The journalism class is proud to dedicate the 1969 OLYMPIAN to the concept of champions. Students and faculty are champions, not only in athletics, but in academics and in life 'lgqhis was an outstanding year for the champion hockey team. They brought home five trophies to add to the trop y case. Morale and teamwork make a championship team. Team pride and a feeling of accomplishment even though a game was lost is another form of championship. It takes courage to congratulate the official winners, but such courage can make the losers champions. Although Lake Placid athletes did not excel in all sports, they proved themselves to be champions by their fine attitude and sportsmanship. The seniors who have achieved academic awards, and those who have achieved other awards fwhich will be listed on the last pages of this yearbookj are champions. In the past four years they have shown they are champions. Those students who have contributed to the development of the school by their fine achievements in extra- curricular activities are also champions. This is a long list and includes all those members of organizations that have given of themselves for the school or the well being of others. Without a faculty, a dedicated board of education and staff a school would cease to function. Board of education members Mr. Henry Gelles and Dr. George Hart, staff members Mr. John Dixon, Mrs. Ruby Hare, Mrs. Frieda Lyman, Mr. Stanley Pelkey, Mrs. Goldie Reid, Mr. Francis Sheffield, Mrs. Marion Shipman, Mr. Norv Watson and Mr. George Weaver all of whom have given more than ten years of service to our school can be classified as champions. Certainly people such as Mrs. Doris Keane, Miss Lillian Kilburn, Miss Katherine O'Rourke and Mr. Howard Page who have devoted more than thirty years of their lives to the students of Lake Placid are excellent examples of champions. We are extremely proud of them! Some faculty members have given more than twenty years of devoted service to the Lake Placid school. These are Mrs. Eloise Balch, Miss Cornelia Bonsignoire, Mr. Robert Connelly, Mr. Arthur jackson, Mr. Chester McKirahan and Mrs. Elizabeth Pelkey. There are other faculty members who have been at Lake Placid for ten years or more. This list includes Mr. Wendell Bartholomew, Mrs. Alice Colby, Mr. joseph Dugan, Mr. Thomas Morgan, Miss Ann Roland and Mrs. Shirley Whalley. These people can also be acclaimed as champions. Congratulations to all these champions! We take pride in the contributions you have made. We wish you well in all of your future undertakings. To all of you champions we dedicate this 1969 OLYMPIAN, and hope you will remember the school year through this book as a championship year. We trust there will be many more. NATALINO VISMARA BERARDI Nat, our foreign exchange student, came to Lake Placid with only one word in his English vocabulary, Hi. Of course, he did know how to read and write our language. Then his ready smile and willingness soon overcame the language barrier. He proved to be quite an asset to the basketball team. While he was in Lake Placid he lived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thompson. His many friends here will always re- member him. 15 Alma M ater Mid sparkling lakes and mountains fair Piercing the sky High on the hill midst beauty rare Stands our Lake Placid High With purpose high and spirits bright We march on the road to fame Making each foot print clear To mark the path in Placid's name Through the years Lake Placid High We'll sing to you Thinking of our dear old school Midst the mountains blue Though we roam o'er land or sea Our love for you n'er dies For we will make the world re-echo With the praise of Placid High. One of their major projects was to gather information and check into the workings of a student court to see if it would work in .L. P. H. S. The National Honor Society inducted four permanent members this year and five probationary members. Brian Bliss, Mary Claire Carroll, janet Hurley and Florie Whalley were all sworn in as full flegded members. Brian Gill, David Hunkins, Kathy Theodore, Halsey Washburn and Marion Wolfe were admitted as probationary members. Selection this year was based on evaluations made by teachers. The four points of admission were scholarship, leadership, service and character as set by national policy. Latin Is Dead-But Club Lives On The Latin Club is in its second year with Mrs. Lieselotte Hanna as its ad- visor. The club had many activities such as a banquet, hikes, popcorn sale and picnic. The banquet in the fall was considered one of the highlights of the Latin Club's year. PRIMA CENA ROMANA Sodalicii Latini Scholae Grammaticae Laci Placidi V Kal. Journalists Try Innovations This yeai-'s journalism class worked very hard to produce a suc- cessful OLYMPIAN. Under the supervision of Mrs. Phyllis Francis each member of the class shared the responsibilities for the year- book. This involved planning lay- outs, proportioning pictures, writing and typing copy. Members of the Sales-Management class, taught by Mr. john Cogan, acted as salesmen in getting advertising and subscriptions for the yearbook. Karen Frayne was our business manager and Bill Smith was always busy with his camera as photog- rapher for the OLYNIPIAN . The class learned many new things by using a new format for the MOUNTAINEER. Stories were assigned, written and rewritten before final typing. Hours of effort were expended for every issue. MOUNTAINEER editors were Janet Hurley and Butch Martin. Sports assignments were carried out by Randy Bickford, janet Hurley, Dennis Smythe helps Karen with Butch Martin, Cathy Richards and Dennis Smythe. Page Assistant Principal SUNY Cortland, B.S. Syracuse University, M. S. This yearbook is published to show just what we did during this school year 1968-69. If you made a contri- bution it will show up somewhere in the pages of this book. As a person involved in the welfare of this institu- tion, may I commend you and congratulate you for making Lake Placid Central School a better place for us all. In this connection I should like to thank all students Qpast and presentj and all staff members for making my thirty-three years such wonderful ones. The memories of these years are so many, and so tremendous, that the passing years can't possibly dim them or destroy them. As one would expect there have been many changes since 1936. Most of them have been for the ood. There S is one determinant of a good school that I hope the forth- coming years will bring back--that is, the intense LOYALTY and SCHOOL SPIRIT that staff members and students had years ago. They felt that this was the Best school in the North Country. I hope that this feeling can be recaptured and be deserved. It makes one's school days so much happier and so much more worthwhile. Congratulations yearbook staff for ANOTHER fine yearbook. Supervising Principal SUNY at Cortland, B.A., St. Lawrence University, M.A. On behalf of the faculty and administration, may we express appreciation to the yearbook staff for their very fine efforts this year. We are pleased with the results of your endeavors. May we also bid farewell to our senior Class of 1969. These young people should be proud of their accomplish- ments. The awarding of five New York State Scholarships to this class indicates the academic endeavors of the past four years. As you go on to work, marriage, military service or college, may you think continuously in terms of how you were prepared to face life and be responsible in offering suggestions for improvement to those who serve the youth of our times.
