As the student body flocked to the football field, the rust- ling and warmth of the burning D met the enthusiastic crowd. After many peppy speeches and yells the team was ready to face the challenge of the all-important game the next night against the DeSmet Bulldogs. Soon the students were hand in hand winding through the streets in an attempt to lose the end stragglers. The snake dance came to a halt on main street bringing this memorial night to a close. After a morning of rushing to put the finishing touches on the floats everyone gathered on main street for the parade at 1:30. The grade school children and floats carried out the theme of cars and insectisides. Evening brought the game with DeSmet; the final score 14 to 26. Following the grid-iron, the Nickel Bag of Soul provided the music for the dance. Thus the end came to the 1971-72 Homecoming. This was the year that was! Only this year it was a Sadie Hawkins Dance and the atmosphere consisted of a rollicking fun for all. Scarecrows, cows, sheep and hillbillies crowded the scene as the dance band, King Kong , got the music rolling. Kids were seen sprawled on the floor doing the alligator, twisting like mad during a twist contest and once in awhile shuffling from foot to foot during a slow dance. For the serious couples at the get-together, a Marryin' Sam booth was set up. Each couple received a set of pipe-cleaner wedding rings and a marriage license for suckers . Daisy Mae and Lil'Abner candidates were also elected from each class. Penny jugs were set on the office counter with the contes- tants names on them. The class with the most pennies won and was presented with the honor. This year the junior class won with Bruce Wolkow named Lil'Abner and Kathy Nelson named Daisy Mae. The man of the night received a pitch fork with a missing prong and the little lady was awarded a used washboard. The senior, sophomore and freshmen candidates were Pam Lundquist and Merrill Nelson, Ronda Stewart and Brian Shanks and Lori Hasche and Wayne Wienk respectively. This dance proved to be one of the most successful LPHS has seen. Cindy and Brian were voted twist champions of the night. Kathy and Bruce were crowned Daisy Mae and Lil'Abner. Stick 'em up! Scott and Margaret gettin' hitched. A Part Of The Old West Brought To Life Prom Night A western saloon set the mood for the annual Junior - Senior Prom held May 5. Highlights included a wagon wheel chandlier, an old fashioned piano and a very realistic bar. The entire front entrance had the appear- ance of an old western saloon, including the swinging doors. If anyone had gotten out of hand the sheriff was just outside leisurely rocking in his chair. The events of the evening began with the banquet where a hearty meal was served to the juniors, seniors, faculty, janitors and class parents. Music to keep the kids' heels clicking at the dance which followed was provided by Friends of Mine . For everyone who was willing to keep going the movie, Play Misty For Me , was shown at the theater. To finish the evening a breakfast was held at Susie's Cafe for the juniors, seniors and their dates. The night was a success filled with many memories which made this the year that was. This proved to be a very successful year for the student council having accomplished the goal of a lounge after years of compromises. One of their monthly duties was to choose a hard- working student as Student of the Month. Many hours were also devoted to revising the handbook. Consisting of several tables, couches, chairs and a pop machine for refreshments, the lounge provided an excel- lent place for the students to relax and converse. 3eclam Students Visit University in Vermillion Members of declam worked hard this past year to achieve high honors. They attended a workshop at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion on Octo- ber 23. The purpose was to meet with professors and receive suggested im- provements on each selection. These selections were then presented on Octo- ber 26 at the declam contest in Arling- ton. Mary Bode Mrs. Price........................Pam Lundquist Jimmy Knox................................Terry Aalbers Jimmy Knox wants to go out for the football team, but Jimmy's father, a local minister, stubbornly refuses his permission. He won't give his real reason, that his wife seemingly has a heart condition. Jimmy decides that if he can't go out for the football team, there isn't much reason for his going to school. George Wells, a friendly policeman, persuades him to return to Ms classes, where he hands in a forged excuse. As soon as his teacher realizes this she takes it straight to Jimmy's parents. When Jimmy comes home, the old argument is vigorously re- newed. Soon, Mrs. Knox is complaining of her heart; Dr. Knox insists on calling in a physician; and Jimmy storms out of the house and drives recklessly away in the family car. It is then that the minister discovers that his wife has been pretending her heart condition, as an excuse to keep her son close to her at home. The revelation comes too late to save Jimmy. Angry and des- pairing, he has blindly driven the car into an intersection, striking down a pedestrian and severely injuring him. Panic- stricken, Jim runs away from the scene of the accident. In the morning, he must go into Juvenile Court - there to prove him- self a mere boy ... or a man. Behold an Empty Room and Proof of a Man, two serious one-act plays, were presented in the Erwin gym on January 12. Proof of a Man was chosen to represent Lake Preston at the district contest in Huron, January 22. Due to bad weather they were unable to attend. FHA’ers Pursue Wide Range Of Activities The Future Homemakers of America have seen another year filled with good deeds and fun times within the community. Among their activities was a field trip to Sioux Falls where they toured Morrel's Packing Plant, Stewarts School of Hair Styling and the Crippled Children's Home. For the younger generation the FHA girls had a Little Brother Night. They each brought a little boy to the meeting to play games and eat lunch. One of the money raising projects of the year was Daddy Date Night. Each girl pre- pared a box of goodies and invited her daddy along. The boxes were then auctioned off to the men. A Foreign Foods Supper was also sponsored by the FHA. Various types of foods from foreign countries were served. FHA's yearly dance was a Sadie Hawkins Dance this year. Everyone came dressed hillbilly style and whoever dared were married by Marryin1 Sam. Two highlights at the end of the year were the Mother Daughter Banquet and Secret Grand- mother's Tea. The banquet was centered around the theme The Wizard of Oz. Reverend John Tanner gave an inspiring speech on love and preparation for marriage. New officers for the coming year were installed to close the banquet. The Secret Grandmother's Tea was held to reveal the identities of the Secret Granddaughters who had been corresponding with elderly ladies throughout the year. To finish off the fun-filled year a Senior Farewell Party was held to wish the graduating seniors good luck and best wishes. For the FHA, this was certainly a year that was. Renita Thomsen was elected State Vice-President of Public Relations and chairman of Region II. 24 A tasty meal being served at Mother Daughter Banquet, The scarecrow waiters for the Mother Daughter Banquet. Money raising activities included selling citrus fruit and garden seeds for Pheasants Unlimited. Other highlights of the year were the state convention and state judging contests which the Lake Preston chapter attended. To complete their year of fun and work the FFA sponsored a Parent-Son Banquet in April. FFA boys from various schools participated in a meat judging contest at Lake Preston sponsored by Buch Koch. School Musical - “Half - A - Sixpence” On the nights of April 29 and May 1 at 7:30 in the Erwin auditorium the Lake Preston High School presented the musical play Half-a-Sixpence. The setting was Folkstone, England during the 1900’s. The play was about a poor shop assistant, Authur Kipps, who pledges half a sixpence, a token of love, to Ann Pomick, a maid for the rich and hypocritical Mrs. Botting. An actor playwrite includes Arthur's name in a play and he gains a fortune over night. High society learns of Arthur's success and attempts are made to turn him into a proper gentleman. Arthur allows himself to become infatuated with Helen Walsing- ham, a wealthy and attractive young woman of high society. Ann causes a terrible scene at one of the social affairs and becomes very hurt when she discovers that he has become engaged to Helen. Arthur then realizes that he has loved Ann all along and begs her for forgiveness. Soon after, Arthur and Ann are married. Helen's brother takes off with Arthur's fortune, but the newlyweds find they are much happier living a life where money is not all that important. 'Tis today you must endow With all that's true and noble, And the time for this is . . . now! CARY ZEECK A Closer Look At The Seniors of LPHS Seniors gain experience in court.
