The Lord has, however, sent for him. And while we feel sorely bereaved to lose him from our midst and his going is a great bereavement, yet his life has been a blessing which shall continue with us. 18 The Biology Class studied plants and animal classi- fication. They disected frogs, fish, grasshoppers, clams and worms. Many of them had science projects and the science room abounded with mice, hamsters, geese, snakes, turtles, and rabbits. The students made elaborate charts of animals and drew many pretty pictures of plant and animal life. The General Science students studied everything from the eye, to plants, to the planets, to atomic energy. These students went into a little bit of everything in the scientific world, but didn't get into the real complicated things. They got a good basic science background and worked hard performing extra experi- ments to make the course more interesting and profitable. If students smelled queer odors in the afternoons they could usually trace the smell to the chemistry room. The chemistry class kept busy with a work- book. experiments, and a regular textbook, plus tests. They covered everything from oxygen and hydrogen to the mathematics of chemistry to Einstein's theory. Competition was keen, with only top-flight students being allowed to take this course. What is the value of X? was a familiar question in Adv. Algebra and Freshman Algebra. Long hours and many sleepless nights accompanied the problems of math for many of these students. Believe it or not, most of the time the students found the value of XI 19 The American Government Class studied the workings of our Democracy and also other governments of the world. Special emphasis was put on the importance of State and County Governments and debates on the American Educational System its importance and strong and weak points. The Ag Classes studied Farm Mechanics, Income Tax, Conservation, Livestock, Crops and weed control. Motor Mechanics, and the Control of Rodents. Each boy in Ag had to have a special project, either crops or raising cattle. The World History Class studied Inventors, important events, rulers, and capitals of countries. The American History Class learned the American Presidents, the advancement of our democracy, and U.S. History from early colonies to our present day history. Both of these courses emphasized past mistakes. The World Geography Class studied most of the countries of the world and made large-scale maps of continents. asdflkj—The Typing Classes made great progress from the first day that they stumbled through these simple letters. Speed tests, problems and form letters kept us occupied during the year. Karen Svihel and Marguerite Krijger represented us at the ECC Commercial Contest. The Home Economics girls sewed suits, skirts, and dresses. When they turned to cooking, mouth- watering odors emitted from the Home Ec room, much to the annoyance of the student body, especially when the smell was onions! The Home Ec III Class held a Tea for the Junior Mothers, while the Home Ec II girls served a Buffet Luncheon for their special guests. The highlight of their year was the Dior Fashion Parade they presented for the May PTA Meeting. This show, with authentic sets, music, and long white aisles was completed by pretty girls, all decked out in the beautiful clothes that they had made. The English I Class worked hard on grammar and literature. The sophomores sweated through Silas Marner and Julius Caesar. English HI and IV were kept occupied most of the year by term papers. The juniors enjoyed their new American Literature books while the seniors enjoyed their new English Literature books and Macbeth and the English poets. The Sociology Class dug deep into the problems of our society and cultural and environmental influences. Special emphasis was placed on the causes and suggested cures for juvenile deliquency. At the end of the term the class wrote term papers having to do with some kind of social problem that was especially interesting to the student. 21 Student Council BACK ROW: Left to Right; K Stubkjaer, M. Maryls, Queen Carol, King Larry, Dale Homecoming Highlights Fall Activities Who would be the queen? Everyone eagerly awaited the entrance of the Homecoming Queen and Marshall and their attendants. A burst of applause welcomed Carol Smith and Larry Koch to the throne. Attending them were seniors Marlys Morrow and Dale Odden; juniors, Judy Johnson and Allen Nelson; sophomores Sandra Larson and Gary Koch; freshmen, Carolyn Nelson and Robert Larson; and crown bearers Eileen Nelson and Brian Odden. Queen Carol was crowned by Marlys before she gathered a large bouquet of rosebuds in her arms. King Larry received the royal sceptor after he was crowned by Dale. Both were clothed in royal garments. The stage was draped with pink and white streamers with the large letters L.P. made of pink carnations in the background. After the coronation the band and cheerleaders led the students to the ballpark where a pepfest was held around a large bonfire. Homecoming festivities came to a grand close with a snake dance and a show afterwards. FHA Most Beautiful Love and Marriage FFA Most Original Tom Dooley We Love A Parade Our Homecoming Parade on October 23 was a great success. It consisted of Lake Preston and DeSmet bands and a large variety of floats from the high school and the grade school. Our high school floats were based on the theme Popular Songs. There were three divisions for the floats to be entered in: most beautiful, most humorous and most original. During the half time of the football game plaques were awarded by the American Legion, the Kiwanis Club, and the Commercial Club to the winning floats. The FHA float, which placed first in most beautiful division was done in white napkins and red crepe paper. It was a wedding ceremony with little cupid aiming his arrow at the bride and groom. The FFA float the most original consisted of a real tree trunk with the large hangman's noose ready for our opponents. Winning the most humorous was the Sophomore Bird Dog float. The dog on this float was enjoying his dinner of Cardinals. His mouth was opened continually while his eyes rolled with delight. Bruce K., Manager Gary K. Have Football, Will Travel On September 12 the Divers got off to a roaring start in the 1958 football season with an 18-14 victory over Garretson. Larry Koch scored 2 touchdowns and Don Abel scored 1 TD leading a Diver offense that ground out 257 yards. On September 14, Clear Lake's gridders fell to an immovable defense and a steam-rolling offense brought forth by the Divers. Owen Malone and Dennis Tolzin each scored 2 touchdowns with Dennis Bonde scoring 1 and also making 17 unassisted tackles. Jaspe's Quartz-siters handed the Divers their only loss of the campaign when they beat them by a 26-6 score. Dale Odden scored the Diver's lone touchdown on a quarterback sneak. The Divers marred General Beadle's October 2nd Homecoming with a 19-13 victory over the Bluejays. The Divers scored 2 TD's early and held that lead despite a last minute drive by the Bluejays, but with a minute to go a long run by Dennis Tolzin salted the game away. Again playing the role of spoilers, the Divers handed DeSmet's Bulldogs a 33-6 defeat on the latters October 10th Homecoming. Don Abel scored 2 touchdowns, Owen Malone one, Larry Koch one, and a Jon Thorsheim to John Hamlot pass netted the other TD. The Divers ended a successful grid campaign by defeating the Arlington Cardinals 14-0 on the Divers October 23rd Homecoming, thereby taking sole possession of 2nd place in the Dakota-Minnesota Conference. In the first quarter, a blocked punt set up the score by Homecoming Marshal, Larry Koch. In the third period, All-Stater Don Abel went over for the last TD of the season. The Divers defense was tight as a drum with the Cardinals never advancing beyond the 50 yard line, in a game that was more in the Divers favor than the score indicated. For the season, the Divers scored 19 touchdowns and featured an outstanding defense all season long. Dale O. Co-Captain Don Abel Dave B. Spotlighting the Senior Gridders These 5 Senior Gridders had much to do with the success of the team this year. Dave Bonde started at offensive Center and played halfback on the defensive team. Darwin Tolzin started at Left Tackle on Offense and played defensive Halfback. Dale Odden was the starting Quarterback, and his steady leadership helped to keep the team on their winning ways. Co-Captain Larry Koch started at Right Halfback on offense and Right End on the defensive unit. At his Halfback position, Larry averaged over 5 yards per carry. Co-Captain Don Abel averaged 7.9 yards per carry from his Left Halfback position on Offense and was immova- ble as a rock from his defensive Left End position. Don was selected to the second-team All State 11 man football Squad. Their only losses came to DeSmet and Arlington and later on in the season they avenged both of these losses by large margins. In April they entered the Hi-Y Tournament in Sioux Falls, and advanced to the finals where they were beaten by Sioux Falls Simko. The B's featured good outside shooting, a strong defense, good passing, and well executed plays. Gary K. and Ron B. teamed together to make a real slick-working, high scoring, defensive-minded pair of guards. Wesley M. and Ken S. held down the forward positions. Ken was stellar rebounder and a good outside shot, and was the teams top scorer in the Hi-Y Tourney. Wes was depended upon for inside scoring punch, was a rugged rebounder and was at his best in a tight game. Ron S., from his center position was a consistent rebounder and could be counted upon heavily for scoring from the outside, as well as the inside. Leon K., Bruce K., Dick C„ and Terrol W., all proved their abilities at the guard, forward, guard and center positions respectively. The Mile Relay team composed of Bill Larson or Vincent Wienk, Don Abel, Jon Thorsheim, and Larry Koch proved to be the most consistent winner, eventually lowering the school record from 3:46 to the 3:37.3 that they ran in the State Meet. The 880 Relay team, composed of the same men, also showed great strength, breaking the school record of 1:38.6 in the preliminary heat in the record time of 137.6. For individual performances, Jon Thorsheim was a consistent winner in the high jump and tied for 1st in the State Meet with a leap of 5'9 . Larry Koch won the broad jump at the State with a leap of 20,5' and consistently placed. Feasting in fairyland. The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was held on April 17, in the high school auditorium. The auditorium was decorated according to the theme Fairyland Romance using mint green and white. There were rows of green and white crisscrossed crepe paper bordering the dance floor. Pink and white flowers were attached to the crepe paper throughout. The ceiling was made of interwoven crepe paper streamers. A large hand painted mural showing a fairyland scene highlighted the decorations. The theme was printed in pink flowers over the main archway. Brian Crane's orchestra supplied the music. The banquet tables were decorated with pixie figures intermingled between colored branches cov- ered with colored popcorn. The waiters and wait- resses wore pixie outfits of green and black. The speaker for the banquet was Mr. Tom Prendergast. Dennis Tolzin, junior class president, gave the wel- come with senior class president, Darwin Tolzin, giving the response. Dave Bonde gave a vocal solo and Myrna Anderson a bass horn solo. The wishing well from which punch was served. The hand painted mural- of a fairyland scene. We’ve Won One Goal! Thursday evening, May twenty-first, twenty-nine excited seniors marched down the candlelighted aisle of juniors. They were clothed in blue gowns and white hats with gold tassels. A white carnation, the class flower, was given to each senior by the school. The motto, In Ourselves the Future Lies, hung in the background in pink and white. Baskets of flowers surrounded the front of the stage. Milton Rich, Special Services Director, General Beadle State Teachers College, inspired them to attain success. Special music was furnished by Sharon Jibben, flute solo, Girls'Sextet, and Mixed Chorus. Beverly Johnson, Myrna Andersen, and Darlene Brown gave the valedictorian and co-salutatorian addresses.
