WE GIVE YOU OUR BOYS Our campus firsf realized fhe immensify of World War ll when, during fhe firsf semesfer of fhe year I942-43, a fraining unif was formed and fhe boys spenf an affernoon a week marching, masfering fhe elemenfs of close order drill, bayonef pracfice, skirmishing, organ- izafion, and iusf learning fo be soldiers, under fhe guidance of officers from Forf Sheridan. We could look ouf of fhe windows in fhe Coffee Shop fo wafch fhis phenomena wifh ease, and we did. Then on February 27, I943, fhe Army Enlisfed Reserve Corps was called up for fraining. We sfood in fronf of College Hall and wafched fhose fhirfy-five fellows leave as we sang fhe Alma Mafer. The Army and Navy Air Corps called 'rheir reserves shorfly fhereaffer. War had made ifs firsf real inroad upon Lake Foresf College. One by one, fhe boys were greefed wifh a summons fo help defend our nafiong fhey, foo, deparfed. Mosf of fhe fellows wenf info fhe service during fhe summer of I943, and when school opened in Sep- fember of fhaf year, we found an A.S.T.P. unif in fheir places. The army was abouf 400 sfrong. They lived in fhe frafernify houses, Norfh Hall, and in fhe old Alice Home Hospifal which was called Home Hall, for convenience's sake. Our few civilian sfudenfs lived up in College Hall. Af fhe beginning of fhe second semesfer, in January I944, we had our firsf discharged soldier refurn fo school-a former Foresfer who had gone wifh fhe E.R.C. From fhaf fime on we have gained sfeadily in fhe enrollmenf of fhose who have served in fhe armed forces. As far as we here have been concerned-we've been waifing as has everyone else. We've wriffen fons of leffers, senf lofs of packages, waifed daily for fhe mail fruck and ifs imporfanf confenfs, have sef up a special page for and abouf our boys in service in fhe STENTOR which we called Communiques g we've rolled bandages, given blood, boughf bonds, kniffed for fhe Red Cross, subscribed fo fhe various war fund drives, sponsored dances for a number of service groups, gone fo fhe U.S.O., have spenf a maior parf of our fime in and around fhe Sfudenf Cenfer greefing, fhen reminiscing wifh fhe fellows from L.F.U. who are in fhe service and who have sfopped in for a visif while on furlough: we've seen weddings and have received sfarred-felegrams. We read fhe newspapers in fhe Coffee Shop over our morning cup of java, discuss fhe war and ifs relafed problems, and lisfen fo fhe commenfaries over fhe radio. We revere fhose of us who have made fhe supreme sacrifice and never walk pasf fhe service flag in fhe lnsfifufe buf whaf we pay fribufe fo fhose for whom fhe gold sfar sfands and offer a silenf prayer for 'rhe welfare of all fhose who are designafed by fhe blue. We know whaf fhis war is abouf, we're learning how fo deal wifh fhe problems if will and has already creafed, and we're frying fo do our bif fo bring a complefe and speedy vicfory. TERMISSIGN Eighf o'clock and fhe beginning of a busy day on Lake Foresf campus as sfudenfs rush fhrough fhe doors of College Hall fo dash up fhe sfairs for fheir eighf o'clocks. The Coffee Shop opens, and fhe Lake Foresfers pour in for hur- ried breakfasfs. Someone sfarfs fhe iuke box while fhe air fills wifh smoke from precious cigareffes. Dashing in and ouf, sfuclenfs refrieve losf books, look for friends, shouf hellos, and generally add fo fhe confusion. Amid all fhis, orders are being faken behind fhe counfer, jammed wifh people. Those who have a free period sfop fo playq hand of bridge, fhe noon hour sees fhe commufers gafhered fogefher for lunch, while games of pool or ping-pong gel' underway and Boogie Woogie is drummed ouf on fhe piano. A peek info The STENTCR or FORESTER offices reveals sfaff members fyping arficles or planning layoufs. Lafe affernoon and fhe excifemenf lessens. Affer dinner fhe hub-bub is resumed when fhe Coffee Shop reopens and nighf classes begin. Finally, fhe lasf sfudenfs leave for fheir dorms and College Hall is peaceful and quief unfil eighf o'clock fhe nexf morning, when fhe same roufine will begin all over again for anofher day af Lake Foresf College. , Jgjvglf.
