Kenneth Olson, the custodian who manages the auditorium, keeps the building in spic and span order during the school months• Drivers Our bus drivers for the year were Kenneth Olson, George Jen- sen, Otto Hasche, and Johnnie Williams, later replaced by Jewell Adams. Their job was to get students to and from var- ious school activities. Cooks Bertha Ryland, Mrs. Hamlot, and Mrs. Olson were our cooks for the year. The high-stepping marching band appeared in three local homecoming parade, the band also marched in in our list of homecoming appearances was the Hobo Day our fall marching appearances. The Pops Concert was April the band traveled to the State College where Contest. They obtained an excellent rating. Conclud- marching appearance in the Memorial Day Parade. Christmas Program. They sang The Star , Gloria! Sing Gloria! , and A Joyous Christmas Song . With the coming of the Region III Music Contest in April, they traveled to Brookings. They received an excellent rating with the singing of He's Goin' Away and Jesu, Priceless Trea- sure . For the spring concert they sang the two contest songs and There is a Balm in Gilead and Pioneer's Prayer . In April, they partici- pated in the Region III Music Contest and sang Were You There and Nocturne . They received an excellent rating. Lake Preston brought home thifteen Superior ratings at the Region III Solo and Small Group Ensemble Contest which was held in Brook- ings. They also brought home eight Excellent ratings, and one Good rating. Those receiving Superior ratings were-Marjorie Johnson, DeAnna Cleveland, Treava Danielson, Delaine Abel, Virgil Andersen, and Robert Larson for voice solos. Future Homemakers This year the F.H.A. has been very active. Every Wed- nesday night after school, coffee was served to the teachers by two F.H.A. girls. In November, we had a Daddy Date Night Basket Social. Our F.H.A. Chapter hosted Arlington at our Round Robin Meeting in February. Mrs. George Larson gave a demonstration on flowers and centerpieces. We traveled to Volga and were the guests for their Round Robin Meeting. F.H.A. week was held during the week of April 9-14. We set up a display in Bonde's store. Wednesday was Teachers Appreciation Day and each teacher was given a red rose. On Friday we presented an assembly program entitled American Heritage. Friday evening our annual Mother-Daughter Ban- quet was held. In an Old Dutch Garden was our theme, with Mrs. Dale Anderson as our guest speaker. Future Farmers The F.F.A. was very active this year, and received much recognition for their participation in various activities throughout the year. In the fall of 1960 the F.F.A. held it's annual Father- Son Banquet with a large number in attendance. The candi- dates for F.F.A. Sweetheart were Cheryl Baumberger, Carolyn Nelson, Marjorie Johnson, and Susan Larson. Carolyn Nelson was selected, and received a necklace and compact with the F.F.A. insignia on them. Clair Koch and Charles Stormo were chosen honorary chapter farmers, and each was presented with bronze plaques. Also at the banquet, a representative of PV elevators awarded the F.F.A. chapter with a cash gift for placing second in the state clean grain project. The main speaker for the banquet was Roger Peterson, the State Farmer from DeSmet. The topic of his speech was Lead- ership in Agriculture, which held the attention of everyone. Four of the F.F.A. members received high honors at the State Judging Contest which was held on April. Dennis Ryland was awarded an excellent for judging meats. As a team, Don- ald Eykamp and Kenneth Stewart won honorable mention for the judging of mechanics. Robert Johnson received first place in the State DeKalb seed corn contest. The National F.F.A. Convention was held in Kansas City, Missouri during the month of October. Roger Carlson, Bob Johnson, Dennis Ryland, and Mr. Stormo attended this event which was the highlight of the 1960-61 F.F.A. year. Homecoming The Homecoming Festivities commenced Thursday evening, September 22, with a pep fest and coronation at the high school gymnasium. Marjorie Smith was crowned Homecoming Queen by Kay Stubkjaer, Student Body President. Gary Koch was crowned Homecoming Marshall by Ted Goetschius. The Oueen's attendents were Janice Nelson, Joyce Albert, Cheryl Baumberger, and Treava Danielson. The King's attendents were Ralph Kjellson, John Dean, Bruce Koch, and Wesley Madsen. Following the coronation ceremonies, students held a pep fest around a huge bonfire in the city park. A snake dance through the business dis- trict and a theater party climaxed the evening. To open Homecoming Day on Friday afternoon, September 23, a parade was presented by the Lake Preston High School and Grade School. The DeSmet School Band also marched on our colorful homecominq parade. The parade had a large variety of floats, from which the music float placed first in originality. The most beautiful float was the National Honor Society float, and the F.F.A. float received first in the humorous division. Volga, our opponent in the homecoming game this year, beat us by one point. The Divers were defeated 32-0 and this was the way the 1961 season went. The Divers just lacked something although they fought hard for every point they made and struggled hard against the opponent. They were unable to bring home any victories. Our Homecoming game October 26, was played with Volga and turned out to be the most exciting game of the season. The Divers began the season without a single player from last year's team and they closed out the season with a 10-12 over-all record. The Conference Tournment held on the 18,19, and 20 of January took place in Lake Preston, Oldham, and Erwin ending in Lake Preston. Arlington took the conference championship with DeSmet taking second place. Lake Preston was defeated by Arlington in the semi-finals with a score of 53-47. In the first round game of the District 11 Tournament the Divers were able to overcome a 10 point deficit at half-time to defeat the Elkton Elks 47-40. Lake Preston finished fourth in the district. The lead- ing point getters for the 1961 season were: Ronald Shaw with 14.1, Wesley Madsen with 9.6, Gary Koch with 9.6, Donald Hookie with 7.8, Ted Goetschius with 4.4, Bruce Koch with 4, and Leon Kjellson with 3.3. The Divers 1961 track season began on April 14, with an Invitiational track meet at Lake Preston. The Divers placed second in this meet.Lake Preston traveled to Brookings on April 26, to attend the Dakota-Minnesota Conference track meet. The Divers did well in this track meet. They attended the East Central Conference track meet held at Brook- ings on May 2. The Divers placed fifth in this meet. The Regional track meet was held in Water- town on May 13. Leon Kjellson won first place in the half-mile run qualifying him for the State track meet. Kenny Olson also qualified for the State track meet by tying for third place in the high jump. Kenny Olson,freshman trackster, broke the Freshman Conference high jump record and the Freshman School Record with a jump of 5 2 . The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was held May 5, in the high school auditorium. The audi- torium was decorated according to the theme Candyland using green, yellow, pink, and red. Rows of crisscrossed crepe paper bordered the dance floor. The ceiling was made of twisted streamers with candy canes and various colored lights attached throughout. The decorations were highlighted by a candy house and cotton candy trees placed in corners of the dance floor. Punch was served from a soda fountain stand. Tommy and Darrel supplied the music. The banquet tables were decorated with candy houses and miniature castle nutcups. The waiters and waitresses wore white chef caps and colored aprons with the theme printed in black letters. The speaker for the banquet was Mrs. Aman. Dorene Tenneboe, junior class president gave the welcome with the senior class presi- dent, Treava Danielson, giving the response. Nancy Bergan favored us with a vocal solo and the Upbeats played a number of selections. The class prophecy was read by Helmer Torgerson, the class will by Kay Stubkjaer, and the class A, B, C's by DeAnna Cleveland. SKIP DAY On May 12, thirty two effervescent seniors, Mr. Boyei; and Mr. Stormo departed for Lake Okoboji at 6:00 in the morning. Their only stop was at Rock Rapids, Iowa, for mid- morning lunch. Upon their arrival at Lake Okoboji, they enjoyed a picnic dinner at the park. The afternoon was spent roller 3kating, golfinq, peddlinq water bicycles, bouncing on trampolines, and riding in motor boats. The amusement park was kept busy the entire day as the seniors had the thrill of riding on the roller coaster and Wild Mouse . At 4:30 they departed from Lake Okoboji for Sioux Falls. Thirty two tired and dirty seniors then freshened up at the YMCA and the YWCA. A delicious supper at Giovannis was the high- light of the evening. For entertainment that evening they attended a movie at the State Theatre. They returned to Lake Preston at 1:30 after a very enjoyable senior skip day. On Wednesday, May 24, the annual High School picnic was held at Lake Kampeska. Various activities took place during the afternoon including bowling at the Plateau in Watertown. We had a late lunch in the Watertown City Park and returned home at 5 o'clock p.m. GRADUATIONS Thursday evening. May twenty-fifth, thirty three excited seniors marched down the aisle which was lit by candles of the juniors. They wore blue robes and white caps, accented by gold tassels.
