Mike Gross came to us three years ago, as a sophomore, from Harvey, Illinois, Since his arrival he has left many things to be re- membered. His good humor has made him liked by everybody in school. His partici- pation in the Choir and Octet has not only made those activities better, but has helped them promote the school to outsiders. His likeable personality has made him many faithful friends, as can be seen in his election to such various offices as the treas- urer of the sophomore class and the treas- urer of the Service Society in his senior year Mike is a well rounded boy who does equally as Well in the classrooms as on the different playing fields We wish Mike as much success in the years to come as he attained here at LPA Ni ' ' ' 2 ' ' ', ', 1 .1 ' ent on the Service Society Board. 1 D .21 ill ' ' A . Boice. crviccz ocicty ln previous years the Service Society has been the largest extracurricular activity in the school, This year it was almost totally revised. Every boy in the school is a member, The actual administrative duties are performed by the Service Society Cabinet, which consists of twenty-two boys, ten seniors, five juniors, four sophomores, and three freshmen. Each year more boys are appointed to this council from each class, finally reaching the maximum of ten in the senior year, Any boy may be dropped and a new one put in his place if the situation is drastic enough to merit it. The lower classmen are not allowed to vote on matters that directly concern the school, but may on other issues, and they may freely expound their views on anything that comes up. The officers of this body are: Hal Koppel, President, Sam Addoms, Vicefpresi- dent, Dale Edwards, Secretary, and Mike Gross, Treasurer. Mr, Truslow is the faculty adviser. Most of the duties of the Society are performed by committees of boys taken from the cabinet. Among these is the Service Committee, whose meme bers visit either Ridge Farm or Lake Bluff Orphanaae alona with some boys outside the Cabinet and give help in numerous ways, The Flag Committee makes sure that all school flags are put up in the morning and taken in at night, The Reception Committee welcomes outside visitors, The Christmas Fund Committee manages the only drive, which takes place at Christmas. This year the drive netted 351,150 which was divided amona eleven needy charities. Since the Cabinet takes the place of the now nonfexistent Student Council, there are numerous small committees appointed as the needs arise, which take care of small items such as making requests and suggestions to the school administration. The Service Society manages the two new agencies that were set up this year, the Lost and Found and the Tuck Shop. For the latter the Society bore rowed 351,700 from the Mothers' Association, which they will pay back from the proceeds of the shop. The Tuck Shop offers necessities such as toothpaste and luxuries like ice cream. This fact coupled with a new system for facili- tating production has resulted in a fine record, every deadline has been met. The most recognition should be given to the editors who inevitably do the most work. Dirk Meyer as make-up editor had the arduous task of planning the dummy of each issue, Iim Garland, the news editor, was responsible for assigning and receiving stories. The job of feature editor was in the capable hands of Steve Morris, Bill Whitman, sports editor, and Charles Barton, associate editor, also con- tributed much time and effort to the cause, pcctator George Kangas as editor-in-chief had the re- sponsibility of tying the paper together. A vote of thanks must also be given to lohn l-luss for his excellent photography throughout the year, Without his hard work the paper would have lacked much of its interest. Dick Sanford, Tony Wastcoat, and Elliot Donnelley deserve recognition for the many ads they obtained, and lim Snyder is to be thanked for the distribution of each issue. The 50th year of the Specs existence has been a successful one. The publication of each issue on time was insured by the invaluable aid given by Mr. Nelson, the faculty advisor, and Mrs. Nelson. The Academy often played against teams which boasted foreign players of great ability, lt is very likely, had I-lenry Leong been avail- able to the squad, that the number ot games won would have egualed or exceeded the num- ber of losses, This years journey to Cranbrook proved quite successful for the soccer squad. Lake Porest defeated Cranbrook for the first time on the home field of Cranbrook The score of the 76 game Was l-U, and the only goal was made by Tom Moore during the second period on a pen- alty shot, On October 27 the Academy soccer team upset the University of Chicago which had beaten Lake Porest earlier in the season. The game was played at Stagg Pield in Chicago and the final score was 3-l, The game was completely dominated by the Caxymen with George Kangas, Tom Moore, and Bill Bowen each scoring against Chicago. A third highlight of the season was a tie against the University of Notre Dame. Cap- tain Iim Snyder, the only returning letterman, led the squad to an eight win and fourteen loss record. Considering that he was the only re- turning letterman and that there was only one other returnee from last year's squad, the season ended quite well. The first team con- sisted of three seniors: lim Snyder, guard, Mike Ruhl, forward, Bob Burroughs, center, and two sophomores: Walt Stevenson, guard, and Dave Kennedy. forward. The other players who lettered were Iack Morris, Sam Addoms, Les Gage, and Rylee Brown. These five underclass- men and three other sophomores: Carl Davis, Iohn Kelly, and Bill l-lopper, who were brought up to the varsity to play in the conference tour- ney, will be the nucleus of next year's squad. ln retrospect the coach, Mr. Barrere and the faculty advisor, Mr. Nelson, were pleased with certain aspects of the season. They were especially pleased with the added spark the team showed in the games following the mid- Winter break. The team won against three teams: Chicago Lutheran North, Wisconsin Lutheran, and Milwaukee Lutheran. After losing to Northwestern Military Academy, they went on to deal Northwestern Preps. a decisive 80 defeat. This upset of the second place team in the conference brought the Caxymen to a tie for fifth place in the final league standings. The younger members of the team gained invalu- able experience, which will pay off in the con- ference race for the next two years. The lack of height plus a definite lack of experience harmed the team a great deal, especially in the early games. One main point that Mr. Barrere was especially proud of was the way in which the team never gave up. This is shown by the fact that during the two losing streaks the team had, they never lost their spirit. Iim Snyder was, in the opinion of many qualified observers, the best defensive player in the conference. At the end of the season he had the responsibility of guarding the high scoring player of the other teams. Also he car- ried the scoring burden for the Academy and ended with 242 points to lead LFA's team. lim was elected to the All-Conference Tournament Team and received honorable mention in the All-Conference Team selection. Mike Ruhl led the team in scoring for individual games with 24 points. Mike Ruhl and Bob Burroughs did an excellent job working against bigger men in scoring and rebounding. The year's graduat- ing senior players wish next year's squad the best of luck. gy A mai r- 'N Q33-if 3 5 D E IIM SNYDER Captain All-Conference IACK MORRIS DAVE KENNEDY S 'X f ., sf, , Q wi, LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA LPA BOX SCORE , XX br . 4 X 35 MCD . . .40 MUS , . 47 Wayland . 37 Racine . .
