Tam Stevens rates in State. Through rain and fog, and even snow, the LPHS FHA girls did their thing. The money that was made this year through dances, bake sales, sock hops, bike-a-thons, etc... was used for the purchasing of a new electric scoreboard for the new football field. The night of January 18 was full of fun and excitement for everyone concerned with the FHA Snowball Dance. Charm Jensen and Ron Adams were chosen to reign over the event. The theme chosen for the dance was: Winter Fantasy. Since Tammy Stevens was selected as the Regional Chairman and State Treasurer tor 1974-75 year, the Region III convention was held in Erwin hosted by the Lake Preston Chapter. The first time the meeting was set up it got canceled because of snow. The second time of set-up some of the towne were unable to attend, but, as they say in show biz, the show must go on. They also say in show biz that they stole the whole show. That's exactly what the Lake Preston Chapter did! The LPHS girls won the dis- play contest and Mark Odden won the Regional Beef Cook- off. Almost every month there was a sock hop held in the gym. With the admission price of a quarter, every high school student could attend. Music was provided by various tape players of local students. In May many students were seen biking on their way to Erwin in the FHA Bike-a-thon. Those participating in the 20 mile ride went to people that they knew to get them to pledge money for every mile they rode. On the way there was the bad misfortune of a drenching rain. The ride was held up for about a half hour because of the rain. Some riders dedided not to wait any longer, so they left in the rain. Most of the 13 riders completed the ride, and they made over $300 to contribute to the fund towards the scoreboard. This year the FHA joined with the FFA to hold their annual banquets. Each organization presented their awards and at the end installed the new officers. Finally, with another successful year to back the Fu- ture Homemakers, they move onward to try to find new and better things to do for everyone. 9 FFA: First Row L to R; Mr. Tom Dagle-advisor, Shane Nelson-Sentinel, Mark Odden-Reporter, Reed Hauck- Treasurer, Bryan Sneesby-Secretary, David Holland-Vice President, and Gary Ellingson-President. Future Farmers of America = FFA Following the fad of raising money for the new football field, the FFA Chapter worked towards the construction of a concession stand. The FFA attended many judging meets this year. They also attended the State Convention in Breckings. After the coronation festivities and the burning of the H , the Future Farm- ers hosted a watermelon feed on the school parking lot. Again this year the FFA boys sold fruit at Christmas. This was their most important money making project, and everyone worked hard to make the money for the concession stand. This year the slave auction was held in the gym following the Athletic Ban- quet. Due to conflicts, they were told this was the time to have it. All of the boys sold for high prices, and everyone was SUPPOSED to do their work. For the concession stand the boys got a $400 grant from the government to help pay for the expenses. All went well this year, and high hopes for the next year will soon be ad- vancing on them with the coming year. The boys will go into the summer months trying to do the things that they learned to do in Dagel's future farming classes. 10 Peg’s Powerhouse Pep Club Prove to be No. 1 VOLLEYBALL: Front Row L to R; Renee Williams, Debbie Tolzin, Jean Jensen, Cindy Hougland, Cindy Hesby, LuAnn Tolzin, Kim Wienk, Brenda Nelson, Jill Johnson, Dawn Jones, Captain; and Beth Kazmerzak, Manager. Following the coronation, the rally proceded down to the football field for the Burning of the H . After numerous pep talks, cheers, and band songs everyone returned to the school yard to enjoy the watermelon feed. Then the cheer- leaders led the mob downtown for the annual snake dance. Friday saw no floats as the Student Council vetoed the idea for something new and different. Classes were held in the park with the teachers serving the picnic. At 1:00 a Community Pep Fest was held on Main Street with each class doing a skit. Approaching the end of the night the Divers de- feated the Howard Tigers by a score of 36-0. Then someone invented the wheel, and things really began to roll! Under the direction of Mildred Furney, Patricia Anderson, Jane Wendell, and Nancy Carmody, the Lake Preston play cast presented ROCK-N-ROLL. Having great musical talent in the school, it was decided to put on a musical, which was a great success. As the story opens, Johnny Saphire was the single attraction on the spot-lit stage. Backed up by the pit band, he sang the opening song to throw open the curtains and get the show on the road. Corndoggie tries to fortell the future and gets himself messed up. After getting a date with Betsy Lou, the campus queen, to the Prom, he has a dream of a car accident that was going to happen on the way home. Everything finally worked out after Darlene and Bumpers tell Betsy Lou that everything that Corndoggie dreams comes true sooner or later. After many unannounced love affairs, everyone gathers down at Pop's Pop Shop for the GRAND FINALE. The last song is sung by Da Wheels, the jocks, the rally girls, the twins, Mannfred, Duffy, Louise, and Bumpers . The refrain, sung by Betsy Lou and Corndoggie, brings a fantastic climax to the musical. Even though the weather was cool, palm trees stood in the LPHS gym on May .2 during the Junior- Senior banquet and prom. Tropical Dream had an atmosphere of palm trees, a grass hut, a treasure chest, and even a little sand scattered here and there. The evening started young with the banquet. The waiters and waitresses wore bright summer clothes and grass skirts. Tammy Stevens sang Friends ac- companied on guitar by Mrs. Jane Wendell. The Senior prophecy and the ABC's were read. Later during the Prom the student body danced to the sounds of Shadow Fax under the yellow and green streamers. Following The Longest Yard , shown at the Preston theater, the students ended their '75 Prom night and bid Aloha. 30 31 VARSITY FOOTBALL: Front Row L to R; Scott Teeters, Jerry Hill, and Ricky Olson as managers. Al- though Coach Tom Haggar was new to LPHS he alone, with the determined girls who participated in basketball drew huge cheering crowds to all their games. Being their first season the girls surprised many spectators by losing only one of their games. Having a winning team involved a lot of hard work and pulled muscles, which they soon discovered for themselves. Many nights were spent soaking in tubs of hot water and applying band aids to their blisters. The girls also learned that what might look like an easy shot from the stands is a lot harder to do one they are put in the same situation. After weeks of strunuous practice which consisted mainly of sprints, monsters, ball handling and scrimaging, the remaining seventeen girls began to feel the hard work, paying off. In spite of the hard work and tense moments, the girls enjoyed playing basketball this year and are looking forward to next season, which should consist of more opportunities to show their skills and abilities at the Districts, Regionals and State tournaments. Adverse weather conditions kept members of the Divers squad in their sweat suits and off of the track most of the season but enthusiasm remained high through out the cloud covered spring days of 1975. Visions of Coach Don Bradwisch in the new school car will be remembered by many of the tracksters who were carefully supervised on the highway south of Lake Preston, which was marked out for timings. Supervision included enforcement of the anti-hitchhiking rules and the encouragement from the be- hind the wheel coaches. The seniors wanted to change tradition. Instead of a speaker they wanted to share their memories of their last year of High School. They had a slide to show the good and bad times they went through to achieve their goals. CLASS MOTTO; Cherish Yesterday; Dream To- morrow; Live Today. CLASS FLOWER: Yellow and Orange Roses. They were involved in activities such as sports, band, chorus, the paper and annual staff, pep club, and plays. Also they sold con- cession at the Athletic events to earn money for the prom. The Juniors planned all year long for the Prom, which was held May 2, 1975. The theme for the Prom was A Tropical Dream. The evenings program consisted of a banquet, music by Shadow Fax, and the show follow- ing the dance which was the Longest Yard. Their advisors were Mr. Marlin Smart, Mrs. Ann Lundquist, and Mr. Doug Nelson. There were two classes required for the Juniors. They were English III and Ameri- can History. The other classes that they could take were Typing II, Algebra II, Econ Business Law, Home Ec. Ill, Shop, Ag, Physics, and German. Altogether they had a very successful year. Elective courses were Agriculture II, Geometry, German I and II, Shop I, Home Eco- nomics II, Typing I, and World History. The Class of 77 also participated in activities including athletics, band, chorus, and plays. Waiters chosen to serve at the 74-75 Junior- Senior banquet were Loren Malone, Steve Salter, Bob Bode, Steve Iverson, Chuck Vedvei, and Donnie Wilde. Now the freshman await the coming of their sophomore year, so then they aren't the youngest high school students. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learn; And many a fellow turns about When he might have won, had he stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow- You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the vicor's cup' And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out- The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems far; So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit- It's when things seem worse than you mustn't quit.
