V -Y Q LJ A The First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest If the question now is asked, l-low did it come about that There ever was such a place as Lake Forest? the stones at The Lake Forest Church may cry out and say, We can give you the answer. Then those stones, if allowed Ta speak, will Tell how when they were originally built into the structure of The Second Presbyterian Church ot Chicago, standing on The corner of Wabash Avenue and Washington Street, meeting after meeting used To be held within their walls To consider what could be done to advance Christ's interests in The North- west Through The purchase of a Town site, The erection of homes and The creation of an educational center. Here we stand, These stones may proceed to say, aT The very heart of Lake Forest. We deserve to stand here. Within us The whole idea ot Lake Forest was pondered, prayed over and de- veloped. And Then These stones may add, We look upon our history as most interesting. Previous to The great Chicago fire of 1871 people, calling us 'The Spotted Church,' and see- ing The black oil oozing out of us, used to say, 'lf ever There comes a Terrible fire, These stones will go up in smake.' But we passed Through The great tire absolutely uniniured, and Though every building about us was destroyed and all our in- terior construction was consumed, we remained as erect and sound after The Tire as before. Everybody remarked as they saw us, 'Look at the walls of The Spotted Church! ls it not amazing that those oilyx stones did not burn?' 5 Nor are those stones willing to resume their wanted silence until they have further declared, that when they were To be Taken down from the walls they were purchased Tor The pur- pose ot building a church at Winnetka, where they rernafned, near the steam railway track, Tor years, that then they were purchased again, tor the purpose of building a house on the bluff at Lake Forest lnear Mr. Alfred L. Bakers, where, atte' being dressed, they remained a few years longer: and that then they were purchased once more, This time To be worked again into a church, within which children and childrens chl- dren at the original Chicago congregation now worship, Nor can these stones be silenced until they are allowed To say one additional word, namely, 'lt was wEthin us that ai The preliminary action took place whereby a plan To buy The site ot the present Lake Forest, erect its parks, create its edu- cational institutions and organize its lite was eFTecTed .... -Pastor James G. K. McClure, History of the Presbyterian Church, 1905 .ivlifffili N' G ...Q Q. N 3 4 :.lf'.l 1 in V9 il' Drs. Patterson and Curtis went prospecting on all the roads leading out from Chicago, One day they came out on the North-Western Railway, and persuaded the conductor to stop and let them oft opposite where the McCormick farm now lies. They struck through to the lake, were surprised and delighted, first at the deep ravines, and even more at the high blufts on the lake front, and so located a site, The land company bought l,3OO acres, now covered by Lake Forest, and set oFl, torever, the present College, Seminary and Institute parks. The remaining acres were divided half and halt, between the University and the land company, The tovvn vvas platted and laid out by a landscape gardener that sumrner . . . -John J. Halsey History of the University The Forester, vol. l, 1892 6 A. 1 4.- Hxz WQZLJQ ' a-','Ti:w.t.i 5.6. . t if . Ski It seems undisputed that the origin of the name is due to a remark made by the Rev. Mr. Slocum. He was standing with several others, upon the bluff near Mr. R. H. lvlcElwee's and Mrs. C. B. Farwell's, discussing a fitting name for the place. Look here, gentlemen, he said, What is this before us? A lake, they an- swered. 'fAnd what is this behind us? A for- est, they answered. Pointing with his hand to the lake, and then to the forest, he said, What better name can we have than 'Lake Forest'? The suggestion was so satisfactory that one and another in a properly religious way said Amen. -Pastor James G. K. McClure History of the Presbyterian Church, 'I905 , . Jim Anderson's Store 7 Lake Forest is known today as one of the most beautiful suburban towns in the country, Its ad- vantageous situation on the blutts, a hund'e:3 feet above Lake Michigan, is enhanced by the great forest of oaks and hickories that has been preserved, and amid which the hcrres a'e placed. The winding streets are all paved, but to a width of only eighteen or twenty feet . . , As few fences intervene, the result is that the whole town presents a park-like effect. in the midst of this forest park are the beautiful horhes. occupying from one to fifty acres. in the suv'-M of i909 the dust problem was sclxed by c licg or tarring all the roadways of the town. -John J. SX Evie Conway suggests an improvement - The Tutorial Project . . . The school year 1963-64 saw the birth cmd the first few unsteady steps of the Tutorial Project. From an uncertain, but eager beginning the Tutorial Project slowly attempted to establish itself as a part of the total student life of the College and as a part of the . educational, cultural, and social life of its young tutees. Rapidly expanding from the original six tutoring sites in the Waukegan School System, the Project hastily added three additional tutoring sites at Chicago Set- tlement Houses. From these somewhat meager begin- nings the Project entered into its first full school year C1964-657. Heartened by its initial success, its student directors made plans to start the new year off with a bang, as it were. The leaders Uane Fernald and Charles Wil- liams, co-chairmen, Paul Wilson, Treasurer, Karen Scheingold and Sara Friedman, secretariesl, with a watchful eye on the present and an anxious eye toward the future, ploughed ahead with not so reckless abandon. September of 1964 yielded a substantial increase in the number of tutors. With increased acceptance on the part of the Waukegan School Board, and with in- creased awareness on the part of the students, the Project sunk its roots deeper into the paved school- yards of Waukegan. The Project received a helpful boost when the Ex- change Club of Waukegan offered to donate a substantial amount of money. The second term of this year has seen even further development of the Project. Six students were selected to participate in a special pilot cultural enrichment program, where the emphasis is not placed on the academic life of the children involved, but rather, on introducing the children to the world that exists out- side the ghetto. Any, and all accomplishments which the Tutorial Proj- ect has been able to make have been the product of hard work on the part of many, many interested people: tutors, the Waukegan principals, and many more. Without their help and encouragement the Project would never have matured. Dr. Lucius H, Pitts, the President of Miles College, Alabama, spoke at a chapel, point- ing out that Miles is the only four-year school available to most of the 2,000 negro high school graduates in the area. His talk prompts ed LFC students to ask what they could do tc help. As a result, more than, 2,000 books were collected by the students and faculty of LFC and sent to the College. During the summer several Lake Forest students participated in a tutorial proiect at Miles, working with high school, grade school, and college students. T 0- . ,. This was a second look at concepts introduced in the T963 conference, The Crises in Race Relations. The conference was sponsored by the Religious Activities Federation in cooperation with the Community Government Association. On Saturday, former Governor Ross Barnett, of Missis- sippi, gave a tele-lecture on civil rights which was tol- lowed by questions from the audience. Afterwards, a panel discussed the Mississippi summer proiect. Problems, ex- periences, and general discussions provided for an in- teresting evening. The Friday morning keynote speaker was Dr. Gayraud S. Wilmore, ir., Executive Secretary ot the United Presby- terian Church's Commission on Religion and Race. A second Negro leader, Dr, Nathan A. Scott, ir., Protesser at Theolo- gy and Literature at the University of Chicago's Divinity School, discussed work of outstanding Negro writers on Friday evening. Tom Peckham, acting President of the RAF, along with Richard Buehler, chairman of the fall conference, Charles IliFf, and Donovan Smucker composed the executive com- mittee for the two days of activity. av. 1 1 1 I fWffff1!, f7U fl :J X I-.
