Our library has grown with the college until today it has the second largest number ot volumes per student ot any college in lllinois and is the fourth in actual number ot books in the state. Miss Mabel Powell, librarian, has been associ- ated with the college for many years. This year during the illness ot Miss Powell, Mrs. F. A. lohnson ably took charge ot the li- brary and the tive student assistants who work there. Lake Forest College Library is a reterence library and is well endowed with such material. lt contains an unusual collection ot encyclopediae and dictionaries. Tt also contains collections ot material tor all the departments ot the college, but is especially supplied with English and Fto- mance language books. There are to be tound within the walls ot the library govern- ment documents and some ot the very early journals ot Congresss-journals given to the college by Mr. C. B. Farwell. ln it there are also statues ot Moses, Buddah, and Dante which were gitts to the school. The statue ot Moses was given by Mr. I. V. Farwell and that ot Buddah carrie trom Korea and was - -- - r . cp ' , Ii'- 'xb ' Qin' given by Mr. Henry White. The painting of Dr. Bross Thomas which hangs over the tire- place was presented by Harriet Blackstone. Mr. Carter PitzHugh originally gave to the college the shields on which the names of the honor students of each graduating class were to be engraved. The first shield was placed on the wall in 1910. ln l93l the Carnegie Grant allowed 310,000 to the col- lege tor the purpose ot purchasing new books tor the library. Since then there have been added to our collection some very valuable as well as many useful books. Plans have been rnade to rernodel the in- terior ot the library to allow more room tor books and periodicals and to provide a place which will be tree from any possible tire hazards. 4 -fi. - A-4.2.3 ftlziq UI.- l-f... L , HERBERT MCCCMB MOORE President Three Qutstending Events in 1935-36 At the Annual Christmas dinner, held on Thursday, December l2, in the Calvin Durand Commons, Calvin Durand Trow- bridge, lr., presented to the college an oil painting of Calvin Durand. Mr. Durand was the donor of the Commons in which the ceremony took place and which is named for him. The painting was presented by the family of Calvin Durand, and it is now hanging on the west wall of the building which was the result of his generosity. On Cctober 22, l935, President l-l. M. Moore announced to all parts of the world the Bross Prize Competition which will award, at its culmination in l94O, fifteen thousand dollars for the best literary work showing the connection, relation and mutual bearing of any of the humanities or sciences with or on the Christian religion. This Prize Competition marks the fiftieth year of the William Bross Foundation and surpasses in . VT F l l an - scope and value all of its activities. lt is open to scholars and writers of all nations, and will extend until the end of l939. The second Annual Mid-Winter Banquet of Lake Forest College was held on the eve- ning of Friday, March l3, in the beautiful Crystal Ballroom of the Edgewater Beach Hotel where there were gathered more than three hundred students, alumni, faculty, trustees, and friends of the college. Student and alumni speakers described the activi- ties of the campus by short sketches in which they pictured each activity and its leaders. Four college musical organizations-the Band, the Crchestra, the Chorus, and the newly formed Men's Glee Club-added to the entertainment. Two new prize-winning songs, A Song of Praise by Lois Wilson and Edgeley Todd and Varsity Song by Allen Long, were presented to the audience and sung by the chorus for the first public performance. He has made dramatics and stage craft, both as courses of study and as extra-curricular ac- tivities, sources of valuable training and pleasure. To be a member of the Garrick Club is an honor and goal coveted by everyone interested in acting. The little theater movement has taken America by storm as the only salvation for the legiti- mate stage. The Durand Little Theater of Lake Forest College under the direction of the Garrick Club serves its purpose on the North Shore to bring good plays at a low cost to the lovers of real drama. This year through the joint donations of the classes of l933 and 1935 and the College funds a beautiful new red velour curtain was install- ed in the Henry C. Durand Auditorium. The +l Garriclc season was opened October 23 and 24 by the presentation of Oscar Wilde's costume play The Importance of Being Ernest. Growing Pains by Aurania Rou- verol was chosen for the Freshman pro- duction and was given December 4 and 5. Maxwell Andersons Pulitzer Prize winning play Both Your Houses was staged March 4 and 5. Mr. Tomlinson revived the Garrick success of several years ago Ladies of The fury by Ballard and it was presented by an experienced cast the l5 and lb of April. Mr. Tomlinson has been assisted this year by Dorothea Gottlieb Miller, and Frederick Gottlieb has ably filled the difficult position of stage manager. STENTOR The Stentor, Lake Forest's weekly news- paper, is celebrating its Golden lubilee Year. ln l887, six enterprising students applied to the faculty for permission for its publication which was granted in Iune of that year. Since that time the Stentor has changed from a small magazine-sized paper, which was financed by student contribution, to an eight-page newspaper and a recognized col- lege activity. This last year the staff organ- ization was put on a fairer basis by the adoption of a new constitution which estab- lished the staff as: Editor, this year Stephen W. Gray, Business Manager, Keith Cady, and four department heads-News, Lois f23l Wilson, Sports, Frank Boberts, Features, Dale Smith, and Womens News, tune Web- ster. Following an established tradition, the freshmen published the issue of February 14. Edward Ienner, Buth Brennan, and Carlisle Galvin acted as editors. Since there are no journalism classes in the regular curriculum, the Stentor, with the assistance of the Faculty Board of Publications-Mr. Keller, Mr. Perry, and Mr. Hill, sponsored a series of evening classes in journalistic technique and prob- lems. Lectures were given by the staff and prominent local newspaper men on the writing of news stories, features, and sport stories. 1 fX' tif, 5 , , .L f v 1 , fl, 1 A .1 ff f 1 4, ,A U. , , r Z X , 's , 4 5 ,fn .'r' , . TUSITALA TUSlTAlJ-X is edited this year by Harlan lVlcClung, an outstanding Sophomore, and he is assisted by two others, Catherine Craig, Poetry Editor, and Robert Katz, Book Re- views. TUSTTALA is a literary magazine published twice a year to provide an out- let for creative writing for the students of the college. So successful did this magas zine prove upon its introduction last year by two juniors, Stephen Gray and Netta Steinhaus, that this year the administration undertook to finance it as a recognized stu- dent activity. The name Tusitala is that which was given to Robert Louis Stevenson by the native of the South Sea Islands. The publication is sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, national English fraternity, although it does not attempt to control its editorship. Ol A m x LL fit! 1-211 ll!! XX x page tt Q IA! STUDENT CCDUNCII. This is the first year the student council has worked under the new constitution adopted by the student body in the sprinq ot l935. lt is based on the theory ot equal representation to eliminate factions and poli- tics from the qovernment. One representa- tive, either junior or senior, is elected by each aroup to represent them on the council which supervises the senior class elections, appoints committee heads, junior prom kinq, hazinq chairman, and freshman dance chair- man. Dale Smith and Willard Dailcer were chosen as delegates to the annual conven- tion ot the National Student Federation ot America held at Kansas City, Missouri, De- cember 27, l935. lt is the policy ot the council to send one senior and one junior with the intention that the junior deleqate will also ao his senior year. An open iorum was held April l7 to discuss national and local problems. The otticers ot the council are: Willard Daiker, presidentg Dale Smith, vice-presidentg and Dorothea Landry, sec- retary. l31l Top How Elizabeth Siemen, Dorothea Landry, Margaret McKenzie, Mariorie lnqram, Estella Mae Lawrence, Helen Smith.
