The 1970 Prestonian Lake Preston High School Lake Preston, South Dakota Walk through the door and into the hall With Rob and Curt, who are most trusted of all, To show you the fun all the students create. The bell just rang so don't be late! First, the faculty who try to adjust To the classes they have, that shine with trust. Onward we march to the activities this year Winding it up with a future that's clear. For the class of '70 will leave some day 'Cause graduation's the 27th of May. 2 Dedication The annual staff of 1970, wishes to dedicate their yearbook, the Prestonian, to Mr. Stephen McBride. Mr. McBride has been the English and art instruc- tor at LPHS for the past year. He is also coach for Declam, freshman class advisor, director of the All-School and One-Act Plays and advisor to the Blue and Gold. Aside from his regular duties, he has displayed his artistic ability, interests and enthusiasm toward many other school activities. He helped with art work for the FHA Spring Style Show, the 1970 Prestonian, and the Junior-Senior Prom. The annual staff hopes this dedication may in some small way help repay him for the service he has cheerfully and generously given. Editors of the yearbook present dedication of the Prestonian at Class Night to Mr. Steve McBride. In his second year at LPHS Mr. Gerald Andrews was kept busy with his duties as superintendent. He was active interviewing prospective new teachers, attending school board meetings, lining up buses for school activities and was available whenever needed. Assisting him in any way she could was his secretary, Mrs. Florence Olson. Florence has been a secretary at LPI1S for fourteen years. Guidance Counselor Administrators Strive For Successful Year Mr. Harstad, junior high and high school principal, was busy this year in keeping attendance records up to date, writing per- manent records and coordinating the cur- riculum. He also was supervisor and was in charge of discipline as the student body well knows. Board Of Education The man behind the junior concessions this year was none other than Mr. Garry Papke, Counselor at LP11S. Along with helping the junior class he is also advisor for the Stu- dent Council and the National Honor Society, The second semester he taught psychology. Board of Education: Mrs. Wendell Nelson, Chairman, Mr. Glen Green, Co-chairman, Mrs. Fred Gilberry, Mrs. James Kopperud, Mr. Arlyn Jensen, Mr. Lloyd Williams and Mr. Verle Pike. 4 Algebra I and II, geometry and trigonometry are taught by Mrs. Charlene Fersdahl. In her spare time she advises the junior class and the pep club. New Faculty Tries Alright, everybody quiet is a familiar line heard from Charles Strasburg the head librar- ian in LPHS. He teaches government and En- glish I and is advisor to the freshman class. Also included in his schedule is advising de- bate, declam, jr. high track and basketball. Guess who has been diligently teaching English to the sophomores, juniors and seniors at LPHS this past year? You guessed it, Mr. Stephen McBride who was also the freshman advisor. He was also busy teaching art and coaching declam. Along with the all school play and the one act play, the Blue and Gold was guided by him. To Adjust To LPHS Mrs. Vivian Rearick, commonly known as MOM”, spent her first year at LPHS teaching Home Ec. I, II, III and General Science. To keep her year in a wild frenzy she was advisor to the senior class, FHA, Pep Club and cheerleaders. Chemistry, physics, and biology were taught by two bachelors this year, (one wasn't enough) Mr. Larsen had the first semester, then Mr. Fumey took over the second semester. They also advised the senior class. The students did more with their voices last year than just talking, when Mrs. Judy DeGraaff came and taught elementary and high school music. For the enjoyment of the whole town she supervised the Christ- mas Program and a spring and fall concert. Mr. Larson is presently serving his country. Bingo, anyone?” This year's toot-toot section of LPHS was under the direction of Mr. Gene Holter, the instrumental music teacher. Besides working with the pep band, Mr. Holter was kept very busy during the year with A-band, B-band, stage band and advising the sophomore class. Some of the highlights of his year were the pops concert, ensemble and solo contest and the combined concert. 6 Agriculture I, II, III, and General Math are taught by Mr. Gary Gudahl this year. He also is advisor to the senior class and FFA. Say, by the way, did you hear the joke about. . .??????? Move it, move it, move it! could be heard sounding through the gym as Mr. Henry Len- ards watched over his high school girls and boys physical education classes. When not busy with athletics he taught U. S. history. Being the advisor for the junior class they always found some way to keep him busy. Basketball, track and girls athletic program were his extracur- ricular responsibilities. 7 Don't let the smile fool you, Mr. Keith Jandahl in his first year at LPHS, wasn't always in such a jolly mood when he taught typing I and II, economics and bookkeeping. He was also busy during the year trying to bring the B basket- ball squad on to victory. The annual staff and sophomore class were lucky to have him as a helpful advisor. Ambling through the halls of LPHS this year was another new member of the faculty, Mr. Paul Dobbs. Occupying most of his time dur- ing the year was his job as head football and wrestling coach and assistant track coach. Filling in the rest of the year he taught grade and high school physical education classes and general business. He was also advisor to the sophomore class. Junior High Faculty Eat 'um up, Chew 'um up! The junior high is taught by Mr. Larry Lueth in the Social Science courses, Mrs. Opal Guse in Science, and Mrs. Selma Hanson in Math. Each teacher is responsible for home room English, spelling and art. Working hard every day to fill the tum-tums of all the good little LPHS students were Mrs. Diana Dierks, Mrs. LaVonne Thomsen and Mrs. Helen Joints on, the best cooks a school could ever have. Wanna Drag? Early every morning the buses of LPHS could be seen slowly crawling out of hibernation to pick up the country kids for school. Kenneth Anderson, M. R. Munson, Rev. Richard Stierlen and Martin Neu had the job of bringing all the screaming kids back in for an education and taking them home again. These men also drove the buses for out of town school activities. They Cared For Us! The halls and floors of LPHS were kept shining all year with the help of Carl Swanson, Mae Thompson, Rose Adams and Conrad Elvik. Whenever any of the students would call for help one of them would always come with any assistance they could give. 8 CLASSES JANEL BAUMBERGER Nell JEAN BERGAN Joker” SUSAN BODE Suer Bod BONNIE BRANDNER Old Faitliful” SHERRY BROWN Sher DOUGLAS CECIL Joe Namath LARRY GARDNER Snake JOHN HANSON Professor GREGORY HAUCK Curly” STEVEN JOHNSON S. Kill the Car Students Prepare Most Humorous--FFA After working on floats all week, the students gathered at the gym Thursday night (Oct. 2) for the crowning of the king and queen. After Curt and Roben had been crowned and a short pep fest held, everyone went down to the park for the bon fire and kill-the-car. The excite- ment continued with everyone jerking each others arms off in the snake dance. Early the next morning the students returned to the school to put the finishing touches on their floats before the parade. The band, roy- alty, grade school and the floats assembled at 1:00 ready for the parade to begin. Afterwards everyone went home to get ready for the big game with De Smet that night. Even though De Smet was victorious the kids were still in a good mood and went to the Home- coming dance at the gym. Thus bringing the close to another LPHS Homecoming.
