Argus, who was gifted with one hundred eyes, was summoned by the goddess Hera. His task was simply to guard another goddess named lo. But when Hermes, who was in love with lo heard of this, he was greatly angered and caused Argus to fall into a deep sleep and then killed him. Hera was greatly saddened when she heard of this, so she scattered the eyes of Argus in the tail of a peacock, there they would remain forevermore open and watchful upon all those left in the world.
