Steve Olson Tom Jones written by David Rogers was this year's all school play. This play is a condensation of the novel Tom Jones. The scene is England and the first character to enter is Partridge, the teacher-barber-surgeon accused of father- ing the foundling Jones. Partridge introduces the characters, narrated odd bits of the tale, and steps in and out of the action. The play consists of three acts. The first act tells about the discovery of the child Tom Jones, his growth into manhood under the protection of the rich landowner Squire Allworthy, and his companionship with the Squire's mean-minded son Blifil. Tom also rescues Sophia Western from a runaway horse and immedi- ately they fall in love. Tom is banished from the estate by the Squire because of Blifil's lies about him. Mr. Western is trying to force his daughter to marry Blifil, whom she detests. The second act could be called The Chase - everybody who met in the first act chases everybody else to London. Unaware of each other’s presence, they all arrive for the night at Upton Inn. The inn becomes overrun with people - Tom dining with the loosely moraled Mrs. Waters; Sophia and her maid running away from her father and Blifil; a wife running away from her jealous husband; that same husband and Mr. Western in pursuit of Sophia. The third act is further complicated by the presence of Lady Bellaston. Tom encounters a raving Irishman and is nearly hanged for murder. Tom's trial exposes Blifil s duplicity and Tom's own good birth. The play ends happily with Blifil being banished from the country and Tom mar- rying Sophia. 48 Mardi Gras prom features Al Douglas Trio A sparkling chandelier, a dazzling coach, and rows of balloons highlighted the decorations of the Junior-Senior Prom of May 3, 1969. The program following the banquet began with a welcome by John Hanson, junior class president. The senior class president, Blaine Miller, fol- lowed with the response. Jo Dowden read the sen- ior's ABC's, and Marie Anderson gave the senior prophecy. Musical selections were presented by the Al Douglas Trio Plus One featuring Cherie Moore. This band also played for the dance which started at 9:00 and lasted until 12:00. Tom Nel- son and Debbie Hasche served punch during this time. The show A Lovely Way to Die was next followed by a breakfast for the seniors, juniors, and their dates at the Preston Cafe. In the early morning hours the junior class tore down the re- mains of the enjoyable Mardi Gras. 49 The Future Farmers of America decorated a float around the show Moby Dick. It was distinguished as being the most ori- ginal . The most beautiful award was given to the National Honor Society float. Their float portrayed the theme Tiptoe Through the Tulips. Susan and Darin Gullickson rode on the float. Students construct floats The beautifully decorated floats were the main attraction of the Blue and Gold Day parade. Each school organization and class work on a float. The floats were transformed into magnificent masterpieces with the hard work of the student body. Three floats were chosen for the awards of Most Beautiful, Most Original, and Most Humor- ous. The parade theme of 1968 was Movies.
