With a win-loss record of 3-6 1978 wasn't quite the Lake Central Conference championship year Coach Ron Larsen had hoped for although, their were many exciting moments. Led by returning allconference juniors Mark Jacobsen and Russ Williams, the Divers tried to maneuver down field offensively and stop opponents defensively. Riddled with several injuries such as starting QB Darin Gullickson, Bruce Johnson, Danny Severson, and Tim Casper, this was not an easy task. Though the Lake Preston Divers made up of mostly juniors, the senior squad put forth a valiant effort and contributed more than their fair share. Coach Larsen has dedicated next years season to this years seniors and plans to take the conference championship. Making all conference for the second year were Mark Jacobsen at offensive end, and Russ Williams at Middle linebacker. Senior Football Players: Rick Hillestad, Mark Hodges, Scott Janssen, Gary Pastian, Todd Casper. 26 im t UJ N Back Row - Dian Menzel, Jill Larson, Nila Hasche, Sherry Waldow, Connie Jensen, Robin Marken, Peg Wienk, Lori Jensen, Jacky Jensen, Front Row - Mgr This years varsity basketball team was under the new direction of Curt Lee, along with Linda Karbon. LPHS's girl BB team sustained many losses but Coach Lee has a solid nucleus for next years team. Defeating DeSmet on Parents Night was Shellie Marken, Asst. Coach Linda Karban, Coach Curt Lee, Mgr. Christine Penn. the high point of the season. Senior Nila Hasche secured the win with a free throw. At the end of the season all enjoyed a pizza party at Coach Karbons house where they learned that you don't put a hot pizza pan on a plastic tablecloth! 27 Girls Jr. Varsity-Back Row- Asst. Coach Curt Lee, Vicki Hill, Jody Wienk, Marily Ellingson, Robin Marken, Kandy Lakman, Tammy Sass, Doreen Holland, Coach Linda Karbon. Front Row- Donna Gutzmer, Linda Jensen, Dawnette Hovde, Dian Menzel, Sue Hanson. The Junior Varstiy Team under the direction of Linda Karbon prove to be an enthusiastic and rowdie team. Even though the young Divers had a tough schedule, they did their best never gave up ending their season with a win over James Valley. 28 Boys Basketball Chartkeepers- Dawnette Hovde, Theresa Johnson, Barb Ellingson. 29 Back Row - Mark Swenson, Jon Nelson, Mike Nelson, Bryon Jones, Rick Hillestad, Todd Waldow, Front Row - Mr. Dale Anderson, Dave Odden, Delwyn Smith, Ward Jensen, Lynn Jensen, Tim Stewert, Kurt Nelson, David Hillestad, Sanford Nelson, Manager. Injuries plagued the '78-'79 wrestling season causing a finishing record of only 2-8 for regular duel matches. For several matches, the team was forced to forfeit up to three weight classes. The team was young and inexperienced having just one senior, Kurt Nelson, for the full season. Rick Hillestad, a senior, was forced to quit because of injury. Mitch Alfson, also a senior, arrived in Lake Preston after half the grapplers' schedualed duals were over. The team showed great potential for the coming year through their tournament record, having missed second place in two tourneys by just a small margin. One senior and four juniors won the priviledge of going to the Region Tourney. They were L. Jensen, D. Odden, K. Nelson, T. Steward, and B. Jones. Bryon earned the honor to go to the State tourney by receiving fourth place at the Region, although he forfeited his last match because of injury. 30 The gymnastic team put in many hours of hard work this year, which was reflected by their season's record. Of the eight girls representing LPHS in the regional tournament six won the honor to advance to the state competition in Rapid City The girls who competed in the state level were Cherri Jannsen, Jody Wienk, Marily Ellingson, Linda Jensen, Donna Gutzmer, and Deb Carlson, Deb had a great showing capturing fourth place on the beam. The team as a whole found itself relying on the services of many younger and unexperienced team members, with only one senior member. Gymnastics at LPHS has a very optomistic look at the future. 32 Back Row- Donna Gutzmer, Marily Ellingson, Linda Jensen, Sheri Janssen, Deb Carlson, Coach Ron Larson. Front Row- Patsy Johnson, Mary Jensen, Mischelle Bradwisch, Jody Wienk, Vickie Rockino. fc®- ® ®- ® ® ® L to R - Asst. Since Jack Schultz became coach at LPHS the divers captured the LCC championship with a 6-0 record, this included beating the LCC king Hamlin County. Lake Preston hadn't won the LCC since 1960. The Divers also won the district 11 title by stopping DeSmet after beating Irquois and Oldham. The Divers, having beaten every team they played at last once, later became rated as high as tenth in the State. But the first round of region play proved heart breaking as the Hamlin Chargers slipped by the Divers in a touch game. Second round play brought a win over Elkton for third place- Leading the Divers were three senior captains, Bruce Jones, Gary Pastian, and Todd Casper. An All-state rating from the South Dakota High School Press Association topped the list of accomplishments for the 1978-79 Blue and Gold staff. In addition the staff won the Most Improved Newspaper certificate of recognition. The L.P.H.S. staff was headed by co-editors Cyndy Boyd and Suzanne Bredde, who put in long hours of hard work. Not to be overlooked was Jeanne Semrad, the advisor who worked hard along with the students. The 1978-79 Blue and Gold was one of the few school newspapers in the state to have a weekly publication. The weekly deadline sometimes seemed a bit impossible to comply with, but was always met. The staff was very supportive of the editors, and the advisor in producing the best paper possible each and every week.
