The first crisis of our college life came Freshman-Sophomore week, in the fall, when we faced tyranny with infinite patience. Once initiated, we immediately threatened the mighty senior victors with our athletic prowess. Our athletic achievement came in the spring swimming and riding meets. Social talents were displayed to best advantage by our Valentine Party and spring dance. Our lavish entertainment for the two upper classes and our splendid Freshman play brought us approval. We watched Prom and Commencement with longing. Our Sophomore year proved us true Amazons, for we walked away with the cups for hockey, basketball, golf and tennis doubles. Aesthetically inclined, we introduced to the college its new magazine THE SCROLL, which is one of the important and lasting contributions to college activities of our four year visit. We were not only hostesses to the Juniors and Seniors, but also to out- siders on such occasions as Founders' Day and May Day. Our'finding of the Treasure Chest, our Sophomore play, and Sport Dance attracted attention. Commencement week arrived and we bid adieu to our Sister Class, the Seniors. Junior year was social year. As Big Sisters to the Freshmen and ushers at college functions our presence was felt. The Hallowe'en Party brought forth many novelties. We participated in entertaining and being entertained as befits an upper class. Junior dancing classes made us proficient performers in the art of dancing as a medium of expression. The Junior' play was well received. In spring athletics the cups for the swimming meet and tennis doubles became ours. But everything sank into insignificance in comparison with Junior Prom. The sale of Junior Sandwiches and tickets for Junior Revue made it possible for us to achieve the distinction of uweatheringv the expenses of Prom with a PROFIT Our next appearance was to show us as Seniors. This last year of our college sojourn sees us as the second largest graduat- ing class of Lake Erie College. Cap and gown have served to designate us as Seniors in chapel and when ushering at Vespers. Our Founders' Day dance, Cake Hunt, Ghost walk after exams, winning of the basketball championship, Senior play, Prom, Senior Tables, Senior Week, Step Singing, and Senior House Party will always be pleasant memories for us. We thoroughly enjoyed the teas given in our honor. Our music majors delighted the college with many and varied recitals. The Hatchway, the college recreation room, has proved a veritable haven for us many times. Commencement week was all too fleeting, and we were thrilled to have VVillia1n Lyon Phelps for our speaker. THE TIBER represents our second effort in publishing. VVe hope to return for our first reunion as alumnae on the seventy-fifth anniversary of the college in 1934. fifteen MASHEK, HI'lI,l'lN MARY f'lI Ul'llllII1. The new publication was christened The Scroll. Three issues were proclucecl the first year of its existence. In the last two years one issue has f Y appeared each spring. lhis magazine makes an effort to publish different kinds of literary material so that its contents may have a general appeal. Lake Erie girls are decidedly athletic-minded and are ever eager to see their names added to the Athletic Honor Roll on the gymnasium walls. There is never a time throughout tho school year when some sport is not in full swing. Autumn davs brin r the class hockev teams into vi orous com- a q q . n 5, - n 1 etitions which be m on Founder's Day m a 'tdo or diea' stru le. P . Hitchcock Field offers two full-sized t1'acts for this popular sport, and seldom an afternoon goes by when it is not used. The Class of '35 rose victorious last season after one of the most exciting contests in the history of the College. Hockey, as a major sport, receives the whole-hearted support of the faculty members of the Athletic Department, and it is through their interest that we are able to play the All-American Team and have ltlrs. Cran Berry and Miss Hilda Burr to lend their invaluable experience to the development of better teams. Not only on the field do these fine sports-women help the Lake Erie athletes, but also in round table discussions they teach them the essentials of good- sportsmanship. Close upon the heels of hockey comes basketball, and the College receives it with equal enthusiasm. The class competitions this last season were especially interesting in that the Senior team faced the Freshmen for the final decision. The Seniors took the pennant, but the Freshmen made a prominent place for themselves in the annals of the Freshman Basketball Teams. During the winter months the Junior class enjoys the oppor- tunity of studying dancing with Miss Frampton of the Cleveland Institute, whose fine instruction does much for every student in the way of co-ordination and poise. Each year the girls are given their choice of many types of dancing that as a recreation and a serious study, dancing may answer various needs. At all seasons the pool is open for swimming. The most im- portant of the swimming activities is the ltleet, which took place this year on the twenty-second of March and witnessed a brilliant Juinor class victory. Swimming is a sport about which there is little talk but much accomplishment. The large, well-lighted pool offers pleasant relax- ation and is therefore a favorite spot for real exercise. The Swimming Club was formed recently for girls who enjoy the pool but have no time for regular swimming classes. The membership is fifty Sport Write-Up large and the project is considered a great success. VVater polo has come to the fore this year also and class teams have been ducking one another with wild enthusiasm. And those who had enthusiasm to spare were taken to Cleveland where they could take it out on a Y. VV. C. A. team. Another year-round sport is bowling. The gymnasium is equipped with two excellent alleys, and the game of bowling attracts the faculty as well as the students. Although bowling has not as yet taken its place among the exhibition sports, there is no reason why it should not. As soon as the weather permits the entire college turns out of doors for its recreation. Front campus is the scene of archery classes. There girls learn the steady judgment required in a game that demands unusual skill. Every year experts in archery visit the College and with their great technique give pointers to students who already have complete grasp of the fundamentals. The Tour- nament will be played off on June twelfth. The Track Meet is an event that throws the campus into a blaze of glory. Last year many college records were smashed. This year we expect an exhibition of the same record-breaking calibre and all the College looks forward to May twentieth. The two popular off-campus sports are riding and golf. Riding classes spend their afternoons at a well-equipped academy some miles from the college. Moonlight and supper rides and arduous training for the Meet makes riding not only a grand good-time but a sport in which to excell. The Riding Meets are held on Field Day in the large riding paddock on the campus. Polo has recently become popular and it will not be long before Lake Erie will be turning out master polo teams. Golfers are just as mad over their game at Lake Erie as they are the world over. From the first robin on, stray golfers may be seen digging up the turf in fine style all around the campus. The Golf Club is available for those who intend to take their game seriously, as is the professional instruction of Mr. 0'Donnell. Last year the cup was carried away by a Freshman--this year-well, it would be useless to speculate. With a last flourish the sport seasons come to a brilliant close with the Tennis Tournament. Students who have been studying under Mary K. Browne get a chance to show their ability, and the fine clay courts see some real action. This year a new asphalt court is being installed. We are eager to use it, all of us, from the tennis champ down to the poorest dub. The Tournament is still ahead of us and we expect an exciting exhibition. fffftl-0116 Polo Polo is a fairly new sport at Lake Erie College, having been introduced three years ago. VVhenever a game is played at the College riding field or the Cleveland Armory you may be sure that excitement runs high among the students and spectators. Marv K, Browne Tennis always has been an important and favor- ite sport at Lake Erie College. The students are fortunate to be able to better their technique under the fine tutelage of Mary K. Browne, one time VVo1nan,s National Tennis Champion. Miss Browne works diligently with the girls the whole year round, enabling them not only to have a correct understand- ing of the game, but also to put theory into prac- tice. The Pool The splendid swimming pool in the Lake Erie College gymnasium is often the scene of aquatic con- tests and exhibitions. The college is more fortunate than many other educational institutions in possess- ing it. The students realize this and appreciate the opportunity and privilege the pool affords. fifty-Iwo 9 Athletics Honors 1932-1933 HOCKEY Class of 1935 Honorary Varsity: Jean Bell 34, Bessie Biddlecombe 34, Mary Jane Brown '35, Enid Immel '35, Margaret Kern '33, Alice Garwood '33, Margaret Read '35, Clara Wood '34, Helen Hutt '34, Eva Ann McCheskey '35, and Lois Hale '33. 7 9 BASKETBALL Class of 1933 Honorary Varsity: Alice Garwood '33, Virginia Dalrymple '36, Mar- garet Kern '33, Margaret Read '35, and Joan Zerbe '36, SWIMMING Class of 1934 Highest Individual Points: Helen Hutt '34 WATER PoLo Class of 1934 Honorary Varsity: Jeanne Truter '33, Lois Hale '33, Helen Hutt '34, Clara Wood '34, Alberta Hays '34, and Mary Belle Armstrong '36.
