BOTTOM: Lori Boek watches as Mr. Davis fills in registration form. Due to the great success of arena scheduling last year, it was repeated this year. The first day of school, seniors, juniors, sophomores and finally freshmen filed through the sweltering boys’ gym to sign up for their classes. Students also paid their fees and picked up their 73 year- books. Senior Omega members manned the boxes where people picked up their class cards, which was different from last year. Although the set-up was confusing and frustrating to some freshmen, everyone got through and was ready to start the next day with his new schedule. TOP LEFT: Dave Wolfard waits for a pen to sign in. Homecoming In keeping with the current Western trend, Lakers picked a theme of “After the Gold Rush and plunged right into Homecoming the third week of school, one of the earliest homecomings on rec- ord By planning homecoming early, Lakers hoped to take advantage of the nice Sep- tember weather and avoid the November rains. The plan nearly backfired as it rained early in the week, but it did clear off for the parade Friday afternoon. Sidelined from football with an injury, Gary Morean turned his talents toward becoming Master of Ceremonies. He per- formed many wonderful feats with his trusty horse, Bessie TOP: The Golddiggers, Trista Waarvick, Stacie Dodd, Ann Swearingen, and Marge Handy, enter- tain at the assembly. Homecoming Amid shrieks of approval, the 1973 Homecoming princesses were announced on Friday, September 14. The following Friday, just before the annual parade got on its way, last year's Queen, sophomore Michelle Sweet, relinquished the crown to junior princess Pam Stout. The two senior princesses were Made- line Wright and Denise Ehman. Debbie Lawrence represented the junior class along with the queen. The sophomores chose Joyce Goudy and Jill Miller as their princesses. The freshman class chose Kirsten Wright and Lisa Arbini as its very first princesses. Even though it was the day after Homecoming, people were still able to muster enough energy and thought to make it all worthwhile. Topics of discussion included faculty involvement in student government and changes in student rights and responsi- bilities. These discussions were very pro- ductive and united the leaders toward reaching some of the goals brought out. Highlighting the weekend were folk dancing Saturday night, a free-for-all tal- ent show, and several raids through Cabins A and B by Cabins D and E and vice-versa. There was also a huge water fight fol- lowing the talent show, and almost all got involved whether they wanted to or not. Also a game of coed football, which was dubbed the Mud Bowl , was played in the pouring rain. Sunday morning everyone got the op- portunity to take aim at the administra- tors with questions and comments during the administrative “hot seal . TOP: Ann Swearingen and Gail Christian lead the square dancing. BOTTOM: Ralph Cunningham entertains with several guitar numbers. Forty Carats To open its season, LO chose this smash Broadway comedy by Jay Allen. The play dealth with the romance of a 40-year old divorcee who fell in love with a youth of 22. Upon returning from Greece, where this love affair occurred, she still had to face the problems that faced her when she left--what to do with a 17-year old daughter, a mother of eccen- tric nature, an ex-husband whose career was quickly fading, and the affections of a 45-year old rich Texan who is courting her. And then the youth she met in Greece shows up to date her daughter! LEFT: Marge Schenk (Mrs. Adams) confers with Robin Wall (Mrs. Mar- golin) in the real estate office. BOTTOM RIGHT: Robin Wall (Mrs. Margolin) seemed per- fect as Ann's zany secretary. Fall Assemblies Fall rally put forth a great amount of effort in order to make the pep assemblies more interesting .for all. By introducing new types of competition within the school such as the frozen-spoon-on-a- string relay to initiate new teachers, drop- ping-the-egg-on-the-face contest, tug of wars, and a freshman-senior introduction via an interdental rope of licorice, the rally succeeded in bringing Laker spirit back. Although the fall season was domin- ated by Friday pep assemblies, the mono- tony was broken by a 2-hour assembly on shoplifting. One speaker, above all, drew a reaction from the students. That speaker was the Vice-President of securities at Fred Meyer, Mr. Dehann. LEFT: Senior Ken Guy was voted Mr. Touchdown. TOP RIGHT: Trent Kamman and John O'Connor help pull the seniors to a tug-of-war victory. BOTTOM LEFT: Sophomore princess Kris Morehouse is escorted to her chair by senior Herb Lafitte. BOTTOM CENTER: Freshman princess Liz Shirley. BOTTOM RIGHT: Freshman princess Randi Underdahl. Christmas Christmas festivities got underway as students cast their ballots during their lunch period for the princesses. Seniors selected Marge Handy and Mimi Herrle: Marge Schenk and Kathy Kamman were junior selectees: sophs chose Mardonna Anderson and Kris Morehouse, and fresh- men had Randi Underdahl and Liz Shirley as their representatives on the Christmas court There were several events this year that really raised the Christmas spirit in our school. For one, there was the Canned Food Drive in which LOHS finally came out victorious over Tigard. Also the decor of the halls was helped by decorating doors for class competition in the annual decorating contest. To round out the activities, there was the Christmas assembly in which the choir, Windjammers, Poop Decks, and band expressed their spirit for Christmas in a musical way. The teachers also gave an amusing skit trying to find the spirit of Christmas. Friday, Christmas MC's Darrell Rus- trum and Jeff Strothers announced the 1973 Christmas Queen, Marge Schenk. Topping off the festivities was the Silver Bell Ball featuring the group Vegas. TOP LEFT: Senior princess Mimi Herrle. BOTTOM LEFT: A radiant queen, Marge Schenk, was joined in the festive occasion by the Cinnamon Bear. RIGHT: Junior princess, Kathy Kamman, is cheered by fellow Lakers just after she was named junior prin- cess. Vocal Music Interest in the choir soared to a new all-time high as Mr. Larry Cunningham came in and really took over. Despite the gasoline shortage, the choir journeyed to Salem in December to sing in the State Capital Rotunda. It also went there for an exchange assembly with South Salem before hosting the Salem school here later in the spring. More than 100 members were enrolled in musical activities by the end of the year. Two new groups were formed and immediately became very popular. The Poop Decks (Gary Morgan, Jim Brown, Ole Nordling, and Kevin Morrison) sang such barber shop favorites as “In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town,” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “Sioux City, Sue,” and “Hello, Dolly.” The Decketts (Gail Christian, Marge Schenk, and Jill Sorenson) went in for songs like “The Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy and “In the Mood.” Besides the usual fall, spring and Christmas concert, the choir also sang at Lloyd Center at Christmas time. It was a week of fun, festivities, and class competition. A princess was chosen from each class. The class that had the most points at the end of the week got to have its princess named Queen at the halftime of the Cen- tennial game. Each class had a wall or hall to decor- ate cleverly as well as present a simple skit during both lunch periods. Gypsy Because the musical comedy was se- lected by the Internaional Thespian So- ciety as one of the top musicals to be performed on the high school level, the cast was invited to the International Thespian Conference at Muncie, Indiana during the summer. This honor is even more significant when it is realized that only one musical from across the United States is invited to perform at the Conference. The cast and orchestra will perform before nearly 2,000 Thespians. Even the faculty got into the act, per- forming “Gypsy” one night after the regular performances by the students. And then it was performed again by the students in the spring, along with various other fund-raising drives, to finance the trip to Indiana. Ann Swearingen starred in the role of Momma Rose, with Lisa Fleischaan as Gypsy and Robin Wall as Baby June. TOP: Even the faculty got into the gypsy act. Winter Assemblies In addition to the various pep assem- blies, there were several others that seemed to meet all the students' needs. Prior to an evening concert, the First Gear entertained and had a twist contest. Four Korean girls sang and danced in appreciation for all the help given their country by the US in the past. And visiting AFS students told interesting accounts of their homelands and exper- iences in the US. Two Lewis and Clark students did a pantomine, showing what Basketball Coach Sonny Long's childhood was like. TOP: First Gear entertained at a winter assem- bly. The closing day students had to brave the wind and rain if they wanted to ride the Octopus, Scrambler, or Paratrooper. But, on Friday and Saturday there was plenty of activity as bargain-seekers looked through various “white elephants and the wide selection of used books. Baked goods were also available, and the garden shop had many items for spring planting. Granny’s Attic featured hand-made items like jewelry, macrame, pillows, and caligraphy. LO 7, HOOD RIVER VALLEY 6 - Kent Howe scored both the touchdown and the winning extra point as he finally went over the 100 yard mark, rushing for 113 yards. HRV, unwilling to settle for a tie, went for a 2-point conversion and failed. LO 14, GRESHAM 3 - In the muddiest game of the year, played in a driving rainstorm, the Lakers outplayed their heavier and favored rivals. Eric Gassner tallied on a 43-yard pass from Steve Bartelt and Kent Howe bulled over from the one. Bill Hoffee, Glen Long, and Dallas Ward all intercepting, with Ward returning his 30 yards. CENTENNIAL 16, LO 7 — The Lakers started out well by marching downfield and scoring in their opening drive, but from then on they just couldn't put anything together. Penalties at crucial times also hurt as did the loss by injury of Bob Rose, who had been averaging 15 yards per carry, and Les Scuito. Kent Howe and Bryn Torkelson each picked off an Eagle pass. Rose and Steve Hincks averaged 22 yards per kickoff return. THE DALLES 21, LO 17 — The Lakers jumped out to an early lead by scoring the first time they had the ball. A blocked punt by Bill Hoffee led to another score as Dan Rustrum recovered in the Indian end zone. Then on the next drive the Lakers were stopped short of a TD, so Kent Howe booted a 15-yard field goal. But in the second half the eventual! Columbia Division champions came back to defeat LO. LO 29, BARLOW 0 — Two TD passes from junior QB Dave Claunch to Eric Gassner helped the Lakers score in every period but the second. Claunch was 4 for 9 for the game. TD's by Kent Howe and Bob Rose along with a safety by Dan Rustrum also helped out. The defense was superb as it held the Bruins to minus 23 yards rushing, while LO ran for 208. Dallas Ward intercepted three passes and Jim Mendenhall and Rick Hunt each grabbed one. LO 13, WEST LINN 6 — The Lions jumped out to a 6-0 early lead in the first quarter and the rest of the game was scoreless until the final quarter when the Howe brothers went into action. Kent, the junior, and Steve, the sophomore, each scored once. Steve Howe's TD was set up on a pass interference call on the 10-yard line. The Howes accounted for 110 of the 142 yards LO gained. Kent Howe led the team in scoring for the season with 57 points on 7 TD's, 12 PAT's, and 1 field goal. Eric Gassner scored 3 times for 18 points, while Steve Hincks, Dan Rustrum, Bob Rose, and Steve Howe all tallied once. TOP: Jubilant Lakers ring victory bell after home triumph. The policy went into ef- fect on November 13, and from that time the covered breezeway west of the history library and the breezeway by the music building were popular places for many Lakers. Smoking was limited to before school, break, lunch, and after school. TOP LEFT: Dr. Kent Myers, assistant superintendent. TOP RIGHT: Dr. Lloyd F. Millhollen, Jr., Super intendent of schools. Unlike previous yearbooks, the sport team pictures are all grouped at the close of the book to provide more action shots on the layout. Gang captions were also used for the first time this year to enhance the design. Vertical heads were another new addition to the '74 yearbook, as well as 8 more pages than last year. To satisfy most Lakers, unhappy with last year's cover, the editors decided to return to the traditional blue. TOP: Editor Grant Wilson at the Leadership Workshop. BOTTOM LEFT: Donna Kusch, layout and division pages. BOTTOM CENTER: Krista Ross, class sections. BOTTOM RIGHT: Peter Gomena, as- sistant editor and introduction. TOP LEFT: Tim James, chief photographer. TOP RIGHT: Advisor Gene Anderson shows book to a couple of people from the State Department who were here evaluating LOHS this spring.
