Klinlc, Dean oi Women. Miss Klinlt came to Lalce Forest in September 1944. A resident ot Bucyrus, Qhio, she obtained her BA degree from l-leidelberg College. She earned her MA at Syracuse University and has done additional graduate worlc at Northwestern. Before coming to l.al4e Forest she was a member ol the Dean ot Womens Stalt at Kent State Uni- versity, Junior Dean at Arizona State College, Director oi Womenxs Activities in the USC, Madison, Wisconsin, and Co-ordinator oi USO Activities, Denver, Colorado. Miss lflinlc came to our campus when the present graduating class was entering its First year, Qver this period ol time she has watched not only the lreshmen oi '44 mature but the college as a whole. For this reason we feel her views are representa- tive oi those held by the senior class. Hihose ol us who have had the rare privilege ol sharing these four stimulating, challenging years at l.alce Forest have been part oi a college which has grown in every way. It seems to me that tar more wonderful and thrilling than this has been the growth of the students within themselves. 4 1 ' . , , , - X ., , , ,.,,.,...:,':g1, ...,...,.,..,, . - x 5 . k . - , 1' , .A jacuky anal .xdalminidfrafion MCMA NE of the main advantages of a small college is that it provides a close association between students and faculty members. At l.alce Forest this is not merely an ideal but an actuality, Students are more than names and faculty mem- bers are more than professors, they are per- sonalities, Primarily, of course, our faculty act as edu- cators and advisers, but they also talce an active part in campus life. Both in and out of class, during office hours or on their free time, pro- fessors are willing to discuss problems ranging from class changes to World affairs. They are enthusiastic supporters., of our athletic teams. They chaperon our parties and join in the fun. Qnce a year they sell their services at the WSSF auction and cheerfully carry out their assigned jobs, which range from Window washing to Ii tennis lessons. The hospitality of homes in faculty circle is frequently extended to students. Each organized group on campus is sponsored by one or more faculty members. Basically, our faculty is the heart of the col- lege, for no educational institution can be better than its faculty. lhey strive voliantly to avvalcen us intellectually and to sharpen our awareness of the world in which we live. Cn the next pages are pictured this year's faculty members, but this is not the way in which students will remember them. They will more lilcely recall those Coffee Shop discussions, or the blue boolc analysis that developed into a bull session, or certain idiosyncrasies of some of the profs , but, more important, they will remember an idea or a thought received which made life richer. .!4l6I1l.l1l..5lI'flli0I1 ERNEST A. Professor of Romance Longuoges Professor of Philosophy ond Professor ofEngIish Psychology I adrieri Cfadfieri EPTEMBER, 1947, and with mixed feelings of regret and expectation the four classes re- turned to campus. The freshmen orientation period was followed by the confusion of regise tration, then rushing, and finally the college was able to settle down both to Worlc and to play. ln most cases pseudo wisdom was replaced by a real understanding and appreciation of classroom opportunities. The veterans were still a steadying influence on Lalte Forest life, Seniors loolced baclc on their college years with a sense of pride as well as with a feeling of loss for the soon-to-be-broken friendly ties that had held them so long. This class of '48 differed marlcedly from the one which had entered as the green freshmen of '44. They had started college in the troubled, uncertain war years, they were finishing college in still troubled times, but they had hope and faith in the future. As the seniors guided the other classes through the year they, with three years of experience behind them, set the pace and standards for the Foresters to follow. Under senior leadership the Student Council became a more important influence than ever before in the affairs of the college. The Student Center Committee, under a senior chairman, made concrete steps in the re-modeling and im- provement of the Coffee Shop, student gathering spot. Homecoming, College Day, and other events were carried off successfully underseniorleadership. The juniors reveled in their first taste of being upperclassmen but they took life more seriously than when they were sophomores. The high- 14 light of their year was the presentation of the junior prom. Juniors were active in all campus groups, gradually assuming more and more of the responsibility which they lcnew they would have as seniors -campus leaders. The class of '50 had become worldly sopho- mores. A few suffered from Sophomoritis , which turns friendly wide-eyed freshmen into lordly upperclassmen before their time. perhaps they played harder than they worl4ed, but they gave some serious thought to the future and tangled with the perplexing problems of de- claring maiors. They also became activity minded and worlced and waited eagerly for the day when they would be editors, presidents, and chairmen of the numerous organizations which add to the experiences of college life. As they struggled through the early weeks, first overcome by parties and then by red cards, the freshmen wondered if they would survive. Slowly the confusion lessened, with typical freshmen energy and drive they started on the long road to college prominence. As the puzzled pledges became actives and watched some of their hard-fought-for Cs change to Bs , they were spurred on to even higher pealcs. They loolced forward enthusiastically to the college years ahead. Every class had a part in the success of this college year. They worlced together towards a common goal, It is not one group of individuals or one class that malces Lalce Forest, it is the student body as a whole. For this reason the Forester proudly presents each class in pictures, their officers, their classmates, and their in- formal gatherings. W 1 A 1 Q. vis? rganizafiond rganizafionzi XTRA-CURRICULAR organizational activity plays an important part in the life oi many Lalce Forest students. These organizations are di- versified in character and scope, ranging from the academic special studies groups to the social sororities and fraternities, but from among them each student may be certain of Finding one or more which suits his particular interests and talents. Most highly regarded among the organiza- tions on the campus are the honoraries. Member- ship in Kappa Alpha lor Women and lron Key lor men carries high prestige, election to them being determined by a high level ol scholarship and leadership. Sigma Eta is an honorary scholastic fraternity, equivalent to phi Beta Kappa, and For Freshmen men and women there are Phi Sigma Eta and Alpha Lambda Delta, both based on scholastic achievement, Election to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities is another attainment. Seniors are selected for this honor on a basis ot leadership, scholarship and character. Beta Beta Beta, Phi Sigma lota and Pi Alpha Chi aclcnovvledge those who have met certain requirements and done superior vvorlc in biology, loreign lan- guages and music respectively. 54 The two most povvertul governmental organ- izations on campus are the Student Council and Women's Sell-Governing Associationflhe former is the governing board For all enrolled students, while the W,S.G.A, is a separate governing body lor resident Women. The student publications provide experience for students interested in journalism and in vvriting. Handicapped during the war years, the Stentor, student nevvspdper, Tusitala, the literary magazine, and the Forester have made a comebaclc. They have received much faculty as well as student support. Students interested in dramatics or stagevvorlc may qualify for the Garriclc Club. The Student Christian Association and the international Relations Club are representative ol groups providing lor discussion of current issues. The Greeks and Independents add much to the social lile of the campus. Their friendly competition engenders a motivating force to many college events, The Greeks are governed by the pan-Hellenic Council for the sororities and the lntertraternity Council for the ira- ternities. ff . .f an e vnu' OHIICI Q8 Os, ' N 1, ' , ,-.4' mf Mg. , ET' in m Q7 af ,V T3 Row1: B. Lake Forest was particularly impressive as it was lflmhurstfs third game, yet we completely dominated the play. lo Nyberg, who later received Little All- American l-lonors, went the honor of scoring the Foresters first touchdown on a pass from Mc- Allister. powers, Wahler, and Gagan followed with second half touchdown ramps. Lake Forest drew Wabash, our toughest opponent, in the home opener. Powers touch down pass to Nyberg kept the halftime score at 7 to 6, but, when our defence faltered in the Qnd half, Wabash coasted to a Q1 to 6 win. ln a hotly contested game with the defending conference champs, North Central, Lake Forest received its first conference setback 13 to 6. Kohlers pass to Eagle constituted our only score but with the help of four regulars sidelined with injuries liaczmarzinski, Zjawinski, Cartwright, and Secord, we might have repeated our 1946 upset. Another thriller with Carroll saw Lake Forest onthe short end ofa TQ to 7 score. After Carroll scored onthe opening play for the Qnd consecu- tive year, we settled down to an even battle. Carroll scored again on a freak play, a lines man racing 35 yards after picking up a fumble and the Foresters fought back with a 60 yard pass McAllister to Gutnick who was stopped on the five, powers hitting pay dirt two plays later. Qnce again Lake Forest dominated play leading in statistics as in the previous week, llh Lake Forest got back in the win column beat- ing lllinois VVesleyan 7 to O. lVl:Allister thrilled the homecoming crowd with a 95 yard dash for the games only score, Fierce line play domi- nated the game led by Carlin, Burgett, Forrest, Genovese and Baracani. Although threatening constantly, the red and black couldn't score and had to settle with a scoreless tie with the previously undefeated Augustana. lime and again tne Foresters pushed the ball deep into Viking territory only to falter at the goal line. ln water and mud Lake Forest slid to an easy win over Albion by the unindicative score of 6 to O. The game marked the end of a fine foot- ball career for Mike Powers, team captain and most consistent ground gainer. Mike, 1946's most valuable player, left for government service. Cartwrights 8 yard jaunt late in the first half was the day's only score. The Wheaton game concluded football for four seniors: Bill Carlin, Ray Genovese, Pete Bussone and Lee Yothers. Shoenherr, Wheaton back, scored five touchdowns to offset the scoring efforts of McAllister and Gutnik who scored twice and of Cousins and Baracani who spearheaded our attack. At the season's end Powers, Gutnik, and Nyberg were named to All Conference teams and Gutnik was further honored by being selected as the team's most valuable player. What will be remembered are the proms, the wallcs on the beach, the pinnings and all the other aspects that compose student lite. This is an intangible term, covering every phase of campus social activity from the dorm to the formal dances. Even before the first classes start, LFC social life is under way and after the last blue bool4 final in slune, non-academic life is still of primary importance. For it is an integral, important part ofcollege education, Fall can best be remembered for fraternity pledging'-the girls lining the sidewallcs strain- ing for a better view, the fraternity men marching in compact ranlcs to the chant of their songs. The gift exchanges and serenades which follow are once again important to campus life. Homecoming highlights are many-the floats, the crowning ofthe queen, the game, the dance and most important the returning alums. lhroughout the year the various Nweeltendsif sponsored by campus groups transform the lnstitute into everything from a circus to a gay nineties bowery party for the enjoyment of the whole student body. Brother and sister Greelc and lndependent groups act as sponsors as do organizations such as WSGA and the Forester. Freshmen and upperclassmen alil4e loolt forward to the sorority and fraternity pledge dances. This year the Edgewater and the 160 Stevens were chosen by the sororities while the fraternities preferred Waukegan and North- shore locations. lhe annual White Christmas Formal was held at the Stevens while l-lighland Park was chosen for the biggest event of the year, the Junior Prom, which featured for Lalce Foresters to remember Bill Engbergs orchestra and a smaller combo to suit everyonefs taste in music, Concerning the more serious side of campus life, Garrick players are always remembered for their many successful performances which put them above the amateur class, lhere are, too, the more informal campus presentations, as the various variety shows given throughout the year. These are student produc- tions put on by and for the students. lhere is little professional polish and much slap sticlc involved but they are enthusiastically received. As the college year comes to a close there are other memorable daysgl-lonorfs Chapel, Baccalaureate Sunday,lgraduation-until at last we realize some of us are no longer a part of Lalte Forest, we are no longer tied by the in- visible threads of campus life, It should be remembered there is more to student life than the parties, the plays and the lun. lhere are the many little things which remain in our memories to remind us of the wonderful days that have slipped by so quiclcly. These incidents are just part of a year at college, yet in many respects they compose the mast important aspects of our college lives. It is our hope that the Forester will help you to re-live those memories. The Digoms give o sprecd. raferfnify lgkfflging Sleepy ond Bob lead the Alpha Srg ime Trudy ond Bull exchange the gifts. For a slight change in pace we did a thorough cleaning job on the stairs by going up and down on all lours for what seemed an eternity. While the poor pledges were sutfering, the actives sat back with their cokes, good bridge hands, and a cigarette. Some pledges were allowed to sleep lor ten minutes lor being so good and others were given egg shampoos. A scavenger hunt was the main activity of the afternoon and the tired, lorlorn laces wore a grin once more as many articles needed made it necessary to go to the fraternities. previous to this the lowly pledges i I' were not allowed to speak to men and ol course must not be seen in the coilee shop.
