From the waters of the China Sea, far away reaches of the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and back through the Pacific, you were there. You have blessed our LAKE ERIE family, returning us home and making us a worthy instrument of service for others. We thank you, and ask that you sail on with us to a future of prom- ise and purpose brighter than we could ever have imagined. SHIELD Dark blue and gold are the traditional Navy colors. Red, white, and blue are our National colors. The blue alludes to our world ' s oceans. The nine red and white sections combine to suggest the U.S. Fleet action of the Battle of Lake Erie. The Naval sword and musket, crossed to imply strength and cooperation, are combined with the American Eagle to depict defense of, and devotion to, country. CREST The carronades are emblematic of the American firepower that was so decisive in the Battle of Lake Erie. The olive branches symbolize peace, achieved and maintained through strength and military preparedness. The trident, red for courage and valor, is a traditional Naval symbol that typifies an AEGIS cruiser ' s capabilities on the earth ' s surface, below the surface of our oceans, and in the air. Lake Erie ' s power is projected through the mighty 5 54 ' s against both shore and surface contacts. Lake Erie ' s primary mis- sion for the 5 54 guns is Naval Gun Fire Support. Anti-missile and anti-aircraft threats are not a problem thanks to CIWS. This six- barrel gatlin gun has a fire rate of 4500 rounds per minute. Pretty cool gun, huh? What would a ship be without an ar- mory? Our armory contains all the small arms on board, along with the M60 and .50 caliber machine guns. Don ' t forget the 25mm chain gun... They provide over 80,000 pounds of thrust to propel the ship from point A to point B and 7,500 kilow atts of power invigorating her with the llfeblood of electricity. The equipment is valued at millions of dollars but not worth a dime without the people. There are three types of individuals within M Division. The first is the GSE. He is responsible for the electrical and electronic equipment in the plant. His versatility is impressive. A GSE can work on anything from a simple light switch to the complex circuitry of an LM2500 gas turbine engine. He has the unglamorous and arduous task of troubleshooting what cannot be seen. Electrons have a tendency not to cooperate but aboard Lake Erie, the GSE always prevails. The second individual is the GSM. Upon joining the Navy and with no prior experience, the GSM is placed in a highly technical field. He must know all aspects of the engineering plant. Complex systems can be efficiently repaired with just a simple and almost insignificant symptom. His vast knowledge of system relationships and its many intricacies allow him to operate a smooth and reliable engineering plant. The GSM owns the plant. The final individual is the Fireman. The Fireman is often overlooked and underrated. In all actuality, his job could not be more important. He conducts most of the maintenance on the equipment which is the first line of defense in plant reliability. His persistent space preservation allows for maximum safety in a highly volatile environment. As the equipment monitor, he is the first set of eyes in all plant operations. Unknown to many, the Fireman is the backbone of M Division. Lake Erie was able to deploy on her maiden voyage with the assistance of the 38 team players comprised of the three ratings just covered. Six months and over 45,000 miles later. Lake Erie crewmembers were safely returned home to waiting loved ones, compliments of M Division.
