Thursday night after coronation, the cheerleaders led a pep rally at the new football field with the burning of the WL. Afterwards everyone joined in a water- melon feed. Friday afternoon school was dismissed for the Community Pep Fest on Main Street. The Student Council sponsored a skit contest. Judges awarded the Juniors 1st prize of $15 and the Seniors 2nd prize of $10. The teachers requested not to be in the competition. After winning the game 52-0 over Willow Lake, everyone was fired up for the dance. Two Dramatic One Acts 30 As a result of a blizzard, Tom has to spend the night at the Ames farm. Unaware of Emmy Lou or her Mama's insaneness, he agrees to re- pay them for his stay by shooting their sick, old dog, Herman. With a gun in hand, he walks right into a trap; instead of an old dog. Tom finds Emmy Lou's dead husband, Andrew. Lem Wheeler, the sheriff, is called in to investigate and arrest Tom for the murder. Lem discovers the dead body is far too frozen to have been shot this afternoon; leav- ing only Emmy Lou or her Mama to be guilty. Lem leaves, but promises to be back in the morning to pick up the ladies. He asks if they would be kind enough to save that last piece of apple pie for him. Mama decides since Emmy Lou has shot Andrew, it is only fair that she herself spice up Lem's pie a little with strychnine. Debbie Tolzin won Best Sup- porting Actress in her role of Mama, and Dean Nelson received Best Sup- porting Actor as Tom. The play won second in the local level. Mama.......... Emmy Lou .... Her husband, Robert Loisel, saved long months to buy a hunting rifle, but bought a beautiful dress instead. Mathilde loved the dress, but she had no jewels to wear with it. Mathilde went to Jeanne Forestier's house to borrow a necklace to wear with her rose colored gown. She wore the dress to a ministry party. After the party, it was discovered that the necklace was gone. Mathilde and Robert search for long months to find a replacement to return to Madame Forestier. At last they purchased one from Monsieur Blanchard at a very large amount of money. After ten long years of hard work to repay the debt left behind by the diamond necklace, Robert died of a heart attack. Mathilde then returned to Jeanne Forestier's house to tell her the whole story. Jeanne explains that the necklace she lent Mathilde was not diamonds, but only more sparkling glass, worth only a fraction of what Mathilde paid. Beth Kazmerzak received the Best Actress Award and Mark Odden was given the Best Actor Award. This play won 1st at the local level and traveled on to the Regional Play Contest at Watertown in January. DECLAM: FRONT ROW, L TO R: Andrea Penn, excellent; and Jill Johnson, excellent. Yankee Doodle” The stage was Erwin, the play was Yankee Doodle , and the audience loved it! Duke Norton was torn betv een a career of fame and fortune or a college degree at West Point. Duke's red, white, and blue followers all ruted him on to West Point, especially Mary Hurley, Duke's girlfriend. Audrey Stone and Carol insisted that Duke was a star and should follow them to Broadway. The end of the play sees Duke Norton announc- ing his plans to attend the Air Force Adademy at Colorado. The Grand Finale included the entire cast in an American salute of You're a Grand Old Flag. The audience was asked to stand and participate. DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was the setting for the 1976 Junior-Senior Prom. As the seniors walked in through a tunnel into the space rocket they noticed their names were brightly painted with flourescent paint. The ceiling was illuminated with flourescent stars. Several strob lights and black lights gave the Prom just the right effect. The dance started at 9:00 and lasted until 12;30. There was a good crowd and everyone seemed to have a good time. Music was provided by Desperado and following the dance at 1:30 there was a show. Coolie High was the show presented at the Lake Preston Theater. It’s a beginning of an end. . Thirty-six months had passed. The green freshman had become the graduating seniors. The hours of study, moments of success, and after school activities were all part of the past. The time had come to say good- bye to the good times and memories. Time has been spent discovering shorter routes to classes, location of the coldest water fountain, and how to skip a class. The information had been passed on to the Seniors of next year as part of heritage. In August, May had seemed a part of the distant future--a future that was a long time away. But now, May had come and along with it came their final farewells. Perhaps the hardest of these was to their friends. The 1976 Alumni of Lake Preston would never forget the memories they shared with classmates. Their graduation and farewells were not only for themselves, but for all those to follow. Renee Heads 1Q7S-7K YMt-hnnk Staff Toward New Horizons The active FHA'ers did many things to further finance the new football field. In November, they had a soup supper. The following month they spon- sored a bal e-sale-babysitting center, which led to another one in February. In March they had a Sadie Hawkins Dance, which ended the money-making project. Another project the FHA'ers spent much of the time with was working with small children between the ages of 2 and 8. A sledding party was held in January on the banks of Lake Preston. In March, a spring party took place in the park. Although the day was windy, both the young and old had fun. Lunch was served following a game of Cat and Mouse. The girls remembered their little brothers or sisters with cards and gifts on special holidays. The experience was meaningful for the FHA'ers. The State Convention was in Huron in October. The Regional was in Willow Lake in April. With the theme of A Child's Garden , the Parent- Daughter banquet was held in April. The years activities were brought to a close at the senior fare- well at the park. The senior farewell picnic. 50 Senior Members. Divers Complete an Historic 9-0 Season The LPHS Divers, in 1975, compiled a perfect 9-0 season; the most successful campaign in the history of the sport at LPHS. The Diver gridders captured the LCC football crown; the first time conference honors have EVER fallen to LPHS. The Divers also finished the season on top of the class B ratings, as one of only a trip of teams in the entire state managing to complete their season with an unblemished record. A devastating defense and an offense which jelled as the sea- son progressed were the keys to Diver success this season. The stingy Diver defense (judged by many as one of the tops in the state) shut out six opponents as well as giving up an average of less than three points per game. The LPHS offense was success- full in piling up nearly 30 points per game, making LPHS the team to beat. With the end of summer 1975 came the beginning of the second year of girl's basketball in LPHS. Day in and day out for three months the 23 girls in the program lived with a basketball and became accus- tomed to Coach Tom Haggar's whistle at the begin- ning and end of countless drills. Turned ankles, blisters, and bruises plagued many of the team members, but a winning 14-5 season made up for the discomforts suffered during the practices. Team members broke in a new coach as Ms. Linda Karban joined Mr. Tom Haggar in the big job of coaching game fundamentals to the new cagers. Between team parties, individual birthday parties, flower night, parent appreciation night, team meet- ings on game days, and long bus rides, the Diver girls became very close and learned to share each others triumphs and failures, both on and off the court. 61 Jr. Varsity Meets a New Challenge JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL: FRONT ROW, L TO R: Shelley Hauck, Susan Gullickson, Lori Helland, Laurie Jensen, Jacky Jensen, and Mary Schnell. The hard work and thought placed into the fundamentals paid off greatly as the season progressed. In the year, 1976, the Diver matmen had the best record yet achieved at LPHS. There were six dedicated seniors on the squad. They were Tom Birath, Randy Janssen, Randy Olson, Mayo Muser, Dwight Gutzmer, and Mark Koch. The season ended with Mayo Muser, Stan Steffensen, and Jeff Stewart going to the State Wrestling Match. Stan placed first in the 98 pound weight division. Thus ending a historic season at LPHS. New records, sun, hard work, and fun typli- fied the 1976 girls track program at LPHS. Coach Tom Haggar headed the team for the second year. Because of the strong junior high and high school girls out for track, the team placed well at their meets. Gayle Jones and Pam Osvog represented the DIVERS at the State Track Meet held in Rapid City in the long jump and the 440 yard dash. Renee Williams, the senior member of the track team, finished her sports involvement at LPHS with three track records, in the 110 180 yard hurdles, and 880 yard run. Bus rides to Howard, water fights and team parties, including the first annual rum-dum relays, kept the girls busy during the track season. Memories and friends were made for the members of the girls track squad in 1976. BOYS TRACK: FRONT ROW, L TO R; Don Hovde, Sanford Nelson, Stan Steffensen, Brian Tande, and Steve Jones. 2ND ROW; Tom Birath, Steve Iverson, Bruce Jones, Jeff Stewart, Loren Malone, and Jon Anderson. BACK ROW; Jeff Anderson, Dale Martin, Don Wilde, Steve Salter, Chuck Vedvei, Bob Bode, and Coach Jim Chesley. 72 The boy's track squad was small in numbers in 1976, but the Divers members worked hard for Coaches Jim Chesley and Jim Ruedbusch. Dale Martin ended his last season on the Lake Preston track team by representing the Blue and Gold at Rapid City in the triple jump and 220 yard dash. Loren Malone also earned the honor of traveling to the Hills and competing at the State level in the mile run. New records were set by the phenomial 440 and Medley relay teams. Both relays were composed of Brian Tande, John Anderson, Dale Martin and Loren Malone. Four seniors said good-bye to the LPHS sports programs in 1976. They were Tom Birath, Dale Martin, Mark Koch and Brian Tande. The Records Came Tumbling Down. Mr. Larry Furney Principal B. J. Gottsleben Superintendent Mr. Doug Nelson Counselor These teachers either knowingly or un- knowingly molded the lives of their students. Our exceptionly interesting teachers had the power to bring out hidden potential in their particular field which he taught. Teachers were ready with a helping hand for those students who had trouble with their studies. The fortitude of these teachers was remark- able, they withstood paper wads, gum chew- ing, talkative people, and the bells. Often their work went without thanks, but just one student who had through them gained a better outlook on life, was enough thanks for them. Each teacher in his own way sought to reach his students, to help these young people gain an insight on life. There always comes a time my friend. When we must say good-bye. Its never very easy. And I always ask why? You have done so much. To make this part of my life worthwhile. With just a touch of your hand. And your reassuring smile. You've always been around when I need you. And have never let me down. With end and every little task. You never even wore a frown. Remember on the day we met. How strange and frightened we were? Looking each other up and down. Afraid to make a stir. Now when I think back to that day, I wonder where all the time went. We had all the time in the world, then. Now every bit of its been spent. You've really became a cherished friend. One who will always know my hopes and fears. Someone to treasure down in my heart. Through all the passing years. Now will each go our seperate ways. And each do a different thing. Will find many new companions. And a tear each good-bye will bring. But, I'm confident we'll meet again. In another place and time. t To talk about our memories. And let our imaginations climb. We all feel sad down inside. With many a tear in our eyes. And our trying our hardest. To keep from starting to cry. Now there comes the time my friend. When we must say good-bye. It's getting harder every minute. And I'M still asking why? BY TAM STEVENS ) 1
