This year we have added manylnew teachers to our staff. It is a first teaching experience for some, and we would like to congratulate them for doing such a fine job. In spite of the influx of new teachers, we must not forget those who return to our halls each year. They are the nucleus of our faculty and a most important part of our learning. Many seniors have been here for their entire education and will always hold fond memories of the elementary grades. We have watched the building of the annex and the introduction of new teachers. As seniors, we will always remember the foundation of our education at Lake Placid Central School. io Junior High Students Strive for Achievement BOTTOM ROW: Jeff Winch, John Cisco, Patty Lincoln, Martha Lopez, Linda Preston, Joyce Taylor, Debbie Burke, Jeanne Archie, Linda Stanton, John Bickford, Greg Nugent. The purpose of this class is to make its members knowledgable in the ways of newspaper and yearbook publication. Under the guidance of Mrs. Phyllis Francis, the new journalists took on the task of composing the MOUNTAINEER and laying out the pages of the OLYMPIAN. Thirteen eligible members of the class were inducted into the Quill and Scroll Honor Society for Journalism. They included: Harriet Belmore, Paul Bickford, Chris Bola, Dawn Carey, Mary Pat Dixon, Susan Fountain, Nancy Hart, Linda La Hart, Mary Lawrence, Steve Lopez, Greg Peacock, Connie Rascoe and Denise Wilson. Bombers Score Last T.D.s For Coach Dixon The Blue Bombers made a heroic attempt for the league championship this year, but fell short of their desires. The Bombers proved vic- torious on three occasions this year. At these games the terrain varied from sandy golf courses to muddy campuses. The weather ranged from rain to snow. However, the football team has taken home experiences and memories they will never forget. Mr. John Dixon, head coach, Mr. Ray Pratt, offensive coach, and Mr. Tom Morgan, defensive coach, devoted many hours coaching the team. This was Mr. Dixon's last season as coach after many years of dedicated service. Best part of football? The team is in the huddle . . . Girls Make Big Splash at Pool This year a new activity for girls was added to the extra-curricular schedule. It was swimming! Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Urfirer, owner of the Golden Arrow Motel, the girls were able to use the pool three nights a week. Under the direction of Miss Jean Biro, a Red Cross water safety instructor, the girls learned basic swimming and diving skills. They also learned swimming exercises. Next year, Miss Biro hopes to have a survival course and synchronized swimming for advanced swimmers. This new activity provided many hours of pleasure for all the girls who participated in it. Dive! They were just beginning to hit, with a winning streak of two games, when the season ended. Much credit goes to coaches Kent Cauley and Henry Casazza for their ef- forts to build the varsity and J .V. teams for future years. Varsity scored 2 wins to 16 losses, and theJ.V. team's record was 2-16. High scorer was Mike Eisel and Randy Bickford led the J .V. team. For the first time in the history of L.P.C.S. the Blue Bombers pulled a Northern League Championship out of the magical bag of tricks. The goal was held within reach by Mr. Raymond W. Pratt, coach. Overcoming the many hardships throughout the year and helping the icemen on their skates was done calmly, but firmly by Mr. Pratt. Led by strong lines and good defense, the Bombers played strategically throughout the season. Credit also must be given to the goal tenders. Lake Placid also gave three boys to the All Northern All Star team: Bill Beaney, center, Richard Boyer, goalie, and Gary Smith at defense. Tightly guarded. In the future, they hope to expand their program. The Future Teachers of America is a rather new club in our school, although it is well recognized through- out the nation. This year, the Future Teachers became affiliated, for the first time, with the national organiza- tion. This enables them to better participate in more activities on a national scale. Under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Boyer, Mrs. Laurie McCabe and Miss Gertrude Powers, the Future Teachers helped sponsor American Education Week in Lake Placid Central School. Officers elected for the year were President Chris Bola, Vice-President Marilyn Lewis, Secretary Gladys Williams, and Treasurer Cheryl Denton. Next year, the Future Teachers hope to expand their programs and have more members who are interested in becoming teachers. F.T.A. Students Work to Make a Better School NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Lake Placid Chapter of the Na- tional Honor Society was instituted in 1945. The purposes of this chapter are to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership and to en- courage the development of character. To be eligible for membership, a candidate must have a scholastic average of 8595 or a B. The student's eligibility is then considered for his service, lead- ership and character. This year the National Honor Society inducted 9 new members. They include 2 seniors, Janet Lopez and Richard Nic- olayson, and '7 juniors: Dawn Carey, Cheryl Denton, Mary Pat Dixon, Cathy Lawrence, Steve Lopez, Greg Peacock and Pat Roland. YOUTH CORPS The Youth Corps is a student organization all over the country. It helps students to find jobs. This year, the program was sponsored by Mr. Nick Kopchick. During the school year the group was relatively small, but as summer rolls around the group enlarges to include the needed summer help. During the school year, the Youth Corps members generally worked around the school where needed. Mr. Kopchick had girls working in the cafeteria, and in the office. The boys worked around the school and on the campus. FUTURE HOMEMAIGIRS CLUB Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Shirley Whalley, the Future Homemakers Club has done a lot to improve unfortunate conditions they knew about. Working closely with the Future Nurses Club, the Homemakers made and collected toys to take to Sunmount State Hospital in Tupper Lake. It is hoped that the club will make this an annual trip. The Future Homemakers also prepared and helped to serve the refreshments at the Junior Prom. The goal of the FHC is to help prepare girls for a home and family later in life. By teaching the girls how to sew, cook, and keep hpuse the girls are getting a good foundation to 'build their future homes. We extend to you our sincere wishes for a happy and successful future. Our fullest efforts and hearty attempts have been put forth in order to make this book presentable to you seniors and underclassmen. We hope that you will enjoy every page and delight in each picture that possesses a fond memory for you. Our aim of having a picture of every student in the school was not fulfilled because of absences and lack of cooperation from the freshman class. We apologize for any errors or mistakes that are the fault of the journalism class or the printers. We hope that with each passing year this OLYMPIAN will prove a more valuable memory book. We hope that it will bring you many hours of pleasant reminiscences. We close our book now with fond and sincere wishes for the graduates of 1967. The OLYMPIAN Staff THE END!
