Dedication We, the annual staff of 1973, dedicate this annual to the memory of Sharon Holm Johnson who holds a very special place in our hearts. Sharon was a beautiful person in spirit, mind, and heart; always friendly, good-natured, cooperative and willing to help others. As youth, we had much to learn from Sharon. Her eveready concern and interest for the younger generation led us to respect, trust, and admire her. Though she has gone, she left each of us with the incentive to live our lives to the fullest, set our goals to improve ourselves and give service to others. Sharon, who was a 1960 graduate of LPHS, will long be remembered for her community interest. She worked hard operating a beauty salon for several years. Yet, she found time to spend endless hours coaching the Lake Preston girls softball teams. Sharon’s untimely death occurred on August 21, 1972, at the age of 29, as a result of a car-train accident. She left her husband, Dennis, and her four children: Allen - 10, Crystal - 8, Danny - 7, and Tricia - 1. Sharon, you went first and we remain For the battles to be fought, Each thing you've touched along the way Will be a hallowed spot. We'll hear your voice, we'll see your smile, Though blindly we may grope, The memory of your helping hand Will buoy us on with hope. 1« ANNUAL STAFF: Carla Reiser, Assistant Editor; Karla Karban, Editor. The eagerness and ecstacy began to grow at the beginning of the week with everyone working on their floats. Coronation was again very beautiful. This year's attendants were: Freshman, Paul Casper and Joyce Smith; Sophomores, ReedHauck and Renee Steffensen; Juniors, Doug Sal- ter and Jean Vedvei; and Senior attendants were John Anderson, Jim John- son, Mike Olson, Becky Sass, Janelle Nelson, and Judy Jensen. After the crowning of Queen Debi and King Klark, the high school marching band led the people down to the park for the burning of the H . The cheerlead- ers led the chain of screaming, excited kids up to Main Street where they had a mass peo rally in the middle of the business section. The parade and the game were the activities of the next day. The winning floats were: Most Humorous, Sophomore; Most Original, Senior; and Most Beautiful, FHA. The themes of the floats were centered around commercials. Even though the Howard Tigers were victorious, the enthusiasm didn't die out at the dance following the game. Pandora's Box provided the music. Home- coming is made possible with the help of people. It really is a peoples world! Honoring the royalty, Mr. Mannes sang The Way You Look Tonight. It Was Only A Dream - “Rest Assured”, All School Play On the evening of April 12, LPHS presented Rest As- sured , a three-act play by Donald Payton. The play cen- tered around Mr. Morlock, a shrewd, coldhearted business- man whose only interest was money. Because he neglects his family and treats his employees roughly, Mr. Morlock discovered that his name was on Hell's waiting list. But wait! Mr. Morlock has been dreaming. The dream has done its job, bringing about a change in Mr. Morlock's attitude toward family, employees and life in general. For their parts in the play Guy Olson and Gail Swenson were chosen best actor and actress. Mike Kock and Hallie Svihel were chosen best supporting actor and actress respectively. The Future Homemakers of America again led a busy but fun year, full of activit- ies worth while for the entire school and community. This organization started off with a bang, when they initiated the freshmen as new members in September. A chapter mother's tea at the beginning of the year acquainted the new chapter mothers with FHA and their duties. October was the month for the annual State FHA Meetings at Huron. Lake Preston delegates who attended the meeting returned home with new ideas and greater understanding of FHA. Foreign exchange students who stayed at Old- ham were guest speakers at one of the meetings. They talked to the FHA'ers about their people's world in France and Philippines. Money making projects for the year in- cluded Daddy Date night and the FHA Carnival. The Snowball Dance, sponsored by the FHA, was a highlight of the year. The Ride provided the music for the exciting night of fun and dancing. Effie Falconer and Rick Osvog from the senior class, were crowned Snowball Queen and King. To add to the spirit of Christmas, the girls decor- ated the high school and brightened up the place a little. The beef cook-off was a highlight of FHA in the sophomore home-ec. classes. Each girl was asked to prepare five pounds of short ribs for the competition. The DeSmet chapter were visitors to one of the FHA meetings when Mrs. Harold Nelson gave the girls a demonstration on cake decorating. Indeed, the FHA Regional Meeting was one of the biggest events for the Lake Preston chapter. This meeting at Erwin on March 26 took much co-operation and work from the girls. The theme of the meeting was Love Comes In All Colors emphasing brotherhood. Being Chairman of Region 11, Renita Thomsen was in charge of this meeting and presided over it. The first week of April was a special week for the FHA'ers as they participated in a busy FHA week consisting of different activities each day. A combined activity towards the end of the year was the mother-daughter banquet and style show. The whole event was centered around the theme The Old Woman In the Shoe . The waiters, chosen by the girls, were dressed as little boys and girls. The installation of the new officers closed the exciting evening. Rounding up another year, the Lake Preston FHA'ers enjoyed a senior farewell picnic and party held in honor of the graduating senior FHA'ers. 22 Kracke, Tammy Jones, Hallie Svihel, Lynda Tulowetzke, Jayne Rossel, Debi Teneboe, Jean Vedvei, Kathy Smith, Debbie Hesby, Krislyn Jensen. To receive this title, Randy worked very hard on swine, cattle and crops projects at his father's farm. 1.972-73 was a very productive and active year for the LPHS Future Farmers of America under the guidance of Mr. Tom Dagel. Some of their activities included a slave auction in mid-winter, and citrus fruit sales. They were also involved in Pheasants Unlimited, which is a pro- ject to raise young pheasants and release them in the area. Their annual Parent-Son Banquet was held on May 11 where awards were presented and new officers installed. Judging played an important part in the FFA activities. Several mem- bers participated in land judging in Wessington Springs. LPHS was also represented in judging contests at the Dakota Winter Show in Huron, Little International at SDSU, Morrell's in Sioux Falls, Refield and De- Smet. They chose the theme Colour My World and put in many hours of work in preparation. On the evening of May 4th, eager students crossed under the rainbow to enter into a brightly-streamered time of fun and excitement. The banquet, beginning at 6:30, was attended by juniors, seniors, class mothers and their husbands, and LPHS fac- ulty and staff. Waiters and waitresses, chosen from the freshman and sophomore classes, wore costumes of six foreign countries. The turkey dinner was preceeded by a prayer by Kristin Iseminger. Full of spirit and pride, the Juniors sold concessions at many ath- letic events to raise funds for this pro- ject. It took a lot of co-operation a- mong the students, but most thought that a successful prom was well worth all the extra work. Mr. Lamberty, Mrs. Furney and Mr. Heimbuck, the class advisors, also helped out a lot through- out the year. Juniors were required to take courses in American history and English III. Elec- tive courses were Ag. Ill, Algebra II, Art I, chemistry, economics and busi- ness law, German I and II, Home-Ec. Ill, physical education, Shop I and II, shorthand and Typing II and business machines. In addition to these possible classes, a number of Juniors added to their activities by participating in band, chorus, and sports to make this a hectic but fun year. Marilene left Goiania, Brazil, where she was a part of a family of ten, to come to Lake Pres- ton where she joined a new and smaller family. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Svihel became her new parents and Hallie was her pew sister. Marilene's six month stay in Lake Preston, from January 6 to July 7, pro- ved to be a rewarding experience for her and to anyone who knew her well. Her pleasant smile and personality, and her optimistric outlook on life were an inspiration to the students of LPHS. Marilene fit into the Lake Preston community quite well. She spoke about Brazil at various activities including Civic Club, church activities, a Jaycees' meeting and the FHA Regional Meeting at Erwin. They Jaycees sponsored Marilene to Girls State at Mitchell. About Lake Preston, Marilene said, Be- fore I came here I wanted to live in a big city like New York. But now I love little towns because it is easier to get to know everybody better. If I had the choice now of living in Lake Preston or New York. I would live here. Most of the people I've met welcomed me into the United States and have been very friendly towards me. At first when I came here, I was very scared, but now I feel at home and part of the community. Marilene stated the main differences between the United States and Brazil as education methods, re- ligion practices, types of food and relationships between people. Then she added, But I have enjoyed learning all these things about the United States. She especially like the songs, Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road, The Last Song, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia and The Twelfth of Never. The foods she liked best here were ham, beef jerkies and Cinnamint gum. In conclusion of our interview with Marilene, she said, At times it has been very difficult for me to be so far away from my family and friends in Brazil, but my new friends and family in Lake Preston have helped me a lot. So I'd like to thank everybody who helped me during my stay in the United States, especially Svihels and my close friends. I will always remember everyone here and will really miss all of you. Maybe someday on my honeymoon, I'll return to Lake Preston and visit everybody again. Yes, it was great knowing Marilene Machado. She was very brave to come to our country where the people's world and ways of living are so much different. When she came here, she knew very little about the United States or the English language, but when she left she had gained experience, know- ledge, and learned to speak English quite fluently. She became a part of us and we grew to love and admire her. Although we will miss her greatly, we wish her all the luck in the world throughout her life! 73 trSBS Wt. m xmk Seniors Uncover And Pursue Future Goals H old to your dreams as the years unfold, Don't compromise the ideals that you hold, For on History's pages are written the deeds Of those who had courage to live by their creeds, Who held to their dreams and at last achieved The lofty goals in which they believed.
