REID MEMCRIAI. LIBRARY The Reid Memorial Library, a gitt ot Mrs. Arthur Somerville Fteid, was erected at Lake Forest College in l899 and supplied a place tor the many books which had betore been kept in College l-lall. Our library has grown with the college until today it has the second largest number ot volumes per student ot any college in lllinois and is the fourth in actual number ot books in the state. Miss Mabel Powell, librarian, has been associ- ated with the college for many years. This year during the illness ot Miss Powell, Mrs. F. A. lohnson ably took charge ot the li- brary and the tive student assistants who work there. Lake Forest College Library is a reterence library and is well endowed with such material. lt contains an unusual collection ot encyclopediae and dictionaries. Tt also contains collections ot material tor all the departments ot the college, but is especially supplied with English and Fto- mance language books. There are to be tound within the walls ot the library govern- ment documents and some ot the very early journals ot Congresss-journals given to the college by Mr. C. B. Farwell. ln it there are also statues ot Moses, Buddah, and Dante which were gitts to the school. The statue ot Moses was given by Mr. I. V. Farwell and that ot Buddah carrie trom Korea and was

Mr. Carter PitzHugh originally gave to the college the shields on which the names of the honor students of each graduating class were to be engraved. The first shield was placed on the wall in 1910. ln l93l the Carnegie Grant allowed 310,000 to the col- lege tor the purpose ot purchasing new books tor the library. Since then there have been added to our collection some very valuable as well as many useful books. Plans have been rnade to rernodel the in- terior ot the library to allow more room tor books and periodicals and to provide a place which will be tree from any possible tire hazards. 4 -fi. - A-4.2.3 ftlziq UI.- l-f...
