X ELDON C. HILL Mr. Eldon C, Hill received the Bachelor oi Arts degree from DePauw University. For two years after graduation he was on the editorial staff of The Indianapolis News, editing copy, contributing reviews of plays and books, and serving as assistant state editor. In nineteen-hundred and twenty-nine he entered the University of Wisconsin on a Graduate Scholarship, and in Iune, nineteen-hundred and thirty, received the Master of Arts degree. Then for two years he was Instructor in the English Department at Ohio Vifesleyan University. He attended Columbia University in the summer of nineteen-hundred and thirty-one, and during the academic year prior to his coming to Lake Forest College in September, nineteen-hundred and thirty-three, he car- ried forward his work toward the doctorate in the English Department of the Graduate School at Ohio State University. For the past few years he has been making a thorough study of the life and work of Hamlin Garland, Pulitzer Prize winner, the author of Main-Travelled Roads and the famous Middle Border series of books in social and literary history. Mr. Hill is basing his research largely upon original sources: letters, documents, and manuscripts, access to which has been possible through his personal acquaintance with the writer. EDWARD FRANKLIN PERRY Mr. Edward Franklin Perry is Instructor in History. Mr Perry received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College, the Master of Arts degree from the same institution, and also the Masters' degree from Harvard University. His graduate work was in European and particularly English history. Since coming here in nineteen-hundred and thirty-three Mr. Perry has taken his preliminary exams for the Doctor of Philosophy degree, and has yet to write his thesis. Before coming to Lake Forest College, Mr. Perry was a newspaper reporter in Hartford, Connecticut, and an Assistant in the Harvard History Department. RALPH R. IONES Mr. Ralph R. Iones is Director of Athletics. lvir. Iones started his college coaching at Wabash College, as Basketball Coach. He later was appointed Athletic Director and Coach of all major sports. After spending five years at Xflfabash he went to Purdue where he coached Basketball, Track, and the Backfield in Football. He finished his third year as Football Coach. He went next to Illinois University as Assistant Athletic Director, acting Purchasing Agent tor the Athletic Association, Coach of the varsity Basketball team, Freshman Football, and Assistant Coach in Baseball. After eight successful years here he went to the Lake Forest Academy as Athletic Director, coaching Football, Basketball, and Baseball. His record here attracted the notice of the Chicago Bear's Professional Football team. I-le pulled the Bears out of a long slump and won the League Championship his third year, developing a system of play which they still use f I-ie came to Lake Forest College as Head Coach in nineteen- hundred and thirty-three. GILBERT A. IOI-INSON Mr. Gilbert A. Iohnson is Assistant Director of Athletics. Mr. Iohnson has the Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern Uni- versity, and is at present engaged in working on the Masters' degree at the same institution. Before coming to Lake Forest College in nineteen-hundred and thirty-four, Mr. lohnson had been athletic director of Farilg-ault I-Iigh School for three years, As well as coaching Freshman Football and Basketball and managing classes in Physical Education for Men, Mr. Iohnson has charge of the Intramural Athletics program of the college. RICHARD WIDMARK Mr. Richard W'idmark is Assistant Director of Speech. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Lake Forest College in nineteen- hundred and thirty-six. lvir. Widmark had ari oustanding college career, having leading roles in many Garrick plays, a member of the debate team for four years, placing third in the State Peace Oratorical Contest, as well as earning his varsity letter in tootlzall, being a rnemliier of Iron Key, and President of the Senior Class. DONALD DEAN PARKER Doctor Donald Dean Parker is Librarian ci the college. A proriui of Illinois schools, Doctor Parker received the Bachelors degree from Park College in Missouri, the Masters degree for work done in Sociology at the University of Chicago and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same institution. I-Ie also attended the University ot Illinois for a summer, and the University ct Strasbourg, France, for a year. Doctor Parker has traveled extensively in more than a score of countries. For ten years he lived aloroad: in China, the Philippines, and in Europe. For two years he was Librarian and Instructor cf English in Shantung Christian University in North China. Atter a year of travel and study in Europe, and three years of study in this country, Doctor Parker went to the Philippines under the Bureau of Education. After a year in the Provinces, he went to Manila as Principal of the Untion I-ligh School, a position he held for five years. This was followed by a year and a halt of study at the University of Chicago Where he was a Fellow.
