that they would be out there giving it their all and showing that they could work to- gether when things got tough. The team provided many exciting mo- ments for the fans, including the dis- tricts even though it ended in defeat. The team was led by two seniors, Craig Anderson and Scott Tolzin, and sophomore Mike Tolzin. Scott was also named to the Lake Central Con- ference all-star basketball team. L to R: Coach Richard Ritter, Jess Lewis, Darwin Smith, Charlie John- son, Rick Longville, Jeff Iverson, Paul Paterson, Mark Sjolie, Ron Longville, Mike Hesby. The B team, again coached by Richard Ritter, needed the help of four eighth graders to make a team. This made for some diffi- cult times, especially late in games when we were often down to five or six players. However, the young guys did get a chance to play ball against older, more experienced play- ers. This should be beneficial to them and to the future of Diver basketball. The team will al- ways remember a close game against a highly touted DeSmet team which was lost in the fourth quarter as the Divers had to finish the game with only three men on the court. 33 Varsity Volleyball Team: Front row: Kay Osvog, Kari Anderson, Juli Jensen, Carol Hesby, Bonnie Ellingson. Back row: Connie Wienk, Dawnette Hovde, Jody Wienk, Kim Jacobsen, Robin Marken, Holly Casper, Cheri Janssen, Coach Dan Ryan. Volleyballers Enjoy Outstanding Season In 1982 the first sanctioned state High School Volleyball Tournament was held, and Lake Preston was a strong contender to be in Brook- ings for it. Only an outstanding performance by an old nemesis, the DeSmet Bulldogs, stopped the Diver girls from their goal. Otherwise this was a very successful season for an experienced team and coach Dan Ryan. The girls won 23 games, representing the most outstanding re- cord in the history of girls athletics at Lake Preston High School. Throughout the season the Divers were led by Robin Marken, Connie Wienk, and Cheri Jans- sen, all of whom demonstrated good all-around play with good service statistics and good floor play. Holly Casper, Dawnette Hovde and Jody Wienk rounded out the starting lineup, and B Team Volleyball: Front row: Kari Anderson, Jan Sjolie, Rhonda Carlson, Kay Osvog, Terri Wienk, Jana Iverson. Back row: Michelle Jensen, Carol Hesby, Kristi Jibben, Juli Jensen, Denise Tolzin, Lisa Malone, Sharri Casper, Coach Bob Giebink. each made important contributions as balance was a strong point for the Divers. Bonnie Ell- ingson improved during the season, and was playing an important role on the team by sea- son’s end; so much so that she was named to the All-Region Tournament team. Bob Giebink’s b squad also performed well making the future of LPHS volleyball look bright. Although Robin, Holly and Dawnette will be gone, the performances of Junior High girls like Kari Anderson and Kay Osvog prom- ise more success down the road for the Divers. 35 Great Scott!! Once again the main story of LPHS track was Scott Tolzin’s assault on the record book, and his quest for a second state championship in the high hurdles. Throughout the season Scott defeated all challengers and several times was under 15 seconds, including a 14.85 clocking at Howard. Going into the region meet, Scott was the favorite, but a false start in the preliminaries there shattered the dream dream. Scott showed his class by coming back to win the 300 meter hurdles by an eyelash, and then finishing a winner by taking the state title in Sioux Falls. Sophomore Dan Holm worked on im- proving his shot put technique, while the rest of the team participated primarily in relays. The girls, with one junior, five freshmen, and an eighth grader worked on improving their performances. Bonnie Ell- ingson showed good potential in the 800 meter run. Denise Tolzin placed fourth in the long jump at the conference meet. Michelle Jensen worked hard and improved in the long jump. Kim Jacobsen was the squad’s top sprinter. Amy Wienk ran some good 400’s for an eighth grader. Terri Lund- quist and Jennifer Rockino ran on relay teams. Top left: Paul Mobley demonstrates the hard work necessary to be a trackster. The LPHS band and stage band were busy playing at many exciting, new events. At the beginning of the school year, the band traveled to Sioux Falls to complete in the Viking Day Parade. The song “Cumana” was memorized and played while marching. A traditional event, a band supper, was replaced by a new activ- ity called a Band-O-Rama. At this, many games were played such as: fishing pond, bingo, ring toss, bake sale, and a television raffle. On April 3 several students traveled to Watertown for the region- al contest. Superiors were earned by: Paul Mobley, alto sax; Carol Hesby, drums and bells; Dawn Mikelson, flute; clarinet quartet; flute quartet. Those receiving excellents were Jeff Iver- son, trumpet; clarinet duet; trumpet trio. In the Spring, a pit band was formed to provide music for the musical, “Bye Bye Birdie.” Also in the Spring, a Stage Band Dance was held on May 10. Two concerts were played through the year. A Christmas concert in December and a Spring Concert in April. 43 Harmonizin’ Back row left to right: Paul Mobley, David Anderson, Mark Sjolie, Greg Hesby, Tim Jensen, David Larson, Brad Hesby, Jeff Iverson, Rick Longville, Paul Paterson, Jay Carlson, Todd Carlson. On March 23, the chorus traveled to DeSmet and practiced with choirs from five other schools from 10 in the morning until 4:30 in the after- noon, in preparation for the 1982 Interlakes Choral Festival, which was held that night. The girls in the swing choir put their part into the festival by doing lyrics and motions to “Hey Big Spender!”. All-State Chorus was in Sioux Falls on the sixth and seventh of November. Attending from LPHS were Da- vid Anderson, Brad Hesby, Mary Jensen, and Linda Pastian. Alternates were Paul Mobley, Marily Ellison and Linda Jensen. Accompanists for chorus this year were Dawnette Hovde, Carol Hesby, and Dawn Mikelson. Dawnette also played for swing choir. 45 FHA This years FHA members participated in many projects such as a community soup supper, dice throw at the Halloween Party, Grandmothers tea and secret angels for Christmas. A program on mental retardation was presented to the FHA members by Miss Clary during one of the meetings. Installation of the new officers took place at the Banquet held on April 16. Although there were numerous problems in getting everything ready for the production, and no- body wants to rehearse when the weather gets nice out- side, the play did come off, and quite well at that. The director was Cathleen Brix, with Malinda Way-Johnson as chorus director. Margene Boer directed the pit orches- tra. As always, a dramatic production cannot be produced without support from people who do not appear on stage. Mr. Mason and his ag-shop class put in work constructing sets, Audra Sass and Dawnette Hovde were in charge of props, and Bob Giebink and John Walker handled the lights. Although this may have been more hectic than the production of most plays at LPHS, it will be an experience fondly remembered by many, especially for those who hadn’t previously been involved in plays. 49 Top left: Kim (Marily Ellingson) tells us “How lovely to be a woman!” Top right: Albert Peterson (David Anderson) sings to “Sad Girl” Connie VVienk. This gives stu- dents a chance to have input into the operation of the lunch pro- gram. One result is the class choice lunches throughout the year. 51 Blue And Gold Top: Blue and Gold Staff: Front row: Dawn Mi- kelson, Robin Marken, Tammy Sass, Kristi Soward, Adviser Robert Giebink. The Blue and Gold had a new adviser again this year in the person of Robert Giebink, and new editors as Robin Market and Tammy Sass coedited the paper this year. However the tradition of excellence was carried on as at the State High School Press Convention the Blue and Gold was awarded another All-State Newspaper cita- tion. This is the fourth consecutive year that the LPHS paper has been so honored. Working on the paper can be fun, and a relaxing way to spend seventh period. However, when deadlines must be met, someone has to get down to work and see that things get done. Despite occasional desperation on the part of Mr. Giebink and by Robin and Tammy, the Blue and Gold continued to be published, documenting the life, activities, and achievements of the Lake Preston High School population. Assistant editors Dawn Mikel- son and Kristi Soward worked along with the chiefs, and will be expected to take up where they left off in the fall. Putting Together The Prestonian The completion of the Prestonian for 1982 was a slow, difficult process but we hope it will remind you of the people, events and life around LPHS during 1982 for many years into the future. As usual, there were many people who said they were on the annual staff, but when it came to showing up to work, writing copy, making decisions and finishing work that had been start- ed only a few people came through. This normal annual staff problem was compounded by the fact that we went through three editors before the work was finished. Special thanks are due Terri Lundquist, who contributed more than the rest of the student body combined, and to Jane Schnell, who was our third editor and saw the work through to completion. Thanks to them, this book is now in your hands. 54 Opposite page: Top left: Terri Lundquist and Dawnette Hovde discuss a lay-out. Since homecoming occurred during SDEA week, our activities were cut from the usual five long days to two compact, exciting days. Monday we all participated in hat and sock day. The freshmen were seen with shoe boxes, and when any senior yelled “Flood” they had to drop everything and jump into their shoe boxes. Tuesday the fes- tivities continued with Crazy Day. The Freshmen had to dress up like flowers and were watered by the Seniors. Classes were let out at 11:45 for the picnic held in the park, which lasted until 2:00 when school was dismissed. Coronation followed the Girls Basket- ball victory over Arlington on Tuesday night, October 6. Dawnette Hovde was crowned Homecoming Queen and Loren Isaacson was crowned King. At- tendants were Holly Casper, Linda Jan- sen, Mary Jensen, Scott Tolzin, Brad Hesby, and Delwin Smith. After coronation Diver fans attended a pep fest at Diver Field and watched the burning of the “D”. The night ended with a snake dance around town, for anyone who wished to participate. The Homecoming game was Friday night, October 9th, against the Doland Wheelers. The Divers fell behind in the first half, and a second half rally led by the scrambling of Todd Stevens fell short. The traditional dance followed the game, with music provided by Silver Heart. 58 Top left: Freshman attendants Emil Larson and Michelle Jensen. Soup Supper And Band-A-Rama Two of the events which were held as fund-raisers this year were the FHA soup supper and the Band-a-Rama. The soup supper has become a traditional money-rais- ing event for the Lake Preston Future Homemakers chapter. The Band-a-Rama was a change from the band suppers which have been held in the past. It was more of a carnival style event, with games of chance and skill to profit the band and entertain those who attended. The drawing for the winner of the TV raffle was also held at the Band-a-Rama. Top left: The lunchroom was filled with people enjoying the soup supper. The evening of May 7 began with a banquet. Waiters and waitresses, dressed as fairies, served stuffed pork chops, corn, salads, bread and an ice cream desert. The program began with a welcome by Dawn Mikelson followed by a response given by Dave Jones. “Dream” and “Time of your Life” were sung by the Swing Choir, featuring soloists, Dave An- derson and Connie Wienk. The sen- ior class presented the ABC’s and the junior class read the prophecy’s. “Carriage” was the band which pro- vided music for the dance. Juniors decorated the auditorium with light blue, dark blue, silver and white streamers. A garden scene with flowers and a pool was the set for taking pictures. Through your four years of high school, Many memories you have shared. The smiles, laughs and feelings, With friends who really cared. The time comes now to move ahead, To new and better things. We wish you luck and happiness, To which the future brings. COLORS FLOWER Dark Blue, Light Blue, Gold Yellow Rose The Seventy-Eighth annual Commencement of Lake Preston High School was held at 4:30 in the afternoon on Sunday, May 16, 1982. The twenty eight seniors were together for perhaps the last time, celebrating getting “out of the Zoo in ’82.” Commencement speaker was Lieutenant Governor Lowell Hanson, who spoke on effectively running the race of life. Other speakers were Valedicto- rian Robin Marken and Salutatorian Marily Ellingson. Fortunate- ly the ceremony was fairly brief on that hot afternoon and the twenty eight inmates were soon released into the world. President ..... Vice President Secretary ..... Middle: Linda Pastian at Sioux Valley Hospital. Bottom: Holly Casper and Debbie Ellwein of Freeman at Gustafs. On November 3-4, 1981 the seniors had an opportunity to participate in a new program called shadowing. The purpose of it was to allow stu- dents to observe or work with people in careers which interested them. Conducted at locations throughout the Sioux Falls area, the program in- volved students from Lake Preston, Arlington, Centerville, Dell Rapids, Menno and Freeman. Among careers observed were nursing, cosmetology, police, mechanics, data processing and floristry. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to get first hand knowledge of what everyday work in various jobs is like. Some found they liked what they saw and others decided they weren’t interest- ed in a field after all, but either way it was an aspect of education that can’t be found in the classroom. 67 Outstanding Divers Top row: Three of the community scholarship win- ners were Jane Schnell, Marily Ellingson and Daw- nette Hovde.
