ILLINOIS Ojzce of the President A college year-book is a curious combination of historical record and collective senti- ment. In years to come, this volume will be lifted from many a shelf as a stimulus to the memory and as a stirrer of the affections. All of the official data is here, the senior pictures, the group photographs, the year's special events. And yet no book could possibly gather up all of the memories, all of the experiences of a college community from September 1961 to June 1962. Those are stored in over a thousand heads, filed away in billions of brain cells, some probably lost beyond recall. But the Forester will in days ahead open the filing cabinets of the memory and bring forth rich and happy recollections. There will doubtless be a fair share of the unhappy and the regretful as well, but the years do lend perspective and we hope that the long view will be pleasant and nostalgic. So though I write these words to you now as undergraduates, I know that I write them also to you across the valleys of the future. If in these college years you have developed habits of careful thought and rational analysis, if you have cultivated an aesthetic taste and have sharpened your sense of moral and religious values, if you keep these tools acquir- ed here in constant use as mature and reponsible citizens of sense and sensibility, then your stayuat Lake Forest College will have been a rich and rewarding experience and each time, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, that you open this volume, I greet you as friend and fellow student! Both girls were active members of the Inter- national Relations Club, and they helped to organize it as charter members. Catharina was an enthusiastic member of the ski trip to Brule Mountain. Agnete thoroughly enjoyed the ice skating at the Bath and Tennis Club. After Catharina and Agnete return to their homes, they will begin their university edu- cation respectively at Stockholm and Copen- hagen Universities. Neither girl will receive academic credit for their year's study at Lake Forest College, but both girls feel their year's experience is reward enough in itself. All the L. F. C. students wish Catharina and Agnete good fortune in their future stu- dies. L. F. C. has enjoyed and profited from their sojourn here and looks forward to hav- ing more students from the Institute of Inter- national Education. N, U. 1. This year Lake Forest College had the distinction of participating in an internation- al student exchange program directed by the Institute of International Education. The In- stitute endeavors to promote international understanding through student exchange pro- grams in which students live and study at a university in a country foreign to their own. Two students from Scandinavia who desired to study for one year in the United States were directed to Lake Forest College by the Institute. Alpha Xi Delta Pre-Alum Group This year the Alpha Xi Deltas were under the leadership of Anne Dearborn, pres- identg Anita Klausmier, vice-presidentg Barbara Boyd, treasurerg Cathy Dravilis, secre- tary. During the early fall this group assumed the unique status of pre-alum group. Despite this decision not to remain a perpetuating organization, they have continued to meet and carry on group activities. Just before Thanksgiving a dinner party was held. Our loyal alums were invited and among those attending was Jackie Bingert, Miss Illinois of 1961. Other group acti- vities include a Christmas party and Theatre Party. Our club members are active in va1'ious campus activities: Garrick Players and Al- pha Psi Omega, Religious Activities Federation, Careers Day, Homecoming, and Va- riety Show. F74- Front row: B. Traveling even further in our history, our sorority was first a local called Gamma Rho Delta. This sorority, which became interested in joining a national sorority, sought and selected carefully that one which represented their highest goals and principles. Chi Omega was chosen. On becoming a local, Chi Omega Chi aspires towards maintaining these same hopes and ideals. On November 6, 1961, Chi Omega Chi received its charter from the state of Illinois. The purposes for which the sorority is organized are to promote high scholastic, social, and intellectual standards in our sorority women. The officers of this organization for the '61- '62 year are: president, Sally Orr, vice-president, Diane Jefferson, secretary, Edie Larson, treasurer, Nancy Anderson, and pledge trainer, Karen Ekstrand. Some active girls recognized this year are these: Diane Jefferson was chosen captain of the cheerleading squad and received a write up in the Tribune and local papers. Diane Jef- ferson and Marty Smith were both chosen of the LFC women to represent the college in last August's issue of Mademoiselle magazine. Anne Martin and Sally Orr are both presi- dents of their respective dormitories. Anne Martin was also given the lead in The Lark. On the varsity tennis team were Patty Raynor and Margo Weaver. Those frosh guilty of misdemeanors were prose- cuted and brought to justice by Steve Brock and Judge Jim Murphy with Bennett Greenwald acting for defense. The fate of beanie wearing was decided on Saturday afternoon, and at first things were grim for the fresh- men. Someone had kidnapped the beanie pole, but it was returned in time for the grease pole contest. The beanie, despite the valiant efforts of the freshmen, remained aloft the pole. The tug-of-war brought an im- partial drenching to all participants, frosh and sophomore alike. Victory, however wet it was, belonged to the freshmen women, and they emanci- pated their class from the beanie. The weekend closed in peace and friendship in the Institute at the dance given by the Sophomore Class in hon- or ofthe Class of 1965. 1' vo, e H r. - 5 2,f-- .K ..l, 'H Tf fv'f A , img, . Mardi Gras 1 961 Homecoming After a summer of planning, the Homecoming Committee was busy at work as soon as the term began. Since Homecoming, October 13 and 14, arrived less then three weeks after classes began, there was no time to lose in getting floats from ideas on paper to masterpieces of wire and crepe paper, in selecting queen candidates and making posters. Mardi Gras was the theme of Homecoming 1961. Friday night the festive weekend began with a pep rally held on Commons patio, at which time Lee Nichols was crowned Queen. Alumni began registering in Lois Rec. Room early on Saturday morning. An added event of Homecoming was the ground breaking cere- mony for the Student Union which was held Saturday morning before the parade. The tra- ditional parade of Mardi Gras floats began at noon on Middle Campus and made its way through town to Farewell Field for the Homecoming game against Carroll which unfortu- nately we lost. The Institute, Saturday night, was transformed into the 'carnival site of a Mardi Gras for the annual Homecoming Dance. The climax of the weekend was the announcement of the Homecoming Sweepstake awards. Tau Kappa Epsilon carried off the high honors of the Sweepstake trophy, but Phi Delta Theta, the winner of the float trophy, was not to be out done. -125- - F e Pep Rally ' Queen Cro ufning -YF Ground Breaking Marching Band X.. This was the day LFC hosted the dear folks from home. Phyllis Adamson and the Parents' Day Committee had planned a fullday for the campus visitors. The coffee hour in the Institute followed registration, this was the time for instructor and parents to meet for our better or our worse. Next, our par- ents viewed Mc Cormick Auditorium and heard an address from Dr. Cole about the nature of Liberal Arts education at LFC. There was lunch at Commons, when Mo- ther and Father, too, had to stand in line for their meal. The afternoon football game was a wet one, but a few spirited parents did bear with the unfavorable weather. The reception for parents given by Dr. Cole in his home, dinner at Commons, and an evening program of student talent in the Institute concluded the day. Campus Cultural Activities were many and appealed to a wide variety of interests. The completion of Mc Cormick Auditorium in Johnson Science Center provided a much needed and suitable site for campus lectures. The College-Community Program under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Winter presented many outstanding speakers from both on and off campus. Among the off campus lectures were Mark Bonham Carter who spoke on British liberalism, Charles Hogan who gave the United Nations Day address, Gwendolyn Brooks who gave a reading of her poems, and Allan Watts who lectured on Zen. The College-Community Pro- gram also sponsored a series of seminars consisting of four lectures given by members of the faculty: Drs. Cole, Sharvy, Tomashevich and Pese. In addition, the lecture calendar included a Thursday night lecture series given by members of the faculty. A few of these lectures were Teaching Machines by Dr. Reichert, The Political Novel by Dr. Milne, and The Teacher-Scholar by Dr. Cowler. The Psychology Club brought several imminent psycholo- gists to speak on campus among whom were Harry F. Harlow and Rollo May. The Reli- gious Activities Federation sponsored two seminars, one on contemporary literature and one on African affairs. Film Series Committee offered an excellent and enlarged program this year. The number of films was increased to ten and two showings were given of each. A few of the films presented were Blue Angel, A Ballad of a Soldier, and The Seventh Seal. The Cultural Activities office was busy securing tickets for students requesting admission to such events in Chicago as the Lyric Opera, the New York City Ballet, and the Univer- sity of Chicago Folk Festival. On February 17, the Freshman Class was host to one hundred prospective Foresters for College Day 1962. The College Day Committee under the chairmenship of Betsy Bryant and Jim Findlay had planned a busy but typical day on campus for the visitors. Among the day's activities were tours of the campus, sample classroom lectures given College Day by several members of the faculty, lunch at Commons, a reception to meet the faculty. In the evening there was the Garrick performance of The Lark and an after-the-play dance in the foyer of the Institute to round out another successful College Day. It .4-QW ,sf .. P. The 1962 Junior Prom was a Bon Voy- age -- aboard the S.S. Milwaukee Clipper on May 26th. This last dance of the year took place on the decks of a Lake Michigan luxury liner on its first voyage of the sea- son. Music for dancing was provided by the ship's sea-going band. The Prom Committee was headed by Junior Class President Bob Koberg. Wig Pierson, Sandy Wolf, Edie Larson, Karen Ekstrand, Eric Schwarz, Judy Shirey lent their able support to Bob in the months of planning that went into making the Prom a success. The crowning of the King and Queen climaxed the evening of dancing. Without doubt Bon Voyage climaxed the dances of the year and was an appropriate harbing- er of summer vacation. ' ' 4.-. The season record was marred byfrecurring illnesses and in- juries, so that there was not a single wrestler who competed in every match. There were a few academic ineligibility losses to the team. The team showing in the Conference meet, held at LFC this year, was very good considering the team was not at full strength with John He- bert 1130 lbs.1, Chick Lord 1167 lbs.1, and Lloyd Roberts 1191 lbs.1 out of action for the meet.
