Though plagued by poor communications caused by the abolition of homerooms and a variety of other problems due to the splitting of the campus, Student Council plowed their way through these barriers and those of general apathy in an attempt to air the views of the student body. Included in the bills passed this year were a new exam exemption concept; a course auditing recommendation; a suggestion to form a committee with a number of student members to re- view all non-tenure teachers before they ' re rehired; and several open campus - free movement bills. The new student body constitution was approved this year, after almost two years of work, by the student council, the administration, and the student body. Again this year Student Council sponsored the highly successful Activity Day, a day in which regular classes were suspended and students instead attended a vari- ety of self-initiated, unique, educational activities. The new four page Large Size Forest Scout began with the February 25th issue. The Forest Scout staff under the leadership of Mindy Beck changed the paper from the magazine to more of a newspaper ■ type paper. The Forest Scout now carries commercial and want ads. This has been a goal for a long time. It will help the paper become more professional and closer to the staff ' s goal of being self-supporting. Also the staff ' s work area was moved to its present well lit quarters, the old audio- visual room. And finally the Des Plaines Publishing Co. now prints the Big Newspaper for a Big School. Forest Scout Editor Mindy Beck YOUNG IDEA This year Young Idea changed its format from the traditional bound edition to a portfolio idea; loose pages fitted into a pocket in a portfolio. For the first time two or three large foldout sheets and photography were added to the magazine which included the traditional art work and block-printed cover design. As another first, nine professional people from the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff area consented to serve as judges for the ' 72 edition. These judges were from the fields of writing, photography, and art; and they selected two winners in the four areas of competition. Prize of S10.00 and S5.00 were given in three areas, with a Si 5.00 award for cover de- sign. Advisors - D. S. Orput Jackura Back Row : Diane Eby, Debbie Conway, Mindy Mullin. DEBATE CLUB The first president of Debate Club was a girl. 1971-72 saw another girl as president - Megan Overby, who had held the office of secretary the year before. Three varsity members had attended summer workshops, so they led the training of new novices. Lake Forest teams have won such a fine reputation in the last few years that our school is invited to the best tourneys in the state. The membership in the Suburban Interscholastic Debate League assures the stiffest challenge on the North Shore. LETTERMAN S CLUB Again this year, Letterman ' s Club provided a variety of services to the school, which included ushering at all drama productions, assist- ing at basketball games, and helping with the intramural activities. Members of the club also sold programs at home football games to earn money which will be used to finance a long range project ■ the purchasing of a video tape machine for exclusive use by the athletic department. Last year marked the culmination of the payments on the last big project the club undertook - the purchase of a weight- training machine. Officers (left to right) Jeff Whii Scott Mohr. , Randy Kurek. Activities began in October with three playlets for children. These were original manuscripts by students. The performances were so successful that plays were prepared on a Christmas theme. Drama members of the Performers ' Bureau gave special programs for children at Lake Forest Library and before civic groups. CLAW ' S goal is to achieve what their name stands for - Clean Land Air and Water - through positive environmental action. CLAW organized paper, glass, and can recycling, and street and beach clean-ups throughout the year. They applied political pressure to dis- solve the Lake Forest Mosquito Abatement District. Another goal of the organization is to educate the community on matters concerning the environment through speakers and movies. CHESS CLUB Few students realized that every Wednesday afternoon this past year in room 106 (west) potential Bobby Fischers were plotting the moves at the LFHS Chess Club. Mr. Ruswick sponsored this bright, eager club composed entirely of sophomores aspiring to play in the National Championship in New York. Paired against tough competition, the Chess Club honorably acpuited it- self by finishing 7th in the Illinois State HS Championship. Front Row: David Haan, Mike McGrath, Ralph, Foster Vail. They are trying to join a national Math association and to carry on com petition with other schools. The club also published several math journals this year. COMPUTER SCIENCE CLUB The Computer Science Club is an informal group of students who are interested in computers and want to learn more about how they are used today. Mainly a field trip club, we have taken a tour of the Lake Forest College computer facility, and a trip to I.B.M. in Chicago has been arranged for Activity Day. We have been trying to become a member of a national computer club organization so that we can obtain in- formation about field trips, films, and other interesting activities. We also hope to visit the computer instal- lations at ASC and Great Lakes before the end of the school year. This year the small but efficient stage crew took on the most complex sets in recent years. For The Fantasticks they built a new stage over the orchestra pit as well as tilting a large platform off the edge of the permanent stage. The Man Who Came to Dinner came to their elaborate realistic interior, complete with wall trim and hand-stenciled gold leaf wallpaper. Their hard work was exceeded perhaps only by their extensive vocabularies. Under the direction of Brad Balonick, the new Student Technical Director, this year ' s lighting crew moved out of their Light House to immediatley put up a new light bar right in the middle of the auditorium. And this year three crew members, after setting up the footlights, stepped over to become actors in various productions; several more earned money for their creative lighting effects in var- ious efforts. The goal of the sound crew has been to provide the best sound sys- tem possible with the available equipment. Not only have they pro- vided the systems for the various productions, meetings, and events, but they also do a major part of the sound equipment main- tenance. The caption We ' ll Moo-sey over and churn ' em up! on their homecoming float captured first prize for them. FTA went on to have bake sales, workshops, and their biggest pro- ject of the year - a spaghetti dinner. They split the proceedswith the Junior Class. Co-presidents Tom Pratt and Omar Myers brought in such superior talent as Happy Day and R.E.O. Speed- wagon . These proved very popular. Another large effort on the part of the co-presidents was the performance of Livingston Taylor on March 26th in the Raymond Moore Auditorium. The club also tries to help the foreign students to adjust to LFHS and to enjoy their stay. Some of the events the club has held this year include a Christmas party, AFS weekend, and a Pizza Sale to raise money. SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club is designed to enable its members to become more involved in science and to re- alize career possibilities. This is done through films, guest speakers, and field trips. The regional science fairs in the spring are a major project for interested members as was a trip to Argonne Na- tional Laboratories. 128 -Jfi ' • J t FOTO CLUB The FOTO Club consists of about a dozen beginning and advanced student photographers. The goal of this club is to teach and im- prove each member ' s photography skills. The members develop and print their own black and white pictures in the club ' s dark- room. A good part of the photos in this yearbook were taken by FOTO Club members. A field trip was taken by those interested in taking pictures for the club ' s contest. While recognizing no formal offices or rules, the Art Club pro- vided an opportunity for serious art students to work on inde- pendent projects. Instruction was available to those who de- sired it. This group met every Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00. The late hour proved successful in narrowing down the membership to those sincerely interested in developing their skills. RIFLE CLUB Rifle Club was organized this year to give interested stu- dents a chance to learn about rifles and pistols, and to pro- mote the safe and enjoyable use of these firearms. The club met every Saturday morning. A rifle team was organ- ized for the first time in a few years. The team competed against Waukegan ' s ROTC J.V. team and won the meet 943 to 942 The club extends its appreciation and thanks to Herb Sphor, an ex-marine from Skokie, for his time and effort given to them. Back Row: Martin Smith, Joe Huss, Eric Hallowell. Front Row: Holly Dujiye, Darcy Sawie, Nancy Ackermann. SKI CLUB The object of having a ski club is to unite those students who have a common interest in skiing. Before the snow flies, the club has numerous ski flicks produced by Hart, K2, etc. Once the season starts, the skiers organize ski trips such as the one to Wilmot on Activity Day, and independent spring trips to Breckenridgeand J Jackson Hole. This year they added a new activity - team racing. The Ski Club also scheduled races with Barrington and Hersey High Schools. This type of Competition adds excitement to the club ' s activities. Ski Club Officers (Left to right) : Jeff Bonk, Cornelia Bowman, Mark Williams, Bruce Juhl, President. PEP CLUB The main activity of the Pep Club is the Homecoming Dance. This year ' s dance was a success and in order for the dance next year to be just as successful, the Club spent the latter part of this year raising money by selling stationery and having a Spring Fair. The goal of Pep Club and all its members is to raise the spirit of the school. Pep Club Officers: Back Row : Pam Sage, Nelli Long, Karen Sells. Front Row: Wendy Woroch, Missy Emma. President : Tori Wozniak. CINEMATOGRAPHY CLUB Cinematography Club was relatively inactive this year. The club was originally organized for students who were interested in film-making. Students learned how to make their own films, how to edit them and how to put them to sound sound. A happy Franny Myies was crowned queen during half-time festivities at our victorious game. This year, for the first time, a trophy was awarded for the best decorated window uptown, which went to Drama Club. The juniors took the trophy for best class float, with the slogan, Sea of ' 73--They Missed the Ship of Victory . A large crowd enjoyed the dance where wanted posters of the football players decorated the gym. FANTASTICKS A CHRISTMAS BALL DE RERUM NATURA The theme of the Orchesis Club ' s annual show was Fire, Water, Air and Earth - de Re- rum Natura . It proved to be an outstanding show with original costumes and dance numbers. Nancy Goetz, Presi- dent of Orchesis and all of the members worked hard to make the show a success. IMAGINE The members of the Girls ' Gymnas- tics Club outdid themselves this year with the show Imagine ' . VARSITY FOOTBALL The Scouts, after losing a preseason game to Mundelein and their opening game to Lake Zurich, came back to win their next five games. Having established a 5-1 record in conference play, they faced undefeated Warren in their last game. A victory would bring the Scouts to a tie with Warr en for the conference championship. But injuries sustained in previous games by starters Jim McGonagle, Mike Burns, and Jim Townsend, along with the loss of Ken Olufs in the first few minutes of the Warren game proved to be too much for the Scouts to overcome. They lost to Warren 22-8 and had to settle for third place in the conference. Ken Olufs and Scott Mohr, however, were named all-conference and all county in their positions, providing two bright spots in the Scouts ' season record. INDEX r- A Word About the Index It is interesting to note how many times a single name appears in the index. For example, Anderson or Andersen is listed twelve times; Burns is found eleven times; and Hanson or Hansen appears ten times. In addition, two of the eleven Johnsons that are listed are named Tom. So when using the index keep the above facts in mind. Remember too that there were 1 672 students at Lake Forest High School this year, and there are 1 92 pages in this book.
