A C T I V I T I E S 59 AFRICAN SAFARI Rainy and bleak weather during the first week of October put a damper on all except Homecoming activities and spirit at Lake Oswego High School. “African Safari” was the theme, and many of the activities centered upon that motif. Taking place on the first day of the week was the traditional assembly for choosing the Homecoming court. Tom Spear and Matt Runyan were the emcees. In their skit, they played two bumbling detectives trying to trace down the missing list of princesses. Finally, amid much hilarity, the list was recovered, and the eight princesses were named. Khaki-clad students roamed the halls on Tuesday during Camouflage Day. In the middle of the week, a double lunch was held for the performance of the air bands. Six bands “played”, including the unforgettable, simply extraordinary “Village People”. The senior class expressed their abundance of school spirit by winning each of the class competitions — for the dress-up day and the sign and float contests. On Thursday, during the final assembly of the week, the 1982 Homecoming Queen was named. Emcees Runyan and Spear sauntered among the expectant princesses, and tension mounted until Julie Brown, a senior princess, was crowned Homecoming Queen amid much clapping and cheering. In honor of Queen Julie, several talented groups gave performances. The Windjammers charmed everyone with their “Tribute to Cartoons”, and the First Mates danced to the tunes of “Eye of the Tiger” and “Gonna Fly Now”. The JV and Varsity Rallies gave exhibitions of their talents, too. Hopes that Oregon would not expel its infamous “liquid sunshine” were crushed as the drops started falling. But the parade, consisting of class floats, the Laker Band, First Mates, rallies, and a stream of various vehicles, proceeded into downtown Lake Oswego in the pouring rain. Lake Oswego played West Linn on Friday night. Loyal Laker fans watched as their team defeated the Lions 21 to 13. The traditional dance was held Saturday night, and thus the 1982 Homecoming Week came to a close. 1. Taking his role of escort seriously, Mark Baysinger places a crown of flowers atop Princess Molly’s head. 2 Who will be the new Homecoming Queen? Princess Megan anxiously hopes it will be she. 3. Participating in the air band performances was a trio of juniors girls — Me lanie Ransom. Julie Cohen, and Sydney Sorenson. 2 Keeping the lions tamed under her own bare hands is senior Jennifer Campbell. 3. Armed and ready to venture out in the parade are seniors Lisa Schlenker and Pat Davis. P A R A D E 63 CHRISTMAS 1982: TRADITIONS ALTERED The two weeks before vacation set off for the festive Christmas season at Lake Oswego High School consisted of many various types of spectacles only known to this special time of the year. An assembly which featured the naming of the nine elected princesses headed the stream of activities. The Lake brothers, Ken and Eric, emceed this occasion with their typical hilarity. The introductory skit involved the playing of a “Matchgame” and induced much laughter as the idiosyncrasies of each panel member unfolded with each answer he or she gave. Then the princesses were announced. These nine lucky girls were Seniors Brenda Bond and Michelle Veillet, Juniors Heidi Jarman and Elizabeth Siegfried, Sophomores Kim Bowman and Katie Meck-ley, and Freshmen Melanie Noel, Tina Blodgett and Susan Baysinger. Later, at the Christmas dance on Saturday night, Brenda Bond was chosen as Christmas Queen. The Christmas concerts, traditionally held on Thursday evening and Friday morning, were moved to Wednesday evening and Thursday morning to accommodate the busy holiday schedules of students and teachers. As usual, a musical extravaganza was presented to the student body by the choirs, band, and orchestra. And this year, an effort was made to limit the number of pieces performed by each musical group so that “quality, not quantity” was the theme. But as has been the tradition from many years before, “Hallelujah Chorus,” sung by choir and faculty and played by orchestra and band, brought the assembly to a climactic ending. Throughout the week, doors and trees were decorated in the customary manner; however, a new twist was added to the collecting of canned foods. Jars labeled with names of certain teachers, administrators, and student groups were set out in the front lobby. By the end of the week, the people owning jars containing money over a specific amount would be obligated to jump into the swimming pool. This event, held on Friday, provided a spectacle enjoyed by all, as the student body cabinet, rally, and a few favored teachers and administrators took the plunge. All of the money collected went to the purchase of more cans and four tons of potatoes. Needless to say, the Lakers won their canned food competition against the Pacers!! 1. Cherubic females, dressed as candy hearts, waited expectantly for the naming of thirteen male sweethearts (fourteen, including the infamous Nick). The Valentines Assembly, with all of its candied trimmings, was taking place at Lake Oswego High School. When the lights dimmed, the names of these worthy male princes were announced: freshmen Andy Brambilla, Pete Hearn, Tom Kemph, and Steve Miller; sophomores Mark Jarman and Jason Kester and Chris Latshaw; juniors Andy Luetjen, John O’Connor, and Kevin Ogan; and seniors Brett Ly-barger, Ross Thurik, and Mark Vawter — and Nick. Throughout the week, sweethearts had the opportunity to send Valentine messages to each other, and on Wednesday, fashionable dressers filled the halls for GQ and Vogue Day. On Friday night, the Valentines Dance was held, were Ross Thurick was announced as King of all Hearts. 1. Anne Meckley and Clare Krill wonder who the lucky prince is that requires two sweet escorts. 2 Looking princely. Tom Kemph is crowned by escort Katy Behnke. 3. There was hardly a day during the busy May Fete week that Lakers did not don togas. The various activities during the May Fete season streamed by. The introductory assembly featured the announcing of the May Fete Court. The audience was amazed by the feat of Masters of Ceremonies Pete Niebergall and Tom Talbot to be impressive even without performing a skit. Several contests were held during the lunchtimes, but the traditional Thursday faculty-senior softball game drew the biggest crowd. A majority of seniors participated, forming a massive outfield whenever the faculty chanced to be up to bat. The spectators, enjoying the game and forgetting a new tradition, were caught unaware as water balloons descended upon them. A rousing number from the stage band heralded the opening of Friday’s May Fete assembly. The court waltz and other court festivities were performed with the auditorium lights on, but even with the lights, the enchantment was not taken away as the ten special couples gazed into each other’s eyes as they danced together. Tears arose as Nina Fraunfelder received her very worthy title of Queen. Skits were then presented in behalf of Queen Nina and her court. 1. Paige Taylor stands demurely with her escort, Roger McGuire, as they enter into the court waltz. 2. Nick overlooks Masters of Ceremonies Pete Niebergall and Tom Talbot as they host the May Fete festivities. 3 The court regally performs its rituals. 4. Kelly Decker moves into step with escort Trip Turner. 5. Vicki Lacefield works industriously with Penny Nees and Susan Fuller on the May Fete backdrop, a splendour in blues and purples. 6. The stage band played a very important part as they provided extra entertainment and covered scene changes for the skits as well. 7. The barriers of social groups disintegrate as a mass of seniors gather together on the floor to dance crazily to “Wiggie”. 1983 - —If-— lity£HD3 OF OlC dnoenz UJOKJJD 1. The television was an outlet for a very unique time medium, ‘The Loading Zone.’ The travelers landed at Mount Olympus and were introduced to their quest, to find the meaning of life, by Zeus (Scott Carr). Apollo (Tim Oliver) guided them as they visited many ancient activities, each of which stressed a moral and what happens when it is abused or ignored. The Senior skit was directed by Eric Lake, Matt Runyan, and Julie Brown. 1. The four time travelers (Eric Aebi, Lisa Abbot, Bob Fix, and Heidi Lambertson) learn of their quest to find the meaning of life from Zeus (Scott Carr). 2. Senior women take part in a toga dance. 3. Slaughtering the innocent Christian (Jim Forsyth), Boonan the Barbarian shows off his muscular physique. 4. During the Senior skit, Zeus (Scott Carr) jams to the tunes. SOPHOMORES The Sophomore skit, “The Box”, was based on the legend of Pandora’s Box. Two adventurous boys, Wally and Beaver Cleaver (Colin McNulty, Leo Morgaridge) opened the box and let all of the evils into the world. These evils were war, poverty, and-worst of all-Oregon weather. But last to come out was Hope, which cured all of the evils and saved the world. The skit was directed by Jeff Zindel and Michelle Boring. 1. Juniors, led by Bill Benjamin, imitate “Stripes . 2. Juniors Bob Beatty. Tom Jurney and Robin Schiff confer about their next move. 3. Leo Morgaridge is swayed by the good and bad fairies of his own conscience as he ponders whether to open the box. 4 Sophomore boys prepare for battle. JUNIORS The Junior skit, “A Break from Tradition,” focused on the townspeople, who were attempting to free Jess Rhodesius (Scott Moore) from exile on Mount Olympus. Jess had been overly disgusted that each year, the elders of the town won the festival competitions. He could only be freed if a quality presentation was given by the Juniors. Consequently, they presented three skits to impress Mikus Moora-dius (Mike Harmon) — a singing and dancing number to express the art and culture of Greece and Rome, a marching number to display their military excellence, and a dance routine by males. In the end, the excellent quality of their skits warranted the freeing of Jess and celebrations by all. The skit was directed by Lisa Zindel, Mike Peebles, and Lyn Ruiter. It could prompt one to laughter; it could prompt one to anger. But more than anything, watching those scenes unfolding in front of the eyes was able to make each member of the audience do a bit of self-scrutiny. The cast and the abundance of talent present added much to the play. Hard work out front and behind scenes was evident. All in all, “Feiffer’s People” was a play worth seeing, and it brought the drama department’s year to a good start. Capping the performance are such songs as “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” and “Always Leave Them Laughing.” Three schools — Lake Oswego, Lakeridge, and Tigard — combined their talents for this musical extravaganza. Although the leading man was from Tigard, talent from Lake Oswego was evident in our school’s twelve participating actors and actresses. Also, musicians from Lake Oswego’s string orchestra and band comprised much of George M’s orchestra, a very essential element in making the musical the success that it was. S P o R T S 101 ON TO STATE The football season was one of great dedication by team members. This was typified by the many players who had their heads shaved for the first practice. The state polls pitched the Lakers to finish fourth in the Three Rivers League, but the team came together and pushed hard throughout the season for the common goal for the league championship and state playoffs. The Lakers finished the season strong with a 5-2 league record and a three-way tie for second place with Oregon City and Putnam. In a Kansas plan play off, the Lakers beat both of them to win the second place playoff-berth against Grants Pass. In Grants Pass the Lakers played a great defensive game but the Cavemen emerged the winner with a 10-7 score. The Lakers ended with a total season record of six wins and four losses. L.O. played tough defense throughout the season and had three players on the first team all-league for defense. They were: Trip Turner and Tom Talbot at Linebackers and Scott Staff at defensive back. Second team all-league selections were: Mike Scotty at defensive back, Doug Kohlert at end and Jon Warren at tackle. Ross Thurik received honorable mention at defensive back. On offense Ken Bole was first team tackle, Doug Kohlert second team running back and Bob Griffith second team tight end. Honorable mention went to Scott Staff at quarterback and John O’Conner at split receiver. Bob Griffith was selected as a first team punter. L.O. The Lakers lost two more games, and won their last game to round off the season with a 5-4 record. Coach Anderson had this to say about the 5-4 season, “We were close in every game we lost, the boys worked hard and made much improvement throughout the season.” On offense, Eric Hermann was a consistant and tough blocker at the center position, along with Mike Smith who had lightening speed at the slotback position. The defense was the key to the J.V. teams success. Scott Holland and Beau Harlan consistantly wreaked the opposing teams, along with an excellent defensive back-field. J.V. Despite the extremely tough competition, the Lakers weathered the storm to finish in a tie for third place and force a playoff game with Rex Putnam for the final league playoff berth. The Lakers beat Rex Putnam handily and advanced to the sub-tournament where our Lakers out-hustled a physical Pendleton team to earn a chance to play the fifth-ranked West Albany Bulldogs for a -berth in the State Tournament. However, our Lakers fell one game short of the Memorial Coliseum by losing to the Bulldogs, who eventually won the third-place state trophy. Coach Sonny Long commended Pete Newiin who won the Three Rivers League scoring title and was voted first team all-league and Pete Niebergall and Mark Vawter who received Honorable Mention all-league. AND SOPHOMORE TEAM UNITY REAPS AWESOME RESULTS Combining the knowledge of new coach Doug Skilley and the strong leadership of captains John Bullock and Greg Stewart, this year’s sophomore basketball team got a lot accomplished. Making improvements in defense, attitude, and overall Laker basketball skills, this close-knit team rivaled to a very impressive 14-6 season record. Leading scorers for this mighty Laker b-ball team were John Bullock and Steve Forsyth. The boy’s J.V. basketball team had a stupendous season this year, culminating with an impressive 14-6 record. The team played very well during the preseason games but really turned on the juice as they entered the regular Three Rivers League competition. All the Lakers contributed to the team’s success, both in positive attitude and sound ball playing. Rod Leimbach and Ron Edwards provided the scoring power behind this omnipotent J.V. team. Next year’s varsity team will undoubtedly benefit from the acquisition of several talented and versatile J.V. players. Coach Gary Lavender feels the team will regroup and improve greatly in future years due to the younger members who gained precious varsity experience this year. The Varsity Boys’ team consisted of Bob Fix, Todd Sherman, Scott Carr, Chris Inman, Mike McCauley and Jim Miller. The whole varsity went to state and came in seventh. Bob Fix, who usually placed in the top five, took the lead for the ski team. Fix’s devotion to the sport is shown by the fact that he will be taking a year off of school next year to ski throughout the winter and perfect his already well-developed skill. The Varsity Girls’ team was led by Shannon McLaughlin, who usually placed in the top ten, and Maggie Wilson, who usually placed in the top fifteen. The members of this team went to state along with the boy’s team and came in ninth place. A large number of boys turned out for the J.V. Team, so the team broke up into two groups which traded off for races. Members competed for top places, which would enable those that attained those positions to race the most. The team consisted of thirteen members with only three seniors. As a whole, this season has been the best for the Laker matmen in several years. Much of the credit for the 7-9 record goes to Coach Dan Hicks, former NCAA champion at Oregon State University. The Lakers sent two members, Senior Doug Peters and Junior Mike Harman, to the State Tournament this year, which was rather disappointing as the team had expected to send five members. However, district placers included: Senior Brett Malone who earned fourth place, Juniors Pat Moore, Todd Tamura, and Freshman Neal Tamura who all placed fourth. The Lakers had a 4-14 record, which failed to show the superior effort put forth by the team. Frustration is a good word that describes the season for the batmen. Many games were decided by a small margin. If those close games were wins, the season would have been a totally different story. At one point, the team record was 6 wins out of 7 games. Al-though the team was a young one, with three freshman and two sophomores in the starting line-up, the team overcame this inexperience and was a play-off contender. For the season, senior captain Lisa Rowning led the team in hitting with a .500 batting average, and Freshman Shannon Smith led in extra base hits with 8 triples, 4 doubles, and a home run. TRACKSTERS REVISITED Our Laker boy’s track team headed into the season with high hopes for a winning record. However, the team was young and inexperienced, and despite spectacular individual efforts, they were unable to overcome weak areas and become a viable contender. They struggled through their extremely tough schedule to post a 2-4 final season record. Throughout their disappointing year, superb individual efforts outshined the overall adverse team effort. The Henderson brothers, Craig and Doug, did consistently well and at district Craig captured the fastest qualifying time for the 3000. Both boys went to state and Craig had the Hayward field crowd on it’s feet as he bolted past the favorites to take an early lead. The season turned out well, with the team taking a 2nd in district competition and an 8th in state. The team had three returning Varsity, and as the season developed, the younger players; including three freshman, began to aid the veteran members in winning duel matches within the league, and then later in district and state competition. Co-captains Kirby Kanada and Ross Thurik were tremendous assets to the team for both their skill and leadership. Freshman Craig Kanada set the all time low score, 75, at the Beaverton tournament, and Andrew Ragen made great improvement throughout the season. Coach Rhodes had to say of the season, “I felt the team did very well, and as the younger players develop, they should be a power within the state.” Lake Oswego 177 Milwaukie 166 170 West Linn 157 163 Rex Putnam 159 168 Lakeridge 167 154 Clackamas 154 168 Oregon City 151 Opp. Outcome 192 win 177 win 186 win 164 win 170 win 179 win 155 loss 149 loss 160 win 176 win 176 win 149 loss 1. Inexperienced, but ambitious linxsters rounded out the rest of the team with Holly Coors, Jocelyn Washington, Lisa Zindel, Jeannie Englerdt, and Jill Vessely. Continuous improvement was shown throughout the year which resulted in a league record of 4-5, and a respectable overall record of 7-7. Team captain and outstanding player Karen Campbell finished third in District Qualifying matches and earned a trip to the State Tournament. Karen competed successfully in the State Tournament by finishing fourth place against the state’s best golfers to cap a highly successful individual season. G I R L S G 0 L F 165 MAKING CHANGES It would be impossible, in such a short space, to express my feelings and thoughts of the past year. Anyone who thinks that student council is an insane and inefficient use of school time is dead wrong. Being a student body officer was, quite possibly, the most valuable learning experience that I have had here at L.O.H.S. over the past two years. Obviously, participation on an athletic team will teach a student the value of teamwork. However, it is my opinion that the A.S.B. cabinet that I was a part of exemplified a most significant team effort. We were a cabinet composed of quite different personalities. Our personality differences often resulted in conflicts. Fortunately, because of the high level of talent and maturity that existed within our group, we were able to transcend our personal differences and work together to accomplish several worthwhile achievements. Sure, we did not move any mountains, but if one member of the Lake Oswego High School Student Body feels as if his or her year was made a little better by our efforts, then I know that it was well worth it. STUDENT LEADERS The freshman class officers provided strong leadership for their class. They helped make the year more exciting for their constituents, and their ideas and actions were well received by the entire student body. This year’s sophomore class primarily made money through donut sales. Deciding to make more money, they contemplated the idea of holding a space shuttle exhibit on top of the new gym. However, after thoughtful consideration they abandoned the idea, realizing it was not only unfeasible but ludicrous. This year the junior class focused on making money for the Prom. The officers involved almost everyone in the class with selling gift checks, lemons, donuts, and bumper stickers. The Prom ended a successful year for the juniors. The senior class officers were very busy this year. They helped organize the Homecoming activities as well as the Christmas activities, and they were busy in the spring with May Fete and graduation ceremonies. Also, they were constantly working to raise money for the class gift. 1. Sophomore: Top row; Jana Wilson. VARSITY RALLY The Varsity Football Rally cheered their team to a 6-4 record. They had good weather and were enthusiastic throughout the season. The rally splits in the winter to cheer for Girls Basketball and Swimming and comes back together in the spring to take on the tough job of running scores in track meets. The Varsity Basketball Rally led their team to a 16-7 season. They also did Soccer and Volleyball during the fall. They had new, exciting stunts which they performed with the help of two rally guys. After Basketball season they rallied for Baseball. 173 1. In the fall, they led the J.V. football team on to a successful season as well as supporting the girls’ soccer team. During the winter season, ski races, sophomore boys’ basketball games, and wrestling meets kept the rally whirling. Spring brought softball and tennis, and the team members were encouraged by the enthusiasm of the rally as they played in their games. The freshman rally squads were involved all year as they cheered on football in the fall, two basketball teams in the winter, golf in the spring, and any other freshman team. Both the freshman and J.V. rally squads did much to promote spirit among all of the sports teams. 1 Selling plastic footballs are Holly Mackenzie. Mi chele Clark and Katharine Livingston. 2. The Three Rivers League had a small competition held at Milwaukie at which the First Mates received a rating of excellent. They next went to a competition in Corvallis where they acquired second place. Here they missed the chance of taking first place by accidently being late to inspection, which put them one point behind the team that took first. At the State competition, which was held at West Linn, the First Mates put on a great performance and took a third place trophy home. Also, Melissa Stewart was selected for the all-star team. For the first time, the First Mates traveled to Canada to march in the Victoria Day Parade. With their brilliant routine, they took first place. They also marched in the Rose Parade. Paige Taylor lead this terrific dance team as the team captain. She was a great leader and proved to be one of the best. The Flag Corp, now called the Color Guards, did a fantastic job this year. Tricia Mitchell was the captain of the squad. They entered no competitions, but they did travel to Canada to march in the Victoria Day Parade and the Rose Parade. There are seven girls on the Color Guards who have made a great name for themselves. 1. Performing during half time, the First Mates show their talent. 2. The staff made a strong effort to create a book with the theme, “More We, Less Me, Togetherness in ’83.” Heidi Szambelan was Editor, and her versatility was well-received, as she instructed others in the class, put together pages, and took pictures and developed them. Eric Aebi came in a the semester and became advertising manager, and Teresa Papp attained the position of Copy Editor. Advising the staff for the second year in a row was Mr. Pitchka, who also helped in the darkroom. Heidi Szambelan says to all who will receive the yearbook, “Enjoy this book. Y E A R B O O K S T A F F 185 MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT The Department of Choral Music had its usual busy program of activities this year. Under the direction of Dan Anderson, Chamber and A Cappella Choir presented its fall concert at Lake Oswego High School which included the introduction of the 1982-1983 Windjammers and Madrigals. In December, both Windjammers and Madrigals were busy performing for community groups around the area. The Choral Department also performed at Lloyd Center during the Christmas Season. In March, the Windjammers presented their annual variety Show which was entitled “That’s Entertainment” and performed thirty-one songs and dance productions from such Broadway Musicals as “Cats,” “Westside Story,” “My Fair Lady,” “Dream Girls,” and others. Solos were sung by all sixteen members, along with large and small group numbers to round out the evening of entertainment. Among the many vocal groups at Lake Oswego High School are the talented Madrigal Singers. This formal ensemble is composed of fourteen vocalists who perform music mainly from the 16th and 17th century. As with the Windjammers, the Madrigal Singers also perform outside the school for many private and public groups in the surrounding area, and over the years have built a reputation for vocal excellence. In early April of this year. Lake Oswego High School hosted the Three Rivers League Choral Festival. There were six other schools from around the area visiting, and at the finish of this festival the choirs joined together to perform one concert for the community. The Spring Choral Concert marked the closing of the 82-83 choir season, and the last major performance for many of the graduating seniors. On the evening of June 1st, students exhibiting outstanding qualities in the field of music were recognized for their contribution to another tremendous year. 1. Madrigals: Back row; Matt Freeman. The Windjammers by themselves and together performed solos, duets, and ensembles from such famous masterpieces as “That’s Entertainment,” “42nd Street,” “My Fair Lady,” “West Side Story” and “Dream Girls.” Scenes from each musical were created by the performances of pieces from the plays and outfits befitting each occasion. Students sere very creative with their costumes, ranging from Indians to believable E.T.s. In December, the orchestra participated in our school’s Christmas assembly. The highlight of the Christmas program was Junior Heather Gisch’s moving violin solo of “Ave Maria.” In March, Maya Ginsberg, Mike Harman, Heather Gisch, Clare Krill, and Sara Adams competed in the Oregon Music Educators District III Solo and Ensemble Contest, receiving ratings of “superior” and “excellent.” Mike, Heather, and Maya also did well in auditions this year, with Heather and Maya making it into the Oregon Honors Orchestra (January, in Eugene), and Mike achieving a position in the All Northwest Orchestra, (April, in Seattle).
