I am your friend and my love for you goes deep. There is nothing I can give you which you have not, but there is much, very much, that while I cannot give it you can take. No heaven can come to us unless our heart find rest in it today. Take Heaven! No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in the present little instant. Take peace! The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it yet within our reach is joy. . .Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by their covering, cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Re- move the covering and you will find be- neath it a living splendor, woven of Love, by Wisdom, with Power . . . K Un- .6 - 'e -an A- 'E meaning gd you will find thag ach but cloaks your heaven. Couragetihen, to claim itg that is all! But courage you haveg and the knowledge that we are pilgrims together, wending through unknown country Home. And so, at this time, I greet youg not quite as the world sends greetings but with profound esteem, and with the prayer that for you, now and forever, the Day breaks and shadows flee away. S Letter, 1515 Fra Giovanni Friendship is seldom lasting but between equals. . . Benefits which cannot be repaid and obligations which cannot be discharged are not commonly found to increase affection, they excite gratitude indeed and heighten veneration, but commonly take away that easy free- dom and familiarity . . . without which . . .there cannot be friend- ship. Samuel Johnson The Rambler, No. 64 This book is dedicated to Eddie von der Linde, Mark Nickerson, Bill Clarke, Brian Feeney, Denise Tumbarello, Todd Pfister, and Woody Price for their help and support over the past year. As Board editors they made contributions, in their respective departments, which gave birth and personality to the 1980 Forester. This book is also dedicated to Rebecca Konstan tinidis for answering nasty phone calls, putting up with me and the yearbook, and just being my room- mate for all four years. Coming from a pre- vious year's Divisional Championship, a healthy re- cruiting season, and an overall enthusiasm rarely seen, things seemed promising indeed. This season opened up against the Ripon Redmen, last year's Conference champs. Our Foresters played a hard encouraging game losing narrowly in the last few minutes. From there, the season was not in the Forester favor. A decisive loss to Lawrence, frus- trating defeats to the hands of Knox, Carleton, and Grinnel, knocked L.F.C. out of league contention. Key injuries to Quarterback Frank Melch, Fullback Pete Magrini, and Linebacker Bart Tiernan spelled doom for the Big Red. Individual, influential per- formances were evident by Defensive backs Phil Lombardo and Steve Savage, Offensive back Johnnyjoyce and Kenny jones, Defensive linemen Steve Sullivan, Rick Kaiser, Tom Wessel and Bob Winikates, Offensive linemen Marty Michaelson, Ed Pluchar, jeff Lukas, Ray Hagen, and Lineback- ers jim Brady and Nick Troiano. These players were instrumental in the Foresters' wins over Chi- cago, Marquette, and Beloit. 56 ' . Q ' 1 q. . 'N 4 . 'QQ -B ll my ,.g IJ, kg JL if - f- V -U --x-. -r, .v , ,af . , . ! They started the season slowly, losing the opener to Rockford Col- lege and then after defeating Trinity College in a very close game, lost again to Northern Illinois University. The team's coordination later impoved as the players grew accustomed to each other. Play- ing with intensity, they went on to win the next six games of the regular season, while tieing the last two. Coach Fritz put together a very good team both defensively and offensively. The starting line- up was made up ofveteransjon Hagenstein, Barry Jacobson, Adrian Moreno, Charlie Cresine, Greg Pearson, Larry Dohrs, and Dan Burns. They were joined by an outstanding freshman squad. The young team will be minus senior Hagenstein next year. 58 l gf- .M l- . jg ' 5, 2 . in -.--Q - ...dns .-,,- ' .ff ,- Q' -5 4, .- V 0 -g x .fffff Veteran players Francois Harvey, Dennis Drolet, both juniors, and sophomore Bob Martin were joined during the 1979-80 season by freshmen Steve Kaiser and Chris Roberts. On the first day, while parents at- tended the Presidents Reception, students gathered with their classmates, residence staff, and orientation leaders. The evening began with a Presidents Banquet and an introductory lecture by Associate Professor Charles Behl- ing. In the next three days, students participa- ted in other activities by the Orientation Plan- ning Board. Scheduled, fun-filled events in- cluded activity and academic fairs, barbecue dinners, a theatre production, and the movie 'AAuntie Mamef' Orientation gave new stu- dents a sample of life at Lake Forest College. The play, Pirandello's greatest achievement, is considered a landmark of our time and was largely responsible for the playwrights Nobel Prize in 1934. In the opening scene a rehearsal of one of Pirandello's earlier plays is interrupted by the sudden appearance of six people. Obviously a family, who tells the theatre di- rector that they are looking for an author to dramatize their story. They say that they are characters, conceived, some of them only partially, by an author who has aban- doned them and left them on their own without a finished drama to contain them. The strangers insist that the drama is in them and cannot by acted in the conven- tional sense. By their obsessive strength of will, the six characters and Madam Pace manage to piece together their story bit by bit, taking possession of the stage. In all of his plays, Pirandello inverts the convention of treating the stage as a living room, insisting that it is really a stage. The six characters claim that since they are embodied in a work of art, they have an eternal existence along with Falstaff and Hamlet. They further claim the director and his actors, the supposedly 'real' people have no reality beyond the shifting present mo- ment. Pirandello's theatre has been called i1teatro dello spec- chio or mirror theatre. At first this philosophical mirror world tends to confuse us. Before long, we are not only aware of ideas but ofgreat human suffering. 124 - I iiqtxc CAST: The Stage Manager- Karin Triivisg The Aetress - Mernie- yiine Ttinnerg The Technician - Bruce NXf.igenhurg1 Thejuvenile - Erie Stcivitekg The Lending Man - Bnh Freehlinlug The Snikuehdriti - Kathy Richmuntlg The Elettrician - M41rtyHeitzgTheDirettiir - Kenny Bernsteing The I.e.1ding L.idy - Ruhin Z.1th.irig The Scene Shifter - Lorraine Cope. Steering a successful course depends upon many stimuli: weather, wind, morale of the crew and understanding of the sponsors. While directing the ship frornanark to mark, the captain and crew members must overcome adverse conditions in order to arrive at the predestined port. However, on clear days, the ship progresses at a rapid pace. The Forerter encountered many fruitful ports during its journey. I would like to especially thank Kathy Bridges, Marijojohannsen, Helene Lewis, George Longo, Wayne Doleski, Physical Plant, the students, the faculty, and most importantly, Morris Ferensen, our publishing representative, without whom this book would not have reached its destination. 'gp-nm-ml-ms if-U Q3 - Douglas Kent Churchill - is I stand up here and look out upon all of you I can't elp but wonder why? Why is a big question that will go 'oth unsolved and unanswered, It is ironic for while we onder this question the word itself was never used by Douglas Kent Churchill. Doug was too far advanced to ver question anything. I-Ie knew what had to be, and djusted his life accordingly, striving to achieve xcellence in everything he did. The concept enemy was onexistent in his mindg in fact, he couldn't even begin 3 understand the idea. i man realizes once in a lifetime perhaps what life really leans. It is not what you achieve and accomplish but ather what you never see. We have all learned a bit more about life at someone else's expense, but the ppreciation we've gained is immeasurable. Doug will Jok down upon us and expect us to live on with his rest interests in tact, and God willing, we will. Doug set n example that is very hard to achieve. The ironic thing : that he didn't even try to. I-Iis life was our lives and te all played our part in shaping his surrounding. But he lways went one step further, often committing verything he had to others, leaving very little for imself. On behalf of the Lake Forest College ommunity I feel confident in saying, We have lost a artnet. Not just a fellow student, but a partner. In 'iendship, in school, and in reality we have lost one that till be very hard to replace. 1958-1979 Doug would be mad at me for saying all of this, but thats the way he was. In his mind your life came iirst and his second. This was truly a person who gave all and took none. We can only be thankful for the gladness he gave us and the way he touched upon .tll he came in Contact with. We can only hope and wish that our lives can touch upon and heighten the spirits til' as many as Doug has. I pray that Doug's memory will live with us in a happy and fulfilling way, The lessons learned are very important and we must carry on to others what he did for us. The person next to you is your friend and needs your help. You must do what you can to see that he is happy. This is what Doug would want so lelis not let him down. Doug did his duty for mankind and, sadly enough he lias been granted entry to heaven before all of us. ln Conclusion I would like to refer you to a line by Billy joel, Billy said that only the good die young. However, I would like to change this a little. Doug. wherever you are, we know that only the best the young, Thank you for everything, Doug. I would ask that all of you ioin me in a moment ul- silence at this time to retlect upon Dongs life .ts ss ell as our own. Thank you. Chris Geert ,-. ,,,. -L bf if 'wLI.'i ' All my life's a circle.
