Bruce Paterson (left) and Sherry Waldow (right) gave their declam pieces at a theatre workshop later in the year. Bruce also did well in the humorous division at the regional declam competition. 37 Meet me in St. Louis, Louis The all school musical under the joint directorship of Mrs. Furney, Miss Wobig, Mrs. Marshall, Mr. Karli and Mrs. Bray took theatre goers back to the 1900's in Centerville, Mo. There, we were entertained by the Senior Class of 1904 as they worked toward their dream of attending the World's Fair in St. Louis as a graduation trip. The senior class sang and danced ragtime and as in all musicals, the young lovers had their conflicts but resolved them in time for a happy ending for everyone. 38 Jr-Sr Prom '78 The wildest fantasies of this year's senior class came true at the 1978 jr. sr. prom. The annual event, hosted by the junior class for the enjoyment of the seniors was a smashing success, as you can tell by looking at the accompanying pictures. Thank you to the juniors for a job well done. 40 Welcome to Fantasy Island 42 Blue and Gold Staff Blue and Gold Staff, back row left to right: Eddie Johnson, Dayle Johanson, Nancy Peterson, Sanford Nelson, Gabe Mydland, Kevin McClain, Third row: Advisor Ann Lundquist, Peggy Wienk, Doreen Holland, Karen Strieker, Donna Gutzmer, Lynn Jensen, Susan Gullickson, Shelly Hauck. The 1977-1978 Blue and Gold staff, headed by co- editors Christine and Andrea Penn, pictured at the right will be remembered for the fine papers that they thanklessly and regularly put together for the students and faculty of Lake Preston High School. If meeting the bi-weekly deadlines were not enough work in itself, it was the misfortune of the staff to lose the services of its advisor, Ann Lundquist at the end of the first semester. At that time Jeanne Semrad joined the staff of the school and brought to her position as Blue and Gold advisor many new and exciting ideas. 44 Prestonian ’78: Our work is never done Prestonian staff, back row, left to right: Suzanne Brekke, Peggy Wienk, Susan Gullickson, Jackie Jensen, Connie Jensen, Nila Hasche, Shelly Hauck, Kim Strieker, Dolly Jensen, LuAnn Tolzin, Lori Jensen, Kim Wienk, advisor Mark Marshall. Front row: Eddie Johnson, Jill Larson, Georgia Hill, assistant editor Julie Williams, editor Pam Osvog, assistant editor Lori Helland, Tammy Peterson. Work on a high school publication is difficult for a number of reasons. First of all there is the long hours that must be put in after school or during study hall, at any rate it is time spent when you would rather be doing something else. Then there is the problem of mastering the job skills that are re- quired to put a year book together. Another problem is working with a faculty advisor who may at best be dif- ficult to get along with. Finally you don't get to see the results of all that hard work until the following fall. All in all it is a thankless job. The 1978 staff would like to thank advisor Mark Marshall for coming through when the staff needed help, which was all too often. 45 Future Farmers of America back row left to right: Jesse Nelson, Darlene Menzel, Todd Waldow, Dan Severson, David Odden, Tim Casper. This year most of the experi- enced and talented players from last year's team had to be replaced by younger and less seasoned hands. The result was a team that showed signs of promise but failed to bring home a third consecutive Lake Central conferecne title. Second year coach Ron Larson tried on several occasions to rally his troops and spur them on to victory, but in the final analysis the only fruits of their efforts were the mem- ories of a lackluster season of four wins and five losses. The wins included a very satisfying victory over the ever strong DeSmet Bull- dogs. While the losses were marked by a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to defeat the Huron junior var- sity for a second time. 53 Junior Varsity football, back row left to right: manager Todd Waldow, Mike Nelson, John Kroger, Jesse Nelson, Jerry Lather, Roger Jones, Scott Tolzin, coach Bill Ellwanger. We play for keeps! Girls basketball, like the other newly initiated womens sports at Lake Preston is proving itself to be a worthy addition to the ever growing list of co- curricular activities. While the girls did not sport what could be called an outstanding win and loss rec- ord this year, the gains that they made were none the less substantial. The improvements and accomplish- ments that were achieved are not the kind that find their way into the record books, but they were noticed by nearly every instructor in the high school. The girls of today seem to have a greater sense of personal pride and hold a better self image. These are all things that can be developed through partici- pation in girls sports as well as in other extra curricular activities. Next year if we could just get them to improve that record . . . Shown are from left to right: Julie Williams, Dolly Jensen, Deb Carlson, Coach Larson, and Theresa Johnson. The Lake Preston High School gymnastics team ended its year on a successful note as they sent three girls to the state tournament held in Watertown. The squad, consist- ing of but 2 seniors was coached by second year mentor Ron Larson. Practice facilities proved to be something of a problem as on some evenings practice was held in the gym, appropriately enough and on some evenings the girls were forced to contend with make- shift arrangements in the furniture store. Highlights of the year would have to include Deb Carlson’s excellent third place finish at the state meet and the great times and laughs shared by all the girls. 58 The will to win Varsity wrestling back row left to right: Manager Sanford Nelson, Dwane Jones, Paul Nelson, Jack Nelson, Scott Jannson, Kevin Lather, Byron Jones, ront row: Scott Jensen, Jeff Stewart, Stan Steffenson, Mike Nelson, David Hillestad, Lynn Jensen. Lake Preston wrestling fans were blessed with a great deal of talent to watch this past year. The Diver matmen headed by three time state champion Stan Steffenson fielded the strongest team in the history of the sport at Lake Preston. Enroute to his third consecutive title Steffenson established an all time South Dakota win record with 98 straight victories. This fact was not over-looked by the college scouts who hounded Stan with scholarship offers. Pictured in counterclockwise order are the seven seniors who contributed so much to the Diver team: Stan Steffenson, Paul Johnson, Kevin Lather, Scott Jensen, Jack Nelson, Jeff Stewart and Duane Jones. 60 You win some, you lose some Boys Varsity Basketball team members included, front row left to right, managers Peggy Weink and Barb Ellingson, Tim Casper, Todd Casper, Russ Williams, Don Hovde, Bruce Johnson and managers Kim Weink and Nila Hasch. They began the season without the advantages of a senior oriented ball club. A factor that weighed heavily in many of the games that were to follow. The result was a disappointing season record of 4 wins against 15 losses. But high school bas- ketball is more than winning or losing games. It is learn- ing to work as a team, it is building character, it is de- veloping poise and confidence if one's abilities. It is in these areas that the Diver made real progress during the course of the year. Second year coach Mark Greguson is to be thanked for that and for giving next year's coach a head start on a conference winning ball club. The boys showed a lot of promise early in the season but were hampered by the unusually wet spring weather that forced them to do much of their train - _ ing in the gymnasium. None the less coach Don Brad- wisch was pleased with the performances of many of his young atheletes. The highlight of the year had to be the Joe Mendel Relays held at Doland. At that meet the Divers ran away with their first team title in a number of years. 64 Administration and Faculty Lane Karli Band Dan Ryan Principal Edith Neilson Secretary B.J.
