RICHARD LIEB and MRS. JANE KOHLENBERG J ‘ E What is the Aura? This publication was originally entitled “Aura” because the word means “spring breezes” and that was what the book was, a collection of the year’s issues of the school paper, The Breeze. Today it goes beyond this, and is now molded into the form of a modern yearbook of people, places and memories. We have attempted to capture and hold all these memories of our year, 1967-1968, in one book. This is the book. This is The Aura. This year the top ten can- didates were introduced before the student body at the Christ- mas assembly. At the dance held on December 23rd, the Queen and her attendants were announced. Because this was pre-Christ- mastime, we reduced the num- ber of trees to one _ large Christmas tree, located in the front center of the auditorium. This large tree held the special snowflakes which had the cou- ples names written on them. Sil- ver trees and colored lights accented the atmosphere. | | | | | | | | | | M. Farley and C. This dance was sponsored by the Student Council with the proceeds going to the March of Dimes. This new twist in dating for the night was that all expenses were to be paid by the girl. The 1968 Senior Play ‘““The Man Who Came to Dinner” was the last major activity of the class as a whole. This play, probably the most sophisticated ever done at Lake, was presented May 10th and 11th in the auditorium. The plot centers around the famous orator, Sheridan Whiteside, who “acci- dentally slips into the life of the Stanley family.”” His unnecessary stay, as well as countless visits from some of his many interesting friends causes complications for Mr. and Mrs. Stanley. Eventually he was forced to leave and in doing so, slipped on the doorstep, bringing about a return engagement to the horror of the entire household. | 13. Moon, M. Farley, M. Sehr, B. Rideout, C. Cross Country race participants (the schoolboys who run in their underwear on cold days) need a two mile course up and down hills. At Lake High School, the coach, Ray Winchell, had trouble mapping a course. Besides flatlands, the school is hemmed in by the newly activated Toledo Municipal Airport, railroads, and the Detroit- | Toledo Expressway. The route finally selected by Mr. Winchell didn’t work out too well. Tom Littlefield, Ralph Hamilton, and Rick Schwamberger lost a race when they were held up by a slow-moving freight train. The advisors of both Pep Clubs, Mrs. Phyllis Hartwell in the Sr. High and Miss Joyce Taulker in the Jr. High, were actively involved in the planning of their clubs’ projects. To help school spirit along, Flyer ‘stop signs” were sold by the Jr. High club and “I Believe” buttons, designed by Mrs. Hartwell, were sold by the Sr. High club. The Snoopy “image’’ was boosted by the sale of the “I Believe” buttons, and asa result, the chant, “We Believe!” became a popular and suc- cessful spirit booster at basketball games. This group, boasting an increased member- ship of 18, began practicing in Septem- ber in order to perfect several intricate dance routines for performance during the basketball season. This group also proved their talents by helping to choreograph and execute several different dance routines in the choir’s production of “Oklahoma”’. The Flyerettes, through many hours of practice, have been able to perform successfully, and, in doing so, have won the respect of the student body and the community. Vibrant Twirls, Snappy Salutes After performing in high-stepping half-time programs during football season, the Senior Band members set- tled down to prepare for the concert season. A spring concert, which Mr. Wid- dowson described as a “musical ban- quet,”” was presented in the high school on April 26th. The first half of this concert included selections of many different musical styles which were presented by the Freshman and Senior Bands, and, as an extra fea- ture, a piano solo by Robert Ham- mond. The theme of the second half of this concert was “We Will Remem- ber,” a patriotic 50th year program on World War I which featured selec- tions by the Sr. Band, a dixie-land combo, vocal solos and duets, a song- and-dance routine, piano solos, and an audience sing-along. An important goal for this year’s band members was working toward the upcoming tri-annual band trip, which was a three-day excursion to Cincinnati’s Coney Island. For this occasion, a uniform which featured a royal blue blazer with a specially de- signed insignia, was worn by all band members. iyi Tt eal j Kneeling: L. Shaw, J. Marchetto. Miss Dorothy Gebauer, full- time librarian for the senior high, has operated the library with effi- ciency. She has not only revised the operation of the library, but she has used her imagination and in- genuity in creating artistic displays to decorate it.
