FOOTBALL IN '44 We got off to a fresh start in football this year with a new coach, new players, and new ideas We had three weeks to round into shape and 'Lou' Vincent wasted no time We were all out to win this year, mostly for revenge As most of you will member, we won only one game and tied another last year The team had several veterans back and some out for the first time 'Lou' went to work, and before we knew lt we had whipped the pants off Caledonia, winning 25 14 This got us off to a big start, and we came back the next week and trimmed Bellevue 26- 6 The next week we played our old rival Middlevllle again We came out on top 25 O Then the team received a blow Eugene Smith, right half, star passer, and punter, was killed ln a hunting accident We did come back and cutplay Ionia the next week, although we ended up on the short end of a 7 6 score We out gained them and out fought them, but they connected with a lucky pass and we just couldn't hit pay dlrt again This slowed us only tempor- arily, and we walloped Nashville the following week 40 6 They couldn't stop us! The next week we absorbed our second defeat by one point This tlme lt was Beldlng and the led by one point Then Bob Rowland cllmaxed a drive down the field by shooting over from the four with only two seconds to go, thus giving us the game New for a look at the line-up Allen and Sedore were the ends Allen's height aided him in catching passes, and Sedore, although light, was a tiger on defense lc Klnley and Kelly were stalwarts at the tackles Ghorely and Roe were the guards. Chorely played as fine a game at guard as has been seen here in a long while Smith developed into a good center In the backfleld we had Art McCartney, Gaptm and quar ter back, who played a steady and aggressive game At fullback we had 'Big Clard'Blahr ly who hit with all 190 pounds of him, and something usually gave Bob Rowland took over Sm1th's position at right half and played great ball Pete Lehman running from left half was high scorer and scat back This team was bolstered by Pete Pearson, Kenneth Smith, Don lcDowell Gerald Rowland, and Dick Goodemoot The team of '44' now says good bye and wishes the team of '45' even better luck K ll e - . e T r9' score was again 7-6. The next game was a thriller, and Portland ln the final minutes
