Well represented on every organization, whether athletic or otherwise, we have dem- onstrated to the class of '44 what can be awaited when they leave their positions of responsibility for duties more serious in the omnipresent war. Scholastically, our class has met the increasing demands placed on us by the standards ofthe service programs. Athletically, we have had excellent representa- tion on the various squads and many of our members helped form the backbone of the whole athletic program. Our Junior Prom proved a highlight of the winter term, since everyone agreed that it was the best dance in recent memory. ln other extra-curricular events, we were,with perhaps an outloolc toward malcing the activities next year the best ever, exceedingly prominent. All in all, our members were valuable participants in every worthwhile activity on the campus. At the beginning of this year, we elected as officers of our class those boys who, we felt, could most copably handle the responsibilities of leadership: ,lim Nance, president, Ernest Elegenheimer, vice-president, Gordon Eggers, secretary-treasurer, and Ted Stein, sergeant-at-arms. With these boys as leaders we feel that we have made our junior year here at LFA the most successful yet. At each meeting spirited arguments were engaged in by students on such subjects as Mcompulsory Military Training, or Mlhe League ol Nations versus a lfforld State. Conducted in true democratic lorm, the Forum reilected the attitude of the student body. The Forum was headed by a committee oi seven seniors-john Qarnes, Claude Brenner, Mike Dana, Bill l-larris, VVarren Ingersoll, Bob Myhrum and Sam Nlcgorley- and was advised by Dr. Shank ol the English department. At each meeting, presided over by some student as chairman, tvvo members ol the committee would present the pro and con oi the subject under discussion. The meeting would then be thrown open to the Floor, and members ol the junior and senior classes would continue the discussion. The meetings were entirely in the hands ofthe students. Qccasionally a speaker from the outside was invited, and on such occasions the library vvas packed. lhose who attended will long remember fVlr. Behls fascinating talk on the social, political, and economic problems oi present-day Germany. For the First time in its history, the club collaborated with lhe Ferry l-lall players in presenting a play, Captain Applejaclcf' by Walter l-laclcett, which was produced on February 95th at the Deerpath Theatre. It starred Gene Lamb as Ambrose Applejohn, who was supported by jud Devereaux, joe Gauger, and Claude Brenner. Mr. L. Ellsworth Lallin, LPA '14, and a recipient ol a l3h.D, from the Yale School ol Dramatics, directed the play most ably and expertly, lor his help the Gargoyle Club ollers its deep appreciation, At the beginning ol the year the Gargoyle ranlcs were sorely depleted, The eight returning members lrom last year's club elected as their ollicers Gene Lamb, president, and Claude Brenner, secretary-treasurer. When the reauest was made lor anyone interested in joining to see the president, Fifty-seven students turned out, the largest number in many years. Some ol these are ceramics, including Figurines, tiles, and pottery, wood-carving, sculpture, and decorations lor dances. Thirteen boys made head sculptures ol service men, which were displayed in the village and entered in a contest judged by Mrs. Sylvia S. Judson. ,lud Devereaux won the First prize and received a Five volume History of Art. Two boys, ,lohn Sperry and jim Wermuth, were given honorable mention. Many ol the results ol the boys' wood-carving talent may be seen in the Faculty Lounge, where they are on display. There are, among other things, trays, statues, and bowls, all products ol the students' endeavors. The art classes have contributed much to lceeping up the morale of the school by the good worlt they have done on the dance decorations. The best ol these has been at the Football Dance, the ,lunior Prom, and Spring Festival. The picture library and exhibits in Reid l-lall have also contributed much to the school. Both master and students have had a lruitlul year and have made a great advance- ment in art interest at LPA. Mr. Behl himself brought honor to the school by his winning of the Joseph N. Eisendrath prize in sculpturing at the lorty-eighth annual exhibition by artists ol Chicago at the Chicago Art lnstitute. Appleby, Reichers, and Walsh, and the cap- taincy of Ernie Flegenheimer, the soccer team improved greatly during its second season at LFA, About fifty boys turned out for practice in September showing an increased interest in soccer and encouraging the coaches and members of last yeor's sauad. There were only two returning lettermen, Coclcrell and Flegenheimer, but around them and other veterans, Coach Appleby built his team. Qn Qctober 74th the Caxymen traveled to Lane Tech to play the city champs but were downed, 4-O. Next Lalce Forest toolc on Morton at the lattefs field and again tasted defeat, this time by 5-O. Three days later Schurz High came to Lalce Forest and defeated the Grange and Blaclc, 6-'l, the Academyls lone goal being scored by Hechler, ln their next home game the Caxymen were nosed out, Q-'l, by Morton in the final minute of play. The Grange and Black were hosts to the Acorns from ack Park For the Final game ol the season. The Acorns, however, spoiled the Academys last home stand, 4-O. The teams record shows that this season was not a standout when it comes to results, but the boys revealed that they had a definite interest in soccer and played good ball against tough opponents. With the exception of Coyle and Collins this year's squad was the same one that carried LPA to the double championship in '43, At the finish of the Prep Tournament, held here in laalfe Forest, two Grange and Blaclc players-guard lNlip Weston and high scoring center and co-captain Bill Earle-were chosen on the all-tournament team because of their outstanding performances. The Caxymen lost no time in serving notice that they intended to retain the conference championship as they raclted up five successive victories over Sullivan l-ligh and l-lyde Park of Chicago, Millwaulcee University School, Pullman lech, and Culver, before dropping their initial game of the season in the last-minute defeat at St, ,lohn's. Undaunted, the Grange and Black started another victory string, which listed Pullman Tech, Mil- waukee Country Day, Elgin Academy, St. johns, and Parlc as victims, but was snapped by an upset at the hand of MUS in two overtimes, From then on in until the end of the cage season the Caxy five found the hoop elusive as it dropped two out of its last three contests, one of which was partly due to the loss of 'Knob' Walsh, star guard, to the Navy Air Corps, As lucl4 would have it the Champions drew a bye in the pairings of the tournament, but faced a strong St. johns quintet in one of the most im- portant games of the tournament in the second round. The Grange and Blaclc five entered the contest handicapped by the loss of Co-captain Walsh but put on a dazzling display of both offensive and defensive baslcetball to outplay completely the taller cadet rivals and assume a lE2 to O first-quarter lead. The Caxymen, with jim Collins verv ably replacing Walsh, were never headed throughout the contest and finished on top by a score of 45 to 36. ln the finals the Caxymen easily ran over a Culver team 4l to 30 for the championship. The nucleus ol the team will be built around seven returning veterans: Weston, Wermuth, vlones, Myhrum, lVlcSorley, l lopkins, Alexander, ol whom only one, l-lopkins, is a letterman. As usual, the squad is handicapped by a lack of material, but the addition of several newcomers bolsters hopes consider- ably. Those who have shown much promise during spring trials are Ted Rector, who is scheduled to run in the WOO, 440, and hall-mile, Arnie Larsen and Dwight Lawrence, dash men, and Mlud Devereaux, miler. Chuck l'lopkins, distance man, heads the Field ol the returning thin clads and is heavily counted on as main point-maker. l-lopkins and Rector paired together should, in all probability, be very hard to beat, Weston and Alex- ander carry Qrange and Black hopes in the hurdles, Mcgorley and Nlyhrum are returning weight men, and Jim Wermuth and Weston respectively man the high-jump and pole vault positions. With five returning lettermen and some promising new material, the club may well become the best in several years, The veterans are Milce Dana, Bill Earle, Sandy l-lall, Colby lngram, and ,lim Vaughan. The team is already going through full infield and batting practices and is shaping up well. The loss of last year's two star pitchers, Doug Smith and Knobby Walsh, has pre- sented quite a problem to Mr. Cahill, but he has delved deep into his store of ma- terial and discovered possibilities in such fellows as Clow, Dana E. l-lall and Nance. 1 1 Veterans Dana, Earle, l-lall, and Vaughan and roolcies Goodman and Gourley are expected to provide plenty of trouble for opposing pitchers. All in all, the squad seems to be a well- balanced and fairly powerful outfit, with competent hurlers and experienced hitters. The infield is shifty and fast and the outfield is dependable. The lall sports, lootball and soccer, ended in a draw with a victory and a tie lor each club, but the winter term saw the Blacks take a slight edge in the series as they captured 3 out ol 5 events, dropping only one basketball game and the swimming meet. The Qranges, however, are heavily lavored to even the score this spring at the track meet as the majority ol the varsity team are Qranges. Thus, it will probably come to pass that the baseball series will determine the school champion. The soccer series, from which soccer lettermen ore prohibited started the lall OB activities and saw the Oranges assume a game lead as the lightweight teams battled to a 'l to 'l tie and the Clrange heavyweights defeated their rivals, 3 to Q. jim Mark and Mickey Finn scored For the Blacks and Qranges respectively to push Klacle their teams into a 7-7 tie in the lightweight football division, and Frank Keelels touchdown sent the heavy- weight Blaclcs into a 7 to O win and an overall tie with the Qranges-thus evening the lall sports competition, Four baslfetball games were held in the winter term program-lightweight A and B and Heavyweight A and B games. QF these lour contests, the Blaclcs defeated the smaller Qranges in three, winning both lightweight games and losing only in the last minute to a Fighting underdog Grange A Five, '18-16. With these victories the Blacks Forged ahead by Q games, but saw their lead cut to l event as the Qrange mermen whipped their opponents in a thrilling swimming meet, the outcome ol which was not decided until the Final relay. Activity is the essence of Academy life, and these women do their fair share in providing the periods of relaxation that brealt up the routine of school life. With chocolate parties, teas, or just pleasant conversa- tion the ladies of the faculty are always standing by. They contribute materially to the process of malting men, for while the inner man may well be satisfied at one of their teas, the outer man has a chance to learn something of social ease and naturalness. They serve as hostesses along with Mrs. Bowditch at the Sunday afternoon get- togethers at the l-leadmaster's home, a meeting which has beome one of the most popular of all the LPA traditions. ln any campus activity the dignity and grace with which these ladies serve has long been admired by all. Lest you thinlc, however, that their lives are wholly involved in the school, their civic record is one which any group may be proud of. Their Red Cross group is one whose productive achievement is scarcely to be equaled by any other in the town of Lalce Forest. They have registered with the QCD. and have been long serving the Y.W.C.A. and the Defense Cottage. We pay tribute to their friendship, hospitality, helpfulness, and their service, not only to the school, but also to the community at large.
