This is an accomplishment of the 1955 Lake Forest lacrosse team, but hardly the only one. Coach Wayne Braxton's squad rolled up a T-2 overall record. and 5-1 in the Great Lakes Con- ference. They went 3-1 in the prestigious Suncoast Tourna- ment in Florida, losing only in overtime to Eastern power Ithaca. The Foresters also claimed RPI, Haverford, and Wooster among their other victims. The 1985 squad also could claim some impressive players. lN1idfielder Mark Talgo became the Foresters' all time point scorer, with 147 hard-earned points. He also made the first- teain All Conference squad. Midfielder Eric Jensen, attack- man Nick Risom, defenseman Andy Hamblett, and goalie Ralph Kunzmann all were awarded second-team All- Conference honors. The fine crop of seniors left holes for Coach Braxton to fill, but they also left a winning legacy, which never comes - or stays - easily. This was truly a fine team, as was evidenced by vociferous and large crowds the team attracted all year. The ability to stimulate such excitement for athletics on campus is rare. The fact thatthe squad coulddo so is testimony enough that this was indeed a special team, on and off the field. . V ,.r - 'Qi' J -. ff- ,. I ' 'ft' ., i' ' - I . . The vi-tci'an defense, led by some of the most vicious headhunters this side nl' New Guinea, gave up only 14 points a frame, inter- cepted lti passes, sacked oppos- ing quarterbacks 27 times, and nailed assorted running backs and wide receivers with hurri- cane-force hits. On offense, the Foresters boasted a big and tough offensive line, a varied and potent aerial attack, hard- running backs, and solid kick- ing. All this would seem to add up to more than a 5-4 record and a third place in the tied in the MVAC North, but that's what happened. The reason for this lies not in the skill and desire of the players - which was un- doubted- but rather in a very tough conference, and a few had bounces. The Foresters lost 4 conference games by a total of 232 points. Give a few.of the breaks that St. Norbert and archrival Beloit got to the Foresters, and this could have been a championship team. There was definitely champi- onship talent here. .lust among the seniors, wide receiver Colin Lundgren finished among the leaders in receiving: in NCAA Ill, with EP-17 yards and 9 TD's. Defensive end Peter Dauk had ST tackles and T sacks - and one safety. Defensive back Larry Malles had 6 inter- ceptions, and All-MCAt', as Safety Norm powerful tackles and 6 inter- ceptions. Mike Olsen kicked 5 field goals, 13 extra points, had 46 tackles, and 2 interceptions. These seniors and their talented classmates will be difficult to replace, both in talent and leadership. The tortoise is the ll-T-1 start that seemed to presage a season of suffering on the ice for the usually successful squad. Injuries, inexperience, and a brutal schedule were the primary culprits in the early problems. and after a fourth place finish at the Dearborn Tournament, the tortoise was moving slowly towards what looked like a miserable finish. Then, the latent hare showed itself as the Foresters ripped off a fi-1-l record in their 8 games before the date of this report. The eoaltending ofGary Willett and Ralph Kunzmann improved markedly, the offense started to produce goals in plentiful numbers, and a veteran defensive unit led by the captains .Iohn Flahive and Tim Iiockc tightened up and began to lower the boom on some unfortunate opponents. The Foresters dumped St. Mary'slMinn.J and UW-Stevens Point in December, forced a tie against FW-River Falls after two previous losses to them, and then avenged two early defeats against Kent State by trouncingf the Golden Flashes twice in late January on the road. It would have been easy for the team to lay down and quit after the poor start. They did not, which is a tribute both to Coach Tony Fritz's motivation- al skills and the perserverance and pride of this squad. Possi- bly not the most talented or successful team in Forester hockey history, this team might be among the euttiest of the bunch. And that. surely, is not such a bad way to remember the 1985-159843 ice hockey team. 92 I f 9 . - - ll'll'li Q .' , ': 'gl ' Tse i , : QU , K 5 'EU WUI xl!! gill I-ll Back Row: Coach Fritz, Wilford, Norton, Kelly, Steen, Gibbons, Richards, Currie, Coach Widmark. The best was a 4-U start, led by seniors Dave Czeszewski and Chris Stenzel, and a late come back with wins over Coe and Grinnell. This was a good team, with plenty of team spirit and aggressiveness. Special thanks to Gordon White for his much needed advice. Publishing Representative: Morris Ferensen As I sit down to write this message the day before our final deadline, my eyes are tired from sifting through piles of pictures, deciphering sometimes illegible copy and endlessly designing layouts. The hours upon hours I've spent in the yearbook office this year now seem worthwhile as the book nears completion and will soon be in its final form. Though we try to represent the whole school year in this book, there is truly no way that we can record all the events, people and activities you would all like to remember. Certain events have been pictured and our own memories will help us to fill in the specific details and faces that are meaningful to us. I'd like to thank Rob, Rick, Karen and the rest of the yearbook staff for hav- ing the photographs and copy ready when needed, and for their time spent working on the book. I hope our efforts have been successful in creating a yearbook that will be enjoyed and appreciated. Ellen Schwarzbach f. .1 SE' .M . .J N V an .1 , n v W . .M .
